Marvel Dooms Its Heroes: Marvel Heroes to Shut Down

A representative from Marvel has confirmed that the company has ended its licencing relationship with Gazillion Entertainment, and that Marvel Heroes will officially shut down in the near future. Marvel Heroes initially launched in 2013 on PC, and most recently on the PS4 and Xbox.

Rumors of turbulence within the company have been swirling around for months, including allegations of sexual misconduct by the current CEO. Some saw the writing on the wall when Gazillion went silent for weeks regarding future development plans.

The statement by Marvel is as follows:

“We regret to inform our Marvel Heroes fans that we have ended our relationship with Gazillion Entertainment, and that the Marvel Heroes games will be shut down. We would like to sincerely thank the players who joined the Marvel Heroes community, and will provide any further updates as they become available.”

No time table for the shutdown has been given at this time.

Marvel Heroes Omega Will Overhaul Its Omega Prestige System

The unveiling of Omega prestige for Marvel Heroes Omega wasn’t entirely positive, with many players taking umbrage with the newly introduced seventy Omega prestige levels. As each prestige level offers more power, in order to fully kit out your character, that means reaching Omega prestige and then going through the increasingly arduous leveling process seventy times, going back to level one each time, losing your powers, and having to re-gear.

As a result, Gazillion has laid out plans for omega prestige going forward, including adding the benefits of Omega up front rather than requiring players to level up over and over again to become more powerful:

Instead of removing power entirely, we are instead frontloading some of the bonuses onto Omega Prestige 1 (final values still being determined). This means that the Omega Traits will have much more potency as soon as they are acquired, and will not require any further leveling to get more powerful. All of the power gained from Omega Prestige will be given immediately, up-front.

To make omega prestige levels attractive, Gazillion will begin rewarding currency for each prestige level gained that can be redeemed for prestigious loot boxes containing boosts and other rewards. Characters who prestige will also receive scaling gear that should mitigate the grind to re-roll gear. The prestige gear will grow with the player and inevitably be replaced by higher tier gear closer to end-game.

Omega Prestige Hits Marvel Heroes on August 31

Marvel Heroes is giving its players what they’ve demanded, if your demands include more incentive to grind, by introducing a new prestige tier. Set to launch on August 31, Omega Prestige continues the leveling system of resetting your character to level 1 for costumes (on PC) and increased ranks (on pc and console). Omega prestige will increase its rank for each time you hit 60, up to 70 times. Since Omega Prestige is a big change, Gazillion has announced that it will be rolled out on a character by character basis, starting with Spider Man.

With the new Omega Prestige system, we will introduce “Omega Prestige” status for select heroes with a new “Omega Prestige Rank” system for those looking to unlock the true potential of a hero and to help prepare players for more challenging end-game content coming soon. Omega Prestige marks the culmination of your hero’s journey. This is an extension of the normal Prestige system, extending end-game playtime considerably for anyone who is up to the challenge.

Perks include:

  • 60 second reduction for ultimate ability
  • Doubled stat boosts from synergy bonuses
  • A unique legendary item
  • A prestige nameplate
  • A prestige flourish (spray)
  • And more!

For those of you on console who don’t feel like hitting prestige rank 6, Gazillion is selling a pack to unlock Omega prestige for $40. The pack will be available for one month starting August 31. For more information, check out the link below.

[Community] Why the Marvel Heroes Store Change Matters

Last week MMO Fallout reported on Gazillion Entertainment reducing the price of storage by 50% and refusing to reimburse people who had already made purchases. I’ve seen a lot of discussion on this, both for and against the decision, and I wanted to discuss why this is a topic that needs attention.

First off, let me qualify that whenever the term refund or reimbursement is brought up in this article I’m strictly speaking in terms of cash shop currency. I’m not suggesting, nor do I think many would expect, Gazillion to hand out hundreds of one or two dollar refunds over the PSN. In the grand scheme of things, Gazillion could have easily run a check to see who had purchased the storage upgrades and set the system to place the G’s back in their wallet, or just grant them extra storage for the equivalent new price. But they didn’t.

Gazillion is obligated to do something for its early backers, not because it’s written into law but because of how Marvel Heroes is being marketed and sold to consumers. I’ve seen a lot of people comparing this to buying a product and then complaining when it goes on sale, a comment which I have to say is wrong on two levels. First, this isn’t a normal product that you buy from a store. It’s a digital good that you’re buying for an as of yet unreleased video game. The cost didn’t come down because of a sale, but because Gazillion made some adjustments and found the price to be too high based on user feedback. As a short second, most stores will reimburse you if an item you bought goes on sale shortly after.

This calls back to an issue that we’ve talked about for years: Developers deciding that open beta now means soft launch, allowing them to effectively launch the game and monetize it while claiming immunity from strong criticism because it’s just a beta. You can’t have it both ways without risking trust issues with your customer base, which is why the first thing that most developers do when they launch a game these days is hammer down the cash shop. It may seem like priorities in the wrong place, but it stops moments like this from happening.

Another point I’ve seen come up is on the idea of products coming out and immediately going on sale. Yes, that does happen and it is not received positively by the customer base for whom it becomes a reason to not trust the developer/publisher. While it may not be particularly egregious, you risk burning out customers early because what you’re telling them is that you don’t have your stuff in order, and you’re willing to make them foot the bill for it. It’s the new form of old developers who sold long subscription times on the premise that they would never go free to play, only to make liars out of their PR people.

Otherwise I have no opinion on the matter.
