And it made me learn Spanish.
I downloaded Ultimo Reino today because it is free and it looks a bit like an Ultima Online style game. Otherwise I can’t say no to supporting the indie devs, even if they might not know what they are doing. I should absolutely note before we continue that Ultimo Reino is in beta. I think. I hope.
If you install Ultimo Reino you’ll probably get to the point screenshotted above, quit, and uninstall the game. This is the first thing you see upon logging in and if you don’t know to right click to dismiss it, you’re not going to get far. This is exactly the kind of quality you can expect from Ultimo Reino.
Ultimo Reino controls a lot like Ultima Online if it existed in a 3D world. You move with WASD or right click, attack with the left click, and can auto-loot most basic items (coins, potions) by simply walking over them. One thing you’ll notice in the image above is that a lot of the game is in Spanish. There is nothing you can do about that. The rest of the game is in mostly broken English including my favorite moment when the game congratulates you for “winning a level” every time you level up.
Unfortunately Ultimo takes a rough turn once you hit level 5 because enemies become aggressive toward you and attack on sight, leading to many situations where you will just be mobbed and killed instantly. This is especially true since you’ll probably still have 10hp at level 5 and even early enemies are very closely positioned.
Crafting seems to consist of buying single use items and using them near a crafting facility. I received several generic ingots that crafted into different items (iron, steel, copper) with no rhyme or reason. Crafting appears to be completely random as to what you will get, and it is cumbersome as you have to equip the one-use items every time.
I don’t know why the folks at IberoGames decided to put this out as released, it is nowhere near finished. At the very least, it doesn’t charge anything.
