Google Showers Stadia Developers In Cash

Revenue splits to incentivize anyone to use the platform.

Google Stadia announced this week plans to shower developers in cash for getting someone, anyone, to try the service. The new payment model discussed by Games Industry reveals that Google will pay developers who put games on Stadia Pro a share of the pool made up of 70% of revenue from Pro subscriptions. Developers will be paid out based on activity by players within the game, so the more people playing on more days means more money.

For titles sold individually, Google is also reducing its take to a mere 15% for the next two years. Developers will earn 85% on the first $3 million in sales and will apparently come to an end at the end of 2023. And finally Google are turning Stadia devs into marketing affiliates, offering a $10 bonus for every user converted into a Pro subscriber.

Stadia has struggled to build a market presence as a streaming-only game service since its launch in 2019, with services significantly scaled back over the course of 2021, the closure of Google’s internal game development studios, and the departure of several key people.
