Jagex Continues Hiring Spree In 2020, Brings On Big Names

2020 is continuing the trend of gaming industry names being absorbed into the Jagex collective. Will MMO Fallout be absorbed next? Only time will tell.

Jagex’s latest hiring spree has brought on board a number of notable names to notch their…I’m out of words for this alliteration. The role of head of product marketing for RuneScape has been filled by David Bamberger who was part of the product launches for Final Fantasy VII, Twisted Metal, Batman: Arkham Asylum, and more. David is joined by Ouni Kwon as head of marketing for Old School RuneScape coming off of his nine year stint at Wargaming working on World of Tanks.

Creative services director is now Joeyray Hall who had spent more than two decades at Blizzard Entertainment working as 3D artist and taking on senior management roles including cinematics senior project manager. Mike Donatelli is joining on as product director of Old School RuneScape, having worked on the late Mythic Entertainment’s MMO library of Dark Age of Camelot, Warhammer Online, and Wildstar.

Stewart Stanbury has joined as director of business development and brings his experience of working with clients including Adobe, Ubisoft, Rockstar, and more to provide insight, research, marketing, and player retention support. Stewart will be Jagex’s outreach to external studios for investment, retail and licensing opportunities for Jagex’s corporate portfolio. Official Planet Funorb merch? We can only dream.

And last but not least we have Anna Mostyn-Williams as director of publishing partners. After a career of helming brands from Xbox, Quantic Dreams, and Discovery Communications, Anna will be working on Jagex’s outreach and relationship with distribution and marketing partners.

Jagex CEO Phil Mansell weighed in:

“With the significant talent we’re able to continuously attract to Jagex, it’s very clear that big things lie ahead for the studio as we approach our 20th Anniversary of RuneScape. We recognise the importance of investing in exceptional talent, with 100 new hires welcomed to Jagex in 2019 alone, we have witnessed a record-breaking year whilst hitting exciting milestones, and we plan to continue to build our talent pool through 2020 and beyond.”

Old School RuneScape Launches New Continent

scapesold

With RuneScape celebrating its fifteenth birthday this year, Old School players have a lot to look forward to in terms of new content. With today’s update, players will be able to explore the first region of Zeah, a whole new continent set to launch over the course of 2016. The first area available is the city of Great Kourend, with five families fighting for control. Players can help any of the five families in return for access to new weapons, armor, and other resources and skill training areas.

“Our dedicated development team has been beavering away on Zeah for quite some time, so it’s fantastic that we can finally unlock the doors to Great Kourend,” said Mathew Kemp, product manager, Old School RuneScape. “The launch of an entire landmass exclusive to Old School RuneScape over the course of 2016, and the new content it will bring to our excellent community, is really exciting. Zeah also underlines the success Old School has experienced since its launch in 2013.”

The rest of Zeah is set to release over the course of the year. You can read more about today’s update at the link below.

Old School RuneScape Polls Integrity Issues

noedits

How do you tackle issues of player integrity in a game where everything is voted on? You poll it, of course! The latest poll to hit Old School RuneScape deals with the issue of player activity and whether or not Jagex should deal with some less scrupulous, even if not exactly evil, behavior.

Players are asked to vote on dealing with AFK-training, players trading wealth between games, trust staking, and untradeable items being retrieved for free when lost to PvP. Options available are to do nothing, to implement a fix based on further polling, or to fix without a poll. Currently the majority opinion (based on 21,000 votes) is that none of the issues need to be dealt with at all.

As for the previous poll, the new continent was approved with a whopping 90% yes. 86% of players approved ten new achievement diaries, with 80% voting for elite diaries. The rest of the polls did not pass the 75% threshold, including repeatable tasks, another attempt to lower the voting threshold from 75% to 70%, an abstain option from voting, the option to change your vote, and changing the minimum requirements to vote (but just barely).

Old School RuneScape Gets New School Skill

noedits

Old School RuneScape isn’t simply about allowing disgruntled players to relive the golden days of the past, since its introduction earlier this year the offshoot has gone in a rather separate direction from its New School counterpart. Thanks to a content system where updates are suggested and then voted on by the community, with nothing making its way in unless the majority say yes, Old School RuneScape has seen a few content updates from past its time, like optional hud improvements and even the god wars dungeon and godswords. The players even managed to vote in content that never existed back in the day, like new items and interfaces and even a new skill.

Designed by a member of the community and voted on by players, the Artisan skill is a bit like a craftsman’s take on slayer, where a slayer master gives assignments to kill certain creatures. In Artisan, an artisan master gives assignments to craft specific items in return for experience, the benefit being that you level in any related skills simultaneously. Players will be able to craft creature idols which, when burned, offer combat boosts. Players will also be able to learn how to craft special items that boost other skills, like cooking better quality food or new clothing.
