Steam: Spanish Taxes Drives Steam Game Free

Two Weeks in Painland goes free.

Two Weeks In Painland is presently free on Steam and it looks like the game will be free for the rest of forever, or at the very least for the duration that the game is still available to acquire. The culprit in this case is one we really haven’t seen before due mostly in part to the rather small size of the Spanish games industry.

In a post on the official forums developer Unusual Games noted that keeping Two Weeks in Painland available for purchase wasn’t economically feasible. This stems from the tax law in Spain requiring them to pay monthly taxes just for being on sale, regardless of how many copies the game actually sold. It sounds ridiculous, but it’s true.

What does this have to do with making the game free? Well, at least in Spain having the game up for sale on Steam costs us quite a bit in monthly government taxes, whether we sell a hundred copies, ten, or even zero. As it stands, every month it’s for sale, we lose money. So rather than pull it off from the Steam store, we’d rather keep the game here, free, so as many players as possible can enjoy it. That was always the main goal, the possibility of making a living out of it was an added bonus.

You can download Two Weeks in Painland completely free of charge at the links above. And give the developers some of your love.
