Humble Won’t Cap Donations To 15%

Walks back proposed changes after PR disaster.

If there’s one thing we’ve learned over the last month, it’s that overwhelming public relations backlash and the resulting reputational damage can actually inspire positive change. Humble Bundle has been in the weeds this past couple weeks after announcing that the service’s trademark charity sliders would be removed in favor of a fixed split with customer purchases.

The problem? Well Humble Bundle primarily exists as a method of publishers using their games as an incentive to promote charities, and the proposed new split capped charity contributions to 15% of the total sale. The massive bulk of the share had been earmarked for the game’s publishers and the 15% option for charity donations was available but still relatively hidden behind a dropdown box.

In an apology posted today, Humble walked back the proposed changes and announced that the sliders would return today with an updated design in the coming weeks.

In the coming weeks, we’ll roll out the updated design which will include sliders that work exactly as they did previously. Once the new design is live, we will continue to iterate on it, incorporating feedback from the community into its ongoing evolution.

Reactions to the announcement so far are mixed, with some refusing to give credit for simply not implementing such an outwardly greedy and cynical business plan. It will have to be seen how Humble makes changes going forward.
