Activision Made $1.2 Billion In Microtransactions Last Quarter

Activision releases quarterly income.

Activision has released their third quarter financial results and they are pretty damn good. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Warzone saw three times as many monthly active users as the prior title last year while PC users grew tenfold year over year. People are even playing Call of Duty more at seven times the rate, an understandable result from this year’s quarantine and job losses. Call of Duty Mobile is getting ready to launch in China where it has 50 million pre-registrations.

Activision Blizzard’s net revenues were $1.95 billion compared to $1.28 billion in 2019 over the same quarter. What is especially interesting is that in-game net bookings amounted to $1.2 billion compared to $709 million in 2019. This means that a large portion of Activision Blizzard’s revenue (over 60%) now comes from in-game purchases as opposed to game sales.

World of Warcraft posted its highest engagement prior to an expansion launch in a decade with Shadowlands presales ahead of any prior expansion. Overwatch had 10 million monthly active users in the quarter, four years after launch.
