Neverwinter Expansion Coming Later This Spring

nw_screenshot_032913_DevilMonster_006

Perfect World Entertainment has announced that another expansion is set to launch in Neverwinter later this Spring. Module 3, titled Curse of Icewind Dale, introduces players to the iconic region of the same name. Icewind Dale is being overtaken by a mysterious presence called the black ice, and it is up to players to utilize this handy resource for their own purposes. Players will be able to harvest, shape, and craft black ice into new gear offering extensive but temporary boosts to their abilities. Also new with the module is the addition of PvE and PvP campaigns, alongside achievements, bosses, encounters, and more.

MMOrning Shots: Bridge To Nowhere

screenshot_2014-02-24-07-59-33

Today’s MMOrning Shot comes to us from Neverwinter, where traveling across a bridge built from what appears to be a giant pillar has left me with some second thoughts. In fact, I’ll wait here until the engineers in Protector’s Enclave develop a flying machine, or sturdy handrailing, or both.

Check out MMOrning Shots every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

Neverwinter Permanently Drops Prices

screenshot_2013-12-23-10-46-03

Over at Neverwinter, prices are falling faster than snowflakes on something that repels snowflakes, I am not very good with analogies. What I can tell you is that companions are currently on sale for 60% off until December 30th, after which the deal will be almost as sweet. When the sale does end on Monday, prices will be permanently reduced by up to 47%. Reductions depend on the rarity level of the companion, but range from 29% off to 47% off for the rarest and most common respectively.

Companions will be priced between 800 and 2500 zen, which can still be obtained in-game by trading astral diamonds, following the update on December 30th.

Neverwinter Reflects On 2013

Neverwinter_Screenshot_JeweloftheNorth_012513_jpeg2

The end of the year is upon us, and what better time to look back at events that have transpired? Over at Perfect World Entertainment, Lead Producer Andy Velasquez took some time to talk about Neverwinter’s first year, or half year to be more specific. The note thanks players for providing extensive feedback regarding Shadowmantle, and notes the team charged with creating the game’s multiple events.

Shadowmantle has been our largest update thus far, and I am extremely proud of my team for being able to get it done so quickly while maintaining a high quality product. As always, there are things that we learned from this expansion that we will look to improve upon in our development process.

Velasquez also notes the release of a separate Russian shard, and how there are (naturally) more updates on the way. Neverwinter was, of course, not without mishaps its first year, including astral diamond dupes, auction house exploits, and the release of the banhammer on foundry exploits.

MMOrning Shots: Winter Festival

screenshot_2013-12-23-10-46-03

Today’s MMOrning Shot comes to us from me, more specifically the very dangerous act of walking out onto a frozen lake in heavy metal armor. One of Neverwinter’s claims to holiday events has been to include a temporary skill that lasts for the duration of the event, and give players another thing to grind for. For the winter event, which thankfully caps out at level three, the skill is mostly just good for upgrading your fishing pole and finding better lures. There are fireworks and a few other pieces here and there, but the meat of the grind is for lights of simril from the various events.

If you fish up my corpse, have the dignity to bury the body.

Lessons From 2013 #10: Something About Hyperbole

tumblr_liqd5mKlkG1qf5b6po1_500

I love my audience, each and every one of you, but let’s be honest: We have a habit of taking jokes out of context when they come from people or organizations that we don’t like. I’m not trying to shame anyone, I fall into that same trap myself from time to time. It’s easy to call someone a liar when they are clearly exaggerating or being facetious.

Still, that didn’t stop people from taking Perfect World Entertainment seriously when they revealed a joke infographic detailing how Neverwinter is actually an annual savings of $25 million USD if you look at it the right way. Or they were just looking for something to complain about. Or they can’t take a joke. Or they have a strange grudge against people they never met who make a game they likely don’t play.

MMOrning Shots: Never Taller

I knew that Dwarves were supposed to be short, but this is ridiculous! With the recent release of Module 2, Shadowmantle, I want to wait at least until I get my main character up to max level before I buy the pack and create a hunter ranger, but at the same time I know that will probably never happen. In fact, the “I’ll wait until I hit the level cap” is probably the best idea I’ve come up with to stop myself from making a whole lot of cash shop purchases, because for me it’s like saying “I’ll wait until the sun dies.” Those of you who read MMO Fallout probably know that I am notoriously slow at leveling as it is and this website doesn’t help bumping me around from game to game.

But enough about me, how are you?

Neverwinter Readying Server Mergers

Neverwinter_Screenshot_JeweloftheNorth_012513_jpeg2

Neverwinter’s upcoming server merger is no surprise, the company has been straightforward about the fact that the three servers were there to spread out launch traffic as much as possible, and that they would be combined as soon as possible. In an FAQ posted to the Neverwinter forums, Perfect World has noted that the merger is close to being ready and will be rolled out as soon as possible.

We have always been fans of the single-shard model, and like our previous games, we’ve always wanted to optimize Neverwinter’s infrastructure to be able to meet this goal. We are excited to be close to meeting this goal and are excited about allowing all players in our game world to be able to communicate and group with one another.

The good news is that thanks to Perfect World’s unique handle system, players do not need to worry about changing their character name or guild name even if there are duplicates. When the merger does go through, all auctions will automatically expire and either sell to the highest bidder or return to the seller if there are no bids. Astral Diamond exchange orders will be withdrawn as well, and all mail and currencies will be merged to the new server. There is no timeline on when the merger will take place other than “very soon.”

Cryptic Makes Neverwinter Gateway More Useful

gateway

If you haven’t played Neverwinter, the crafting system is similar to Fallen Earth: You click a few buttons and then wait for the cooldown timer to stop. Gathering iron ore? That’s ten minutes. Researching new potions? That’s fifteen minutes. You unlock more research “slots” by leveling up your characters and leveling your crafting skills. Needless to say, the system is higher maintenance than your average MMO and can lead to the frustrating system of having to log in just to keep your professions going.

The good news is that you don’t have to log in to work your professions. Neverwinter’s Gateway allows players to log into a character and make use of some game functions when not logged in. Gamers have access to the auction house to buy and sell items and manage their bids. They can also work on professions, starting research and collecting results, and checking your mail and character stats.

gateway2

The good news is that Neverwinter’s Fury of the Feywild update will bring much more functionality to the Gateway system. Players will be able to sort their inventory, discard items, open chests, and sell junk for gold. Professions will now allow for buying required materials straight from the market right through your browser, and the Zen market will be open through the browser to making purchases.

Those of you with Neverwinter accounts can check out the test page for the new Gateway here.

Rift Tops Raptr’s Charts For June

caas-most_played_june2013

Let me put my hard hat on real quick. Alright. Raptr is a desktop app similar to Xfire that we’ve featured here on MMO Fallout because it not only tracks your game time and achievements across your consoles, it also regularly gives free stuff at the cost of absolutely nothing. Thanks to a strong promotional effort between Raptr and Trion, Rift came out on top as the most played game of June, with a whopping 13% of the pie. World of Warcraft came in at #5 with three MMOs dropping out from last month’s list: Defiance, Neverwinter, and The Old Republic.

As far as PC games go, Guild Wars 2 ranked #7 with The Old Republic at #10, Neverwinter at #12, Star Trek Online at #14, Marvel Heroes at #17, and Microvolts at #18. Defiance showed up as #13 most played games on the Xbox 360.

You can check out the top lists at the link below.
