Phantasy Start Online 2 Is Sunsetting In Southeast Asia

We have to assume that there is someone still left that is waiting for Phantasy Star Online 2 to come westward, that hasn’t already set up an account and started playing with an English patch on the Japanese servers, but that person may find their hopes dashed. Phantasy Star Online 2, now a five year old title, has seen its first sunset announcement. Revealed on the official website, the Southeast Asia servers will be coming down on May 26.

The announcement is below:

The Phantasy Star Online 2 team would like to express our thanks for the steadfast support of the whole ARKS Fleet. In the past two years, together, we formed a PSO2 community built on friendships that can withstand the test of time. That is why it saddens us greatly our contract in servicing SEA countries for Phantasy Star Online 2 will not be continued. As our friends and partners, we would like you to have only the finest experience with us.

Keeping your best interest in mind, the Phantasy Star Online 2 team and SEGA would like to announce that Phantasy Star Online 2 will end its service on 26 May 2017 11:00 PM (GMT+8).

As compensation, all accounts will be given 60 days of premium time and free AC/gold scratch every week until the servers shut down. Also worth noting is that players will no longer be able to submit customer support tickets after the server shutdown, so get your bug reports in now.

PSO2 Delayed, Not Cancelled

pso2_title

Is Phantasy Star Online 2 coming to the west? Some say yes, some say no, and I’m just referring to Sega on different days of the week. We learned from sources last October that Sega didn’t think that the game would be profitable enough to launch in North America and Europe. As it stands, however, Sega recently replied to a tweet for information with a note that they are still working on bringing the game westward.

PSO2 is still delayed. SEGA is currently working on bringing PSO2 to the West and will update as soon as we know more.

More news as it appears.

Is Relic Localizing Phantasy Star Online 2?

phantasy_star_universe_ambition_of_the_illuminus_profilelarge

Earlier this year, gamers were dismayed to hear that Phantasy Star Online 2 would likely not be making it to the west, despite the game being fully translated into English for certain Asian regions. The news wasn’t a definite no, but allegedly Sega doubts the game’s ability to gain traction in Europe and the Americas. Luckily, that may not be the case. At the beginning of the year, Relic Entertainment was sold to Sega as part of THQ’s bankruptcy. A job listing has popped up on Relic’s website for a programmer/engineer to work on a live MMO from Japan.

Among the list of duties and requirements are:

  • Ramp up and perform due diligence on an existing live MMO project in development in Japan, embedded with the live team
  • 5+ years’ engineering experience from PC client/server based MMO development

It could be Phantasy Star Online 2, or it could be some other property.

Phantasy Star Online 2 Isn’t Coming Westward

pso2_title

The good news is that Phantasy Star Online 2 is fully localized in English and ready to go for a launch in the west. The bad news? It will likely never launch here. According to an undisclosed source in an article by Tristan Oliver over at TSSZ, Phantasy Star Online 2’s localization will only be rolling out to English speaking Asian countries. Sega hasn’t officially shot down any prospects of the title coming to the Americas and Europe, however the source speculates that there may be enough doubt that the game would be profitable in the west to prevent the game from ever making its way overseas.

Sega has been silent about a western launch since their appearance at the Penny Arcade Expo last year. Some gamers are already playing PSO2 on the Japanese servers with English patches, and you can too with this handy guide from Kotaku.

Phantasy Star Online 2 Delayed In North America

original (2)

Saying that Phantasy Star Online 2 has been delayed is a bit of a stretch, particularly considering that Sonic Team has never actually specified a release date. Regardless, PSO2 will not be making the early 2013 launch that Sega asked for for Christmas.

“Originally slated for an early 2013 launch, Sega can officially confirm that PS02 has been delayed,” a Sega spokesperson told Polygon. “We don’t have any specifics but will update everyone as soon as there are more details to share.”

Phantasy Star Online is set to hit Windows machines in North America and Europe at some point in 2013, with versions for the Android, iOS, and Playstation Vita coming sometime after. By contrast, the game has already launched in Japan as of last July on Windows and has already launched its Vita version just last February. Not that many PSO fans would have noticed, having already downloaded the Japanese client and applied one of the many English translation patches created by the community.

Phantasy Star Online 2 Hacked, NPCs Moved

Phantasy Star Online 2 was released recently in Japan, and comes to the west in early 2013, and the hackers have already started taking control. This week players managed to hack into the MMO and played a prank by moving NPCs around and out of reach of gamers. Sega claims that they are investigating the hack and that no data was leaked in the process.

Phantasy Star Online has always had problems with security holes, from the original which could be hacked with Gameshark, to rampant item duping and other hacks. Unlike real MMOs, Phantasy Star Online runs many operations client-side, offering a major opportunity for players to make alterations with the way their client connects with the server. The NPC glitch above has reportedly been in the game since the beta first launched.
