[NM] Demo Impressions: Prey

The date, March 15 2032. The place, my apartment. I am Morgan, waking up to start my first day at a new job at the TranStar Testing Facility. After fiddling around with a few things in the apartment, I grab my suit and head to the roof where a helicopter awaits. As the pilot takes off, the game transitions into a vehicle for smooth synth music. Just for giggles, I decide to see if I can jump into the helicopter’s blades. I can, they kill me instantly.

You start off Prey as Morgan Yu, gender-neutrally named protagonist going through a series of confusing and likely annoying personality questions at the TranStar Testing Facility. As you might expect being that this is a science fiction game, you’re walled off from the other characters initially, something goes wrong and all hell breaks loose in the facility. You’ll see this “twist” coming the moment you step into the first room, so I don’t feel like I’m spoiling anything of importance. To go further with the story after this point would be a major spoiler, so play the demo at your own risk.

First impressions with Prey make me feel like I’m playing a game developed by the Deus Ex folks at Eidos Montreal for the Mirror’s Edge universe with some System Shock thrown in for good measure. Rather than throw you into a sandbox and have you play with the encounters placed around the map, Prey follows the vein of Deus Ex, throwing around enough toys to play to most preferences. Want to be an awesome hacker? There are turrets, locked doors, etc aplenty. Want to go in guns blazing? You have that option. Sneak around using stealth? Absolutely. You very quickly come upon items like the wrench, GLOO gun (freezes enemies in place) and oddities like a foam crossbow that fires bolts that don’t do damage but are probably helpful for distractions.

Mimics are the primary antagonist of the game so far. The more populous group you’ll come across are capable of scurrying off and changing into objects in the scenery. Larger enemies roam around the map, and at this early stage it is clearly best to leave them alone. Your GLOO Gun doesn’t do a whole lot to help and they are capable of taking your out from afar.

Skill upgrades are handled by neuro mods both in plain sight and hidden around the map, giving the game more of an emphasis on exploration and less so on killing everything in sight to maximize your experience gain. Neuro mods can be used to customize Morgan to your play style, emphasizing stealth, weapon proficiency, or healing, among other things. Players of Deus Ex will be familiar with using the system for minor upgrades like lifting heavy objects or allowing Morgan to extract more resources from downed foes. Weapons are similarly upgraded through weapon upgrade mods (go figure) that are found separate from the neuro mods and again encourages deep exploration.

Prey is best played at a slow, methodical pace. Explore the map too fast and you’ll likely miss the crafting materials and notes scattered around, sticky notes with pass codes and important information. I also enjoy that mimics will show up in rooms that you’ve already cleared, rather than guiding the player through an all-too-predictable shuffle of entering a room, triggering the traps, and then having it be safe forever.

I walked out of the Prey demo with a few issues, most pressing being that controlling Morgan feels like pushing a wheelchair up a hill made of pudding. Slow and sluggish, both in movement and in turning, with some serious input delays on the Playstation 4. It’s like someone put Morgan into one of those padded training suits that you see the police use with training dogs, and you’re expected to keep up with said dogs who are now on rocket powered skates. None of these problems appear to be present on the Xbox One version, so if you have both systems, you’re probably better off on Xbox. There is no knowing how the PC version will run, Bethesda hasn’t released a demo.

Eve Online Introducing Unlimited Trials

Eve Online is going free to play!

Well, not really. While other websites are heralding today’s news as the coming of free to play for the 13 year old MMO, the term doesn’t entirely fit the package. What Eve Online is receiving is more akin to the unlimited trials that we saw in subscription games like World of Warcraft and Warhammer, allowing players to play endlessly but only obtain a certain level that restricts them from progressing past a certain point.

For Eve Online, this means being restricted to tech one ships, only allowed to use skills native to your faction, and having your skills locked out if you drop your subscription.

The most important thing to know about Alpha clones is that they may only use a specific set of skills and skill levels. To begin with, we are planning that the Alpha skill set will be focused on using tech one Frigates, Destroyers and Cruisers. Alpha clones will only be able to use ship and weapon skills native to their faction. If you have skills trained on a character in Alpha State, which are not part of the Alpha skill set, those skills will be locked and unusable until Omega state is reactivated. Characters will start the game with the same 400,000 skill points as they do now and will be able to train freely within the Alpha list. Our Thoughts: TERA Gaikai


TERA is 50 gigabytes. That is as many as five tens and that is terrible. For some, fifty gigabytes may be too much of an investment in terms of bandwidth or time to give TERA’s seven day trial a go. Luckily this is where Gaikai comes in. Founded in 2008, Gaikai is an online cloud-based streaming service being employed by a growing selection of MMORPGs. The trials through Gaikai are currently very limited, both in time in and content. The benefit to this, however, is that the game can literally be booted up in seconds, playable directly through your browser.

