Chronicles of Elyria Is Dead, Everyone Laid Off

Refusing to sell out to publishers.

The latest news post on Chronicles of Elyria might be confusing or perhaps boring to the average reader, it spends far too much time patting itself on the back before getting to the point: Development has been slower than expected, and investors have no faith in their ability to create a game independently and without any oversight. Unwilling to allow such oversight, Soulbound Studios decided instead to eschew said investors and now there is no money.

Chronicles of Elyria is officially broke, with development ceasing and all Soulbound Studio employees being laid off.

But to our great sadness…. with the failure of Settlers of Elyria, and five long months of only limited crowdfunding revenue coming in, Soulbound Studios has officially run out of money. Last night I was forced to do something I never thought I’d have to do. I closed the online store, put the SoE map back into read-only mode, and laid off all the employees…

Is Chronicles of Elyria dead forever? Yes. Well, technically no. Theoretically you can’t prove that at no point before human extinction will the game get picked back up for development.

I don’t know if or when Elyria will resurface, but when it does, you’ll all be the first to know. From myself, Souzou, Vye, Snipehunter, Serpentius, and all the rest of the Soulbound team, thank you for your love and support. We’ll see you around.

Chronicles of Elyria was crowdfunded to the tune of $1.6 million and has raised eyebrows over questionable monetization strategies including selling status in the game for thousands of dollars.
