RuneScape Members Can Pick Up Free Bank Boosters

If you’ve had a hard time dealing with a lack of bank space, your prayers have been answered. As part of today’s update, Jagex has placed two bank boosters on the RuneScape cash shop for free to active subscribers. Members can currently get their hands on three bank boosters for free, a total of 150 extra bank slots. Also available for free to members is a golden chinchompa pet, thrifty title, zen resting emote, and water dance emote.

The bank slots can be picked up via the Solomon’s General Store page on the official website.

Jagex Silences Solomon Over Player Outrage

Jagex has reigned in an update relating to a cash shop sale after customers complained that the promotion was obnoxious. In order to promote a month-long Solomon Store (cash shop) sale, Jagex placed a Solomon NPC within several cities to banter on about his deals. Players criticized the NPC text as spam, noting that in many locations he was appearing next to town heralds who were also promoting the same sale.

In response, Jagex quickly removed the Solomon NPCs from all locations except his permanent home in Varrok, while town heralds are still promoting the sale at a less intrusive rate. Jagex has since apologized over Twitter, declaring the NPC placement to be a mistake.

RuneScape’s cash shops continue to be a hot button issue over the perception that content is being withheld from the game in order to be monetized over limited time Treasure Hunter promotions.

Say what you want about Squeal of Fortune and Solomon’s Store, Jagex’s two cash shop ventures in RuneScape, but they have brought in oodles of money. 2012 has become Jagex’s biggest year to date, with income spiraling above the fifty million pound mark for the first time in the company’s history. Jagex is now the largest independent game studio in the UK with over five hundred employees, and has boasted an influx of users last year into RuneScape as well as the recent release of RuneScape 2007, a classic ruleset server.

2013 looks to be an even better year for a game that has reportedly been dying since 2005, depending on which player you ask.

Jagex Begins Selling Extra Bank Spaces In Cash Shop


File this one under undermining your own values. A good long time ago I reported that Jagex was considering adding an authenticator-style security dongle to RuneScape, an idea that was scrapped after community backlash over a very simple perk. In order to encourage people to buy the dongle, Jagex wanted to offer a small expansion in bank space. Ultimately, of course, the reason Jagex gave for the withdrawal was that the company considered selling bank space as an unfair advantage, and that doing so would violate the company’s policy of not selling in-game advantages for cash.

Welcome to 2012, Jagex. In today’s update, players are now able to buy bank space. Not just a small amount of bank space, up to 250 extra spaces. Nonmembers will be able to expand their bank up to 4.2 (over the current 78) times its current limit, and allow members to increase their bank space by around 50% (over the current 468). Each expansion costs approximately $8 and offers 50 extra bank spaces, the whole group will cost around $40.

So did Jagex lie about the Bank of RuneScape image being fake, or was the appearance of the image last week just a really well timed coincidence?

RuneScape Opens Cash Shop, Sells Cosmetic Items


Earlier this year, Jagex introduced Squeal of Fortune, a daily gambling mini-game where players use tickets to spin for anything from experience boosts, gold, limited availability items, and even high end armor and weapons. Since its release, Squeal of Fortune has been expanded to include exclusive rare items, and Jagex has opened the shop to players to purchase spins with real money. At the time, this raised concerns that Jagex had plans to open a cash shop.

Around now would be where those same people will message their friends and say “I told you so.” Today Jagex released Soloman’s Shop, introducing a fully fledged cash shop into RuneScape. With its initial launch, Jagex will only offer purely cosmetic items for sale. Players are able to buy cosmetic outfits, new “enhanced” animations, emotes, titles, and more. The shop is run on Runecoins, which can be purchased at the price of $4.99 per 200 points, with higher purchases receiving bonus coins similar to Squeal of Fortune with free spins. Items range widely in price, up to 900 for a banner that tells everyone how awesome you are, and 1620 for a complete pack of assassin outfits and emotes.

Members can redeem 200 points for free for the time being, and also receive a 10% discount on items purchased through the store. Free players are not so lucky, however they do have access to the Solomon’s Store.
