THQ Has No Answers: Future of the Developer In Question

If you’re going to say goodbye to THQ before it dies, not might be the time to sign your farewell cards. THQ held its quarterly earnings call with investors and the news is not good. Earnings guidance has been suspended, games have been delayed, and the developer refused to take questions from investors, citing efforts to evaluate “strategic and financing alternatives intended to improve THQ’s overall liquidity.” For THQ, once a massive publisher and contender in the industry, the tidal wave of bad news has overshadowed the tiny light in the dark, that THQ had beat initial forecasts. Company of Heroes 2 and Metro: Last Light have been delayed by a couple of months, and it appears that they are putting a lot of stock in South Park: The Stick of Truth.

South Park: The Stick of Truth has been delayed until the first fiscal quarter of 2014, from the original March 2013 release. THQ’s Warhammer 40k MMO was cancelled earlier this year and downgraded to a standard multiplayer title.

Lord of the Rings Online Free! [Not For Europe]

NSFE: Not Suited For Europeans

Just a friendly reminder to those of you who haven’t been enjoying the head start: Lord of the Rings Online goes free to play today! Well, freemium is a more accurate description. Either way, if you haven’t already been downloading the client, you may want to start it this morning, as the seven gigabyte (ten gigs for the full high-definition client) download is going to take a while, and Turbine’s download servers will no doubt be hit by the sudden rush of players.

Turbine is fixing a bug where players are being shown too many/few Turbine points compared to what they should have. The points may take a couple days to register, for those who obtained them either through Turbine’s subscription promotion, subscription “allowances,” and lifetime subscription allowances.

Reminder: Loyalty rewards may take 7-10 days to appear in your account after the launch of Volume III, Book 2. VIP Points should appear within 2-3 days after your billing date.(Click Here) for more information on account status, points, or other Free to Play related questions.

Still no word on Lord of the Rings Europe. To those player in the US, expect major queue lines (unless you’re a VIP) for the next few weeks.

Fallen Earth: Delayed Again

FallenEarth

It seems like Fallen Earth LLC just can’t catch a break when it comes to server stability. What was originally supposed to be a September 9th release was pushed back last month to September 15th. Now, we have news that the title has been delayed again, to September 22nd, to deal with varying launch difficulties.

“Our main focus is to make sure that Fallen Earth is easily accessible to as many fans as possible,” said Jessica Orr, product manager for Fallen Earth. “We are working on initiatives that are near fruition and we simply need more time.”

Luckily for those of you who preordered, this means you will receive an extra six days on to your head start; The newest delay has not affected the head start.

Some Thoughts: After two delays, Fallen Earth LLC can expect an uproar if this launch goes badly (IE: Server crashes, obvious bugs, etc). It’s good to see a company that is willing to push back a product, and potentially lose customers, to ensure that their product will be ready on time, but some will see the developers as possibly pushing development too close to the line, making optimizations and fixing issues that should have been fixed long before the game went gold.

Interested in seeing how Fallen Earth will perform when it launches this September 22nd.

Fallen Earth Delayed

Fallen Earth has been delayed six days to a September 15th launch, in order to iron out more bugs and optimizations, as well as graphics improvements.

“We’ve seen a lot of new beta testers online recently and we’ve gotten insight into things that need to be tweaked,” said Colin Dwan, project manager for Fallen Earth. “Our primary concern is making sure game play experience is as smooth as possible on launch day.”

Those who have preordered will still gain early access on September 9th.
