Lessons From 2013 #8: Giving Purpose To Planetside

planetside2image2

As fun as it was, Planetside 2 launched without a whole lot of direction. The lack of a lattice system similar to the original Planetside meant that planetary combat was chaotic, with many players simply base jumping by seeking out areas most likely to be empty and therefore captured without resistance. With update 9, Sony Online Entertainment introduced a lattice system, requiring the forward bases be captured in order for more territory to be captured.

The lesson here is that if you’re going to make a sequel, pay attention to what made the original work and have it in at launch rather than months later.

Extra lesson: I need a new Planetside 2 stock photo. This one predates launch.

The Planetside 2 infographic is corny and probably inaccurate. I wouldn’t know, I’m too busy going through my formal attire.

Planetside 2: Cross Platform And Character Transfers

planetside2image2

PC and PlayStation 4 will not be taking each other head on in Planetside 2, however if you own both platforms you may be able to transfer your character between them. In an interview with Eurogamer, Matt Higby explained that due to the extra steps required in getting a patch approved and launched in the PlayStation Network, it is impossible to keep the two versions of Planetside 2 in sync.

“They might be a week behind in terms of patching, or a day behind or whatever it ends up being, and we can’t really have that.”

While cross-platform play seems impossible at least for the time being, Higby notes that the technology for transferring characters between platforms is entirely possible.

“But we’re also talking about having character portability, so a PC character, you could transfer it to PlayStation 4, and then back. The character format’s the same on both, it’s just purely a matter of the server updates.”

Check out the entire article below, where Higby goes on to talk about optimization, the PS4, and further updates to the game.

Planetside 2 Cancels Pay to Win Implants

planetside2image2

If criticism had a physical manifestation, John Smedley would be coming home with a broken nose and a black eye after today’s ordeal. Planetside 2 was gearing up for Game Update 13, which was set to implement a form of the implant system that original Planetside players should be familiar with. Implants are consumable items that last just a few hours and are single-use. They are powerful in nature and allow for protection against grenades, increases range, regenerate health, reduce damage, and makes the wearer undetectable. Sounds great, right up until the point where SOE took a hard left in their truck, slammed through the guard rail, and landed in an orphanage.

The problem? The implants, at least from what players knew, seemed somewhere between overpowered and unbalanced. Factor in that they would be purchased with certs/station cash and not infantry resources gained through playing the game, and you have a nice setup to turn Planetside 2 into a game where only those willing to pony up some cash have a snowball’s chance in hell of living long enough to accomplish anything. The community responded to the announced update with a resounding “absolutely not,” and John Smedley later announced via Twitter that implants would be removed from GU13 and sent back to the drawing board.

We look forward to seeing how Sony will reintegrate implants, assuming the update doesn’t die in the workshop.

DC Universe and Planetside 2 Coming To PS4

planetside2image2

Sony Online Entertainment is working hard to ensure that the PlayStation 4 is that console of choice for next generation MMO gaming. With DC Universe Online already available on the PlayStation 3, it was only a matter of time before Sony announced the manner in which the game would come to the PS4. Well, your wait is over. Sony has confirmed that not only will DC Universe Online be making the move over to next gen consoles, but that Planetside 2 will be coming to the system as well.

There hasn’t been any mention in the videos as to how server structure will work, but given precedent it is likely that Sony will segregate PS4 DC Universe players or integrate them into the Playstation 3 servers, and that PS4 Planetside 2 users will be on their own segregated servers from PC gamers.

More on this as it appears, you can find the two reveal videos at the IGN link below.

Planetside 2 Update Bringing Lattice System

hv7nMe0

Ask any Planetside player who made the transition to Planetside 2 what their biggest gripe is, and in all likelihood you will hear about the lack of a lattice system. In Planetside, bases and outposts are connected to each other through nodes, where those further into enemy territory cannot be captured until those at the forward lines are. When Planetside 2 launched without this system in place, players criticized the game for having a lack of objectives or direction, with fights breaking out randomly and players taking advantage of the large map to take over undefended bases.

Those gamers will be happy to hear that the upcoming Update 9, coming this week, will bring with it the much-anticipated lattice system. Players will now be funneled down a corridor system of outposts, with smaller outposts having two to three other bases connected to them and larger bases generally having three to five. The idea is to consolidate fighting to certain areas of the map, making for larger battles and giving defenders a better idea of where to go next. With the new corridor system, it will also be possible to cut off supplies to enemy factions with more tactical precision.

The update is being implemented in a test phase, with player feedback used to implement further changes to base connections, map layout, etc. You can read the full list of details at the link below.

John Smedley Deploys Lawyer-Grade Weaponry To Fight Planetside Cheaters

planetside2image2

Sony Online Entertainment has been taking the fight to cheaters in Planetside 2, and the battle has not been an easy one. Whenever the development team comes up with a new way to combat aimbots and other cheats, the people making said cheats simply find a new way to work around the system. So in a post on the Planetside subreddit, John Smedley appeared to clarify a few misconceptions about the policy against cheat users. In addition to the usual discussions of zero tolerance and constant development, Smedley also pointed to Sony’s newest battle tactic: Lawyers.

After having personally viewed some of the major cheat sites I can tell you I’m blown away by how sophisticated some of these operations are. They are making money on this. We’re working on that from another angle too that I’m not going to go into just yet (hint. it involves lawyers) . But we have the resources to fight this fight and we will keep doing it.

Fighting cheat makers in court will be a lengthy and expensive process, but more power to Sony if they are willing to go through with it.

Planetside 2 Roadmap Outlines Six Months

planetside2image2

I know what you’re thinking. Given the MMO industry is addicted to launch delays like they are crack, what could possibly be interesting about yet another roadmap being released? Well, Planetside 2’s roadmap (assuming you can convince it to load) is a bit different than those you’ve seen in the past. Released just recently by Sony Online Entertainment, the roadmap reveals the next six months of Planetside 2’s development schedule. The list includes a new continent, adjustments to various skills, new weapons and features to be implemented, and more.

But you’ll also see that the roadmap isn’t just a list of things that are on their way. Rather, they are a list of suggestions by Sony Online Entertainment being proposed to the community. Players are able to vote various features up and down, and while that doesn’t guarantee that they will be included or excluded, it is a way to gauge interest in a feature before the development team goes through all the hard work of actually implementing it. Players are also able to leave comments and suggestions for the developers to read.

Planetside 2 isn’t perfect, but Sony Online Entertainment is dedicated to fixing it up as well as they can.
