PSA: Ubisoft Isn’t Going To Take Your Games For Inactivity

We go to the source for clarity.

Given that MMO Fallout has its finger on the pulse of the gaming community it was only a matter of time until we followed up on Ubisoft’s new terms of service. One particular piece that has been catching a lot of attention over the past few days is over a clause dealing with account termination. Specifically the clause states that an account may be terminated “upon notification, where your Account has been inactive for more than six months.”

Naturally people have been responding to this clause with the utmost of rationality and reasonable discussion. I’m just kidding, some people are losing their minds over the claim that Ubisoft is just going to take away your account with hundreds of dollars worth of games because you didn’t log in for two straight fiscal quarters. So instead of just pointing out how ridiculous the claim was, I decided to go straight to the source: Ubisoft.

I reached out to Ubisoft’s PR contact about the clause and got a pretty straightforward answer; no this does not mean you’re going to lose the games you paid for with hard-earned cash because you went on vacation. The clause covers accounts that meet a certain set of facts such as an inactive account that has never bought or played any games, and overall the goal is compliance with specific local laws related to data retention that may apply to some user jurisdictions rather than Ubisoft just arbitrarily taking games away.

There is also a purpose in removing empty, unused accounts when Ubisoft is cleaning their databases, but I have been told that process is generally on a much longer timeline than the six months in the Terms of Service. What is more, assuming that parked account you set up that has no games bought on it does get flagged, as the clause notes you will be notified with the opportunity to respond before the account is disabled.

So don’t worry, Ubisoft is not just going to arbitrarily take away your account and delete your Division 2 progress.

Thank you to Ubisoft for responding to my inquiry.
