As PS3 and Vita stores shut down.
There’s some good news and some bad news for today coming out of PlayStation. On the good side, emulation of the PlayStation 3 is coming along great and emulation on the PlayStation 4 is growing roots. What does that have to do with today’s story? Nothing in particular, I just though it was germane to the conversation.
Now on to the bad news. Sony announced that the PlayStation 3 and Vita store will be shutting down in a rolling fashion starting August 2026 through July 2027. I know what you’re thinking; those stores were still open? And yes, they were. For now. The Vita store is pretty much a desert town already since many, many games were pulled years ago. It also hasn’t been possible to put a credit card on the PS3 or Vita for a good few years now, likely due to security concerns.
Meanwhile…Sony is also discontinuing something else of public interest. Discs entirely. Physical discs will be discontinued for all games releasing after January 2028 meaning games released after that date will only be available in digital format. Sony noted that the transition will allow them to get all the money once the second hand market is effectively destroyed, and the company is committed to diminishing consumer choice and value.
