City of Titans Breaks $675,000 As Clock Hits Midnight

Missing Worlds Media never stood a chance of failure, not if its devoted community has anything to say about it. As the sun sets on the City of Titans Kickstarter campaign, the team comes out with a grand total of over six hundred seventy five thousand dollars. That level of pledge ensures the release of the City of Titans character creator app on iOS and Android, a Mac version of the game available at launch, auras and travel powers, wings, more powers, and more costume sets.

The success of this venture into crowd funded and community-built gaming is truly impressive, and we wish the best of luck to our friends at Missing Worlds Media. Now comes the hard part.

City of Titans Interview At Worlds Factory

slider-big-1

City of Titans, formerly The Phoenix Project, has blown through its Kickstarter goal and currently sits well over four hundred thousand with twenty days left to go in the campaign. Our friends over at Worlds Factory managed to get a word in with Chris “Warcabbit” Hare from Missing Worlds Media to give a few more details about City of Titans.

The core of our game will be a “Themepark” ride, and it will be relatively easy for a new player to follow that all the way to the end. But as they learn to play, and as they explore, more and more gameplay will open up to them, all the way to writing their own stories, making their own enemies to fight, designing their own maps, and running other people through them.”

City of Titans Kickstarter Hits 50% At Day One

slider-big-1

It is nearly 1:30am EST at the time of this writing. After just a day on Kickstarter, Missing Worlds Media’s funding drive for City of Titans has raked in over $150,000 with the money just pouring in. With success seemingly in the bag, Missing Worlds Media has 31 of its 32 days left to make up the remaining 50% of the goal. The team posted an update on the Kickstarter page noting their surprise at the reaction. So far 1,134 backers have pledged to the campaign.

We’ve been working on that teaser video pretty hard. But we’ve been working on all the individual parts in parallel. We’ve got some scenes we didn’t use, and I think you’ll like them. We’ll have another video or two for you, and maybe more and newer things to show you, in a week or two.

You can check out the City of Titans Kickstarter at the link below or follow the campaign on our sidebar all month.

The Phoenix Project Teases Us

slider-big-1

Missing Worlds Media loves to tease us. If you don’t know, The Phoenix Project is one of several spiritual upcoming super hero MMOs inspired by the shuttering of City of Heroes. This month (September), the team at MWM will be launching a Kickstarter to provide their MMO with some real funding. Until then, enjoy a teaser trailer released this past January.

MMOrning Shots: The Phoenix Project

City_Block_Nate

We’re not just building a game; we’re building a world, which we hope will be able to stand on its own merits in an environment fraught with intense competition. It will only be able to do so with the support of its surrounding community.

I love reading up on the two City of Heroes spiritual community sequels, The Phoenix Project (pictured above) and Heroes and Villains. The above is The Phoenix Project being tested on the Unreal Engine with stock assets. You can check out the current status of The Phoenix Project by heading over to the Missing Worlds Media website.

So today’s MMOrning Shot isn’t from an MMO, at least not yet. What you are looking at is from the upcoming community-sourced MMO: The Phoenix Project. Set in motion by a group of die-hard City of Heroes fans, Phoenix Project looks to rebuild the super hero MMO that thousands enjoyed, even if it isn’t exactly the same product. Phoenix Project is being developed on the CryEngine3 Unreal 3 Engine. If you want to check out the project, hit up this link to Missing Worlds Media.

What Is The Phoenix Project? And Heroes & Villains?

Normally this is where I’d post a picture of Bender with the caption “Fine, I’ll just make my own City of Heroes. With Blackjack, and hookers.” As it turns out, someone’s already beaten me to the punch, minus the blackjack and hookers of course. I know what you’re thinking: “Omali, are you seriously going to tell me that the City of Heroes community is joining together to build a community-driven MMO with an unprecedented level of communication between players and developers?” Absolutely, in fact your assessment is so accurate that I can only assume you already knew about it.

No, not content with the demise of their favorite MMO, certain members of the community have begun work on not just one, but two spiritual sequels to Paragon Studios’ work. The current project names are Heroes & Villains and the Phoenix Project.

Heroes & Villains, as described on the Titan Network:

We’re aiming to create a genuinely community-focused and driven game, with an unprecedented level of communication between its developers and players. Plan Z is just a collection of very passionate and very talented fans of comic books and games, so the line between developers and players is going to be very blurred, especially with the amount of consultation and feedback we’re going to be engaging in with other comic and gaming fans during the design process.

Heroes & Villains appears to be running off of the appropriately named Hero Engine, and work is already well under way. Heroes & Villains is to be set in Titan City, and by the looks of the current lore pages, will be filled with (soon to be) original heroes and villains.

Secondly, we have The Phoenix Project which is pretty similar in scope and focus.

Keep in mind that this is a spiritual successor. As such, we are not trying to completely replicate COH. This is creating a new game with the best parts of COH, and taking lessons from other games on how to improve the COH experience. This will not be identical to COH. That’s not possible without infringing, and I’d prefer to avoid any possible threats of lawsuit down the road. Right now, this is ALL conceptual building processes. But if worst comes to worst, we have to be able to produce a game concept that will sell to investors on December 1st. That is the immediate goal. Long-term goals need to be kept in mind too, and we need to remain flexible.

It is hard to deny the ambitious nature of these projects, but who knows? We may one day be playing a proper community-developed MMO.