You can’t beat Gaikai in terms of accessibility. You can play without ever having to sign up for an account, entering your email address or personal information, or linking your Facebook/Twitter/Bebo accounts. At the offset, you have three classes to choose from: Warrior, sorcerer, and lancer. The preview encompasses the introduction, starting the player off at level 20 with the associated class skills already unlocked.

As you can see, the graphics have been scaled back somewhat to function properly through the browser. Following a lengthy bit of running around talking to various NPCs, receiving equipment, and a lot of walking, the player is introduced to the combat mechanics and the demo ends with the player fighting one of the game’s big-ass monsters.

The demo is only disappointing in the sense that at least half of the demo is wasted on the most boring section: Tutorial. Once you get to the part where there is actual combat, the demo feels almost over and all you’ve accomplished is reading through quest text. For someone who has never played TERA, this is probably not the best presentation to make them transition on to the full seven day trial. All other systems except for combat are not mentioned at all.

I’m sure TERA will eventually support a better demo on Gaikai, but this feature feels rushed and ultimately is unsatisfying and poorly marketed as a result. Even with the scaling back of graphics, the game still looks great and handles just as well as it does in the full game, but overall it just feels half-baked.

En Masse Entertainment should create a Gaikai specific demo instead of simply plucking the first area and show off more of the game, including crafting, the political system, and broker.

Runescape Entry Barrier Too High: Instant Demo

A monetary barrier to a game can often be the deciding factor for a prospective player. Because of the daunting realization that a company will have to sell not only the client (unless you are Warhammer Online) but a subscription on top of that, it becomes almost mandatory in the MMO genre to have some form of trial, with some titles (Warhammer Online) going as far as releasing entire sections of the game for free, forever, so players don’t feel boxed in by a “15 day” trial.

Free to play and freemium games have it easy, because their business model already works on offering something for free with certain incentives for paying. A cash shop game brings in players with the idea that they can play the game for free, forever, but get some perks by buying items from the cash shop. If the player becomes addicted, the mantra of “I will never pay for anything” becomes “well, I’ll pay for a couple items” and so on. Freemium titles hope to get the player hooked on the free content, and then over time coax them into paying for the membership. Even in the free play realm, however, do you find barriers of entry. Runescape, for example, has a lower barrier of entry than Cabal, because of the lack of a client to download.

Jagex must have decided that even this barrier was too high, and players were being turned away from the free game for the sole reason that they did not want to create an account, and thus the Instant Demo was born. Logging into Runescape, I came upon this:

Even more strange was the quote from Mod Nexus on the official forums:

According to the login screen, the “Instant Demo” mode contains 9 quests, 10 hours of gameplay, and requires no registration. Owing to Runescape’s registration being rather quick (two minutes, tops), it raises the question: Is creating an account really that high of a barrier? If so, Alganon should drop its client price, because it isn’t the cost of the client that raises a barrier, apparently the simple act of requiring people to register accounts does just as fine of a job.

Play Alganon Now My Lord, Not Free Forever


Because apparently I've been using the gold icon too much.

Recently, several titles have thrown in the proverbial towel and have installed endless trial periods: Champions Online opened up the tutorial area (and first 15 levels) for free, forever. Warhammer Online opened up the Tier 1 (up to level 10) for free forever. Age of Conan is running a special to play the original game, sans trade and chat, for free forever. So, needless to say, more titles are jumping on the “unique trial system” method.

Alganon, noted World of Warcraft clone that launched December 1st, has a special offer for players. You can play the game, for free, for 30 days. Level up as much as possible. There are restrictions on chat and trade, as well as skill level caps (3) among other restrictions, and your character is deleted after 30 days unless you buy the game. A full free month? Usually you have to buy the game first to get that kind of deal!

Alganon is worth looking at if you are on the edge of buying the title, or if you just want something free to play for 30 days. Either way, check it out. Just remember it’s barely a month out the door: Don’t expect a 100% finished product.
