Steam: Valve Cancels Artifact 2.0

Amid a week of cancellations.

It’s been quite a week. Valve today joined the chorus of cancellations by announcing they will cease development of Artifact 2.0. Artifact launched in 2018 to incredibly negative response from the community, seeing almost its entire population dissolve within just a couple of months out of launch. Valve launched a 2.0 reboot attempt as a show of good faith to their community. Evidently that good faith ran out.

It’s now been about a year and a half since the current Artifact team began work on a reboot in earnest. While we’re reasonably satisfied we accomplished most of our game-side goals, we haven’t managed to get the active player numbers to a level that justifies further development at this time. As such, we’ve made the tough decision to stop development on the Artifact 2.0 Beta.

Both Artifact and the 2.0 beta will become completely free, with all cards provided to the community. Bought cards will become collector’s items which will remain marketable. The good news is that the game will be completely free, no strings attached. The bad news is that likely nobody is going to be playing it.

The worse news is that those who invested money are being given a whole load of nothing.
