Respawn Entertainment Admits It Can’t Competently Handle Cheaters

Shuts off Linux access rather than work on a solution.

Linux users, also meaning those on Steam Deck using ProtonOS, are being cut off from access to Apex Legends. In a post on the official support forums, the developers at Respawn Entertainment admitted that the effort required to deal with cheaters on Linux is more than they are worth putting into the game.

Evidently not enough money from doubling the cost of battle passes came in to justify working on anti-cheat tools.

The openness of the Linux operating systems makes it an attractive one for cheaters and cheat developers. Linux cheats are indeed harder to detect and the data shows that they are growing at a rate that requires an outsized level of focus and attention from the team for a relatively small platform. There are also cases in which cheats for the Windows OS get emulated as if it’s on Linux in order to increase the difficulty of detection and prevention.

MMO Fallout will be around to cover the next time Respawn Entertainment decides to make the Apex Legends experience objectively worse for consumers.
