Soulfire: Costs Money, No Players

Disappointing.

I chatted about Soulfire way back in the yesteryear of August 2020 and since the game has been out for six months I wanted to check back in and see how things were doing. Now Soulfire launched on Steam on August 3 and by the time I checked it out on August 25 it was basically dead. The pricing had gone through a tumultuous history as Aydream had sold it in early access for as high as $17 since the Early Access launch.

If you don’t know Soulfire (and you probably don’t) the game is a 2D blend of Castlevania and battle royale. In my review I said it wasn’t bad. The bots were mostly competent to fill in for the lack of players and the game wasn’t horrible for a free to play BR title.

The good news is that Soulfire bot players can still mostly hold their own. The bad news is that there is still nobody playing this game. Less so than last time. The worse news is that Aydream decided to start charging for the game again. The game costs $6.99 now which in addition to the completely absent player base is still accompanied by free to play cash shop and season pass. Aydream has seemingly abandoned development as there hasn’t been a Steam news post since July 2020.

There are zero people playing Soulfire right now. There was one when I was playing it. With a $7 price tag there will continue to be zero people playing Soulfire. Granted there were zero people playing when the price tag was $0 as well.
