DC Universe Remastered Is Coming

dc_scr_DLC8_Iconic_JohnConstantine_001

Sony Online Entertainment has posted the latest Producer Letter detailing the upcoming Update 31 and gearing up for launch on the PlayStation 4. What does Update 31 entail?

On a high level, that means a sweeping, game-wide graphical upgrade, a massive design effort to polish and remaster the core leveling game, and a host of technical work that prepares DCUO’s underlying technology not only for launch on a next generation gaming console, but for a long future on it as well. This is without a doubt the biggest technical update we have ever done.

Aside from a massive amount of under the hood fixes, tweaks, and optimizations, DC Universe will also undergo a graphical upgrade (not pictured above), a redesign of several major areas including Centennial Park and Robinson Park in Metropolis and Gotham respectively. The letter also notes that the 1-30 leveling process will be made much more fluid, alongside updates to textures and geometry to make the world feel more seamless, and updates to the way that NPCs act to make them more consistent in combat.

These updates will go live on all platforms, including PlayStation 3, and can be previewed on the test server this week. The update is expected to go live in November.

Today’s screenshot comes to us from Sony Online Entertainment, on DC Universe’s upcoming DLC release: Sons of Trigon. Releasing later this fall, Sons of Trigon marks the eighth DLC expansion to the super hero/villain MMO since release, as well as the 11th power: Celestial. Players will take on Trigon alongside either Wonder Woman or Circe, in a battle for either power or peace.

Sons of Trigon DLC picks up where the Sins of the Father storyline left off. Through blood ritual, Trigon escaped his dimension and was preparing to attack the Earth. However, he became trapped in a nightmare version of Gotham City, a wasteland filled with sin. In this new DLC, Heroes and Villains will explore these wastelands as they race to confront Trigon and his sinful sons.

DC Universe Can’t Wait To Ditch The PS3

dc_scr_DLC7_Quantum_TemporalVortex_02

The PlayStation 4 is coming out soon and no one could be happier than the DC Universe Online team at Sony Online Entertainment. Don’t get them wrong, the current generation of Sony’s console hardware is nice enough, but with what is effectively a 220mb system the team is dealing with rather tight constraints. The unfortunate situation is that most of the players on DC Universe are playing via the console, so they are stuck with the limitations for the time being. In an interview with Shacknews, Executive Producer Larry Liberty explained that they can see the PS3 version being retired once a large portion moves over to the new hardware.

“I do expect that eventually, PS4 to come out, and probably be more successful than PS3 was as a platform. It wouldn’t surprise me if we do get a pretty quick migration, but we’ll keep servicing PS3 for a while.”

It will happen at some point, the question is simply when.

DC Universe Online Coming To Asia

dc_scr_DLC7_Quantum_TemporalVortex_02

Good news, super people. Sony Online Entertainment has announced a partnership with AsiaSoft Corporation to bring DC Universe Online to eight Asian countries. Beginning later this year, gamers in Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia, Myanmar, Cambodia, and the Philippines will be able to suit up and jump in to enjoy their own dedicated servers, localized customer support, and payment gateways.

Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman and the entire roster of DC Entertainment heroes and villains are among the most recognizable icons in the world. By bringing  DC Universe Online to southeast Asia, more people than ever will be able to gear-up and fight alongside their favorite characters,” said Louis Figueroa, Senior Vice President, Business Development, Sony Online Entertainment.

The announcement only makes mention of the PC version of DC Universe Online, with no apparent plans for hosting on the PS3.

DC Universe and Planetside 2 Coming To PS4

planetside2image2

Sony Online Entertainment is working hard to ensure that the PlayStation 4 is that console of choice for next generation MMO gaming. With DC Universe Online already available on the PlayStation 3, it was only a matter of time before Sony announced the manner in which the game would come to the PS4. Well, your wait is over. Sony has confirmed that not only will DC Universe Online be making the move over to next gen consoles, but that Planetside 2 will be coming to the system as well.

There hasn’t been any mention in the videos as to how server structure will work, but given precedent it is likely that Sony will segregate PS4 DC Universe players or integrate them into the Playstation 3 servers, and that PS4 Planetside 2 users will be on their own segregated servers from PC gamers.

More on this as it appears, you can find the two reveal videos at the IGN link below.

Today’s MMOrning Shot comes from Sony Online Entertainment and showcases DC Universe Online’s upcoming DLC Origin Crisis. Players will be tasked with battling through time and alternate realities with Lex Luthor and Superman with the goal of preserving or altering the origins of certain heroes and villains. DC Universe Unveils 2013 PvP Roadmap

dc_scr_plyract_met_004_0610

DC Universe is set to release the next big DLC pack, Origin Crisis, which admittedly focuses mostly on PvE encounters. Until then, Sony Online Entertainment has some big plans in store for lots of steamy hero on villain content in the coming year. For a couple of weeks now, heroes and villains all around Gotham and Metropolis have been enjoying the brand new ranked matchmaking system, which runs in the background collecting match results and using that data to create more balanced teams. Expounding on ranked matchmaking, Sony plans on implementing arranged matchmaking, allowing groups to bypass the on duty system and set up matches against other groups directly. You’ll be able to skirmish against your friends, or recreate your own version of Crisis on Two Earths, all within the confines of structured PvP.

Also coming is the introduction of seasonal gear. Tiered PvP gear that is replaced with new gear once a season begins. The goal, according to the announcement, is to allow players to progress without increasing gaps between seasoned veterans and new fighters, as well as giving players a fresh start every so often. Finally, in order to reduce queue times, the team has announced map rotation. Essentially this means that the number of available maps will be reduced, however they will be cycled on a regular basis. With five maps available at any time, Sony hopes that this will allow them to add new PvP maps over time without the issue of spreading the base too thin.

Sony is welcoming feedback to any of the proposed changes. You can find links to their specific forum threads below.

[DC Universe] SOE Working On US PS3 Server Issues

dc_scr_plyract_met_004_0610

Larry Liberty, who is in fact not a super hero himself but the Executive Producer for DC Universe Online, has stepped up to the forums today to issue a notice for players of DC Universe, specifically those who play on the PS3 servers in the United States. Due to heavy load brought on by the launch of Home Turf, the US PS3 server has been experiencing some unplanned downtime and instability, as well as a few other unforeseen issues. Sony Online Entertainment is working diligently to fix the issues brought forward during yesterday’s mishap and may have to bring the server down again.

You can read the full letter below:

I just wanted to apologize for the unplanned downtime on the USPS3 server.  Server population has been exceptional since the launch of Home Turf, and it’s brought to light two issues that only happen under very high load.  We have addressed one of them already, and are investigating the other.  We will be bringing the server back up with an update that will address several issues that were surfaced yesterday.  Release notes will accompany the update with more information, but there are a bunch of fixes and polish work as well based on community feedback.  One change I wanted to call out was the reduction in the cooldown timer on Base relocation.  We’re changing it from the initial 7-day cooldown to 1-hour.  It may be necessary to come down for an additional server update today.  We’ll monitor load, and broadcast warnings in-game.
