Game to shut down at the end of November.
Gundam Evolution is the latest casualty of the gaming industry throwing everything it can into the live service trend. Namco Bandai announced the game’s closure just ten whole months after it launched, with the servers going live September 21, 2022 on PC and November 30 on consoles.
The game launched on Steam to a 56,000 player peak, a figure that would gradually fall and remain under 1,000 concurrent users by July 2023. The story is a tale as old as time; developer launches game with critical problems and never addresses them leading to disgruntled players leaving. What they do address however is making sure the cash shop works great.
Gundam Evolution had a lot of problems. Quitters ruining games with little to no punishment, server stability, the cost of microtransactions, the quality of cosmetics, the quality of the game itself, not backfilling matches, lack of publicity and advertising.
In short, Bandai Namco like many developers forgot you need to actually provide a service for the whole “live service” thing to work out. Servers shut down November 29.
