RuneScape Hard-Filters Hard Racism

Because the community is toxic.

(Editor’s note: The headline was clarified as it made it appear that this would only affect one of the two versions)

RuneScape is known for many things and one of those things is a relatively small but very loud toxic portion of the community. In a world where long, arduous grinds for resources is not just common but a way of life, the only hurdle that certain members of the community can’t seem to jump over is one involving not dropping a bunch of racist slurs.

In this week’s patch notes, Jagex dropped the f-bomb and announced that the chat filter would be updated in July to hard-ban certain words regardless of whether the player has their filter turned on or off.

So to start with, we’re going to be hard-filtering a number of hateful words and phrases. This means that some words will be censored regardless of whether the profanity filter is toggled off. The banned words and phrases have no place within Gielinor, and there is not a time or a place when they would need to be said.

The update goes into effect in early July.
