Less Massive: Ubisoft Offers Unity Compensation

Assassin’s Creed Unity launched on November 11th, and since then has proven itself to be quite problematic for Ubisoft. The seventh major installment in the series of the same name launched with heavy technical issues, from performance problems to humorous graphical glitches (as seen above). Since the game launched, Ubisoft has launched at least two major patches with the third coming this week, and has been busy cleaning up the public relations end of dealing with dissatisfied customers.

As compensation, Ubisoft has discontinued the season pass, making the upcoming Dead Kings DLC free for everyone. Owners of the season pass or gold edition are eligible for one free Ubisoft game, including very recent releases like Far Cry 4 and The Crew. You can find more details at the link below.

Ghost Recon Online Renamed Phantoms

Ghost Recon Online is still making its way toward launch, and Ubisoft announced today that the shooter isn’t just getting a new face, but a new name. Going forward, Ghost Recon Online is being renamed Ghost Recon Phantoms, bringing with it a new art direction, new characters, and reworking of lighting and level design.

Ghost Recon Phantoms brings a narrative layer to the game based around The Phantoms, ex- Ghosts and current adversaries who left The Ghosts to pursue personal agendas. We’ve also added new gameplay elements to expand the depth of the game. Of course, no accounts will be wiped, and our current players will not have to start over.

The new look and name are coming on April 10th.

MQEL_Screenshot_Open_Beta_Knight_1_EN

The drawbridge has been lowered and the hoards are rolling in. Ubisoft has opened up the Mighty Quest for Epic Loot, dropping the NDA and bringing the game into open beta. The game of building up your own base while raiding those of your neighbors is now freely available to anyone without the need for an invitation. Choose from three available heroes (with a fourth available through a cash pack) and hire minions to defend your loot. Raid your friend’s castles and bring their defenses down and steal from their coffers.

Check it out at the link below. Keep in mind that, given this is open beta, a wipe is always possible if called for, although none are planned at this time.

Ubisoft Compromised, Change Your Passwords

TheDivision

This is one of those “if you’ve been affected then you likely already know about it” sort of articles. Those of you who have accounts with Ubisoft were no doubt delighted to see the following email in your inbox:

We recently found that one of our Web sites was exploited to gain unauthorized access to some of our online systems. We instantly took steps to close off this access, investigate the incident and begin restoring the integrity of any compromised systems. During this process, we learned that data had been illegally accessed from our account database, including user names, email addresses and encrypted passwords. Please note that no personal payment information is stored with Ubisoft, meaning your debit/credit card information was safe from this intrusion.

If you have an Ubisoft account, either through uPlay or their other services, and you haven’t received an email, make sure to check your spam folder. Some users are reporting that the email was shelved as a suspected phishing attempt by Gmail and a couple other services. You can find out more at the link below.

Ubisoft's MMO Is The Division

TheDivision

We’ve suspected an incoming Ubisoft MMO for quite a while, ever since the developer/publisher posted that they were hiring for an unnamed online RPG. At Ubisoft’s conference at this year’s E3, Ubisoft’s David Polfeldt revealed that the game is a massive online shooter named The Division. Not a whole lot is known about the game, other than that it is a third person, massive online shooter set in the United States approximately 72 hours after a biological terrorist attack sends the country into panic. The player is part of a group tasked with maintaining order.

The title has been confirmed for PS4 and XB1 with no PC version planned. The game is planned for release in 2014.

Security Warning: Massive Exploit In Ubisoft UPlay Games

[UPDATE] The exploit has been patched.

“We have made a forced patch to correct the flaw in the browser plug-in for the Uplay PC application that was brought to our attention earlier today. We recommend that all Uplay users update their Uplay PC application without a Web browser open. This will allow the plug-in to update correctly. An updated version of the Uplay PC installer with the patch also is available from Uplay.com.

Ubisoft takes security issues very seriously, and we will continue to monitor all reports of vulnerabilities within our software and take swift action to resolve such issues.”

[Original Story] What does this have to do with MMO Fallout? Nothing, admittedly. Rock Paper Shotgun is currently reporting on an extremely dangerous exploit in a handful of Ubisoft titles, specifically those that make use of the Uplay DRM. While the exploit has not been 100% confirmed, a vulnerability has been discovered which allows a website to pull up the Uplay window and install anything to its hearts content. Essentially a hijacked website could load up a user’s computer with viruses, key loggers, trojan horses, or other destructive software. According to the article, this exploit can also be accomplished via a simple email.

As the article also points out, this is not a rootkit, the exploit is in the browser plugin. If you want to lean on the side of extra security, you may want to uninstall the games completely. The (incomplete) list of affected games is below:

Assassin’s Creed II
Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood
Assassin’s Creed: Project Legacy
Assassin’s Creed Revelations
Assassin’s Creed III
Beowulf: The Game
Brothers in Arms: Furious 4
Call of Juarez: The Cartel
Driver: San Francisco
Heroes of Might and Magic VI
Just Dance 3
Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands
Pure Football
R.U.S.E.
Shaun White Skateboarding
Silent Hunter 5: Battle of the Atlantic
The Settlers 7: Paths to a Kingdom
Tom Clancy’s H.A.W.X. 2
Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Future Soldier
Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Conviction
Your Shape: Fitness Evolved

Ubisoft Hiring For Online RPG, Could Be MMO

The world of Assassin’s Creed is frightening enough with just what characters we have, but thousands of would-be assassins running around? Horrifying. According to Gamespy, Ubisoft is hiring for a next generation online RPG, and rumors are floating around that this may be an Assassin’s Creed MMO.

Given Ubisoft’s wide array of IPs, the game could be just about anything, including the possibility of a new/outside IP altogether. Of course, the game could just wind up being a fantasy MMO based around the Might and Magic series.

Let the speculation begin!
