Valve Swings Banhammer On Cheaters

40,000 accounts banned.

Valve announced the ban of over 40,000 accounts in Dota 2 this week for use of a third party cheat program that allowed them to gain access to previously hidden information. The update comes alongside an update fixing said exploit, as well as an explanation of how Valve caught these folks.

By using their exploit to reveal them.

This patch created a honeypot: a section of data inside the game client that would never be read during normal gameplay, but thatĀ couldĀ be read by these exploits. Each of the accounts banned today read from this “secret” area in the client, giving us extremely high confidence that every ban was well-deserved.’
