Construction Hits Planetside 2

901

Daybreak Game Company has deployed the latest major update to Planetside 2, introducing the ability for players to deploy custom fortifications. The three factions are now competing, in addition to territory, for Cortium, a resource that can only be harvested using 4-man transport vehicles known as ANTs. An ANT also grants schematics to create new buildings like Cortium silos and HIVEs which generate victory points over time.

Cortium, a powerful new mineral, has recently been unearthed. This limited resource allows for the near-instantaneous deployment of player-built fortifications. The discovery of Cortium has prompted the deployment of Advanced Nanite Transports (ANTs), which harvest the mineral and convert it into material that can be used in the field.

In addition to Cortium, the entire continent of Indar has been reconstructed. Numerous outposts have been renovated or outright removed in order to make room for player-built bases.

Planetside 2 Shutting Down In China

planetside2image2

Planetside 2 China joins the growing list of Daybreak Game Company products that have shut down or will be shutting down shortly. As reported by MMO Culture, Planetside 2’s Chinese publisher The9 announced that it would not be renewing its contract with Daybreak to publish the massively multiplayer shooter and will be taking the servers down at the end of May. According to reports, despite the notable amount of money spent promoting the title, Planetside 2’s venture in the east never wound up receiving many updates.

The9 will instead be focusing on the upcoming launch of Firefall.

Planetside 2: Here Today, Gone In Korea

planetside2image2

Playstation 4 users have reason to rejoice, as Planetside 2 is now out of beta and officially launched in North America and Europe. The game is available for free in the Playstation Store, and players can access the full game without an active subscription to Playstation Plus.

“The original  PlanetSide  was the first MMOFPS, PlanetSide 2 set a new standard for shooters when it launched on the PC in 2012, and now the massive battles are unmatched on the console. The game is synonymous with large-scale warfare and there’s just no comparison,” said Andy Sites,  PlanetSide  2 director of development. “PlanetSide 2  fosters a unique kind of unwavering camaraderie among players, so we’re excited to see how our community grows on the PlayStation 4.”

Planetside 2’s launch on Playstation 4 comes alongside the announcement that the title will be shutting down in Korea. Publisher Daum Games announced the closure citing low population, lack of interest, “incompatible cash shop,” and problems with updating the game.

Planetside 2 No Longer Supports 32 Bit Clients

planetside2image2

Planetside 2 is dropping support for 32-bit clients in next week’s game update, as announced by RadarX on the official forums. While some players will be locked out of the game, Daybreak’s metrics show the number to be minimal.

We wanted to let you know that with the next Game Update (tentatively scheduled for next week), PlanetSide 2 will no longer support the use of the 32-bit Operating System client. We do note, based on our internal metrics, that a very small group of folks are still using this client. We hope this doesn’t prove too inconvenient to anyone impacted, and we appreciate your understanding.

The news is not entirely unexpected, as Planetside 2 uses the same engine as Landmark which recently announced that it too would drop support for lower end operating systems.

John Smedley Discusses The Future Of Planetside 2

2015-05-08_00003

While consumer confidence is still pretty shaky for Daybreak Game Studio, John Smedley has once again taken to Reddit to assure fans that, no, this is not the end. For Planetside 2, the team intends on working on the meta-game, the “why are we fighting” question that so far hasn’t had much of an answer aside from the experience of a massive team deathmatch.

We will be moving towards a system where resources are actually going to be a fun part of the game, and you’ll be able to harvest resources directly (in fact, that’s how you’re going to get them). and you’ll be able to use them to finally get to some of the end-game things we’ve been wanting to do – Outfit bases on new continents (and potentially on existing ones). We’re also going to be spending a lot of time to make sure capturing a facility actually matters, as well as looking at the overly-complicated capture system which can be pretty obtuse at times.

Next week will see the launch of a new game mode for Planetside 2, one that has an actual win condition.

In the months between now and September we’re going to be putting all kinds of new things into the game on a regular schedule. We’re also going to be committing to doing a better job on the Roadmap. The criticism that we do a poor job updating it is something that I think is both fair and accurate and it’s simply going to be done right.

Smedley remarks that he sees Planetside 2 being here in ten years and continuing to grow in player size.

Planetside 2: “We Are Actually Trying To Make Money.”

planetside2image2

John Smedley went on Twitter today to defend SOE’s decision to reduce the drop rate and effectiveness on implants to push players toward newly introduced, more powerful variants. In response to complaints that the update was a cash grab, Smedley responded via Twitter:

Sorry but we are actually trying to make money. I don’t consider it a money grab.

Smedley later pointed out on Twitter that the changes were due to the original drop rates being too high.

Planetside 2 Automated Turrets Being Balanced

planetside2image2

Sony Online Entertainment is currently planning on implementing automated turrets into Planetside 2, and is soliciting feedback via the forums and through an update set to hit the public test server in the next few weeks. Turrets will be stationary objects, likely only available to the engineer class, and the hope is to release them in November/December.

“The current plan is to have a stress test on the Public Test Server with prototype turrets in late October/early November to evaluate server performance. We’ll need a sizable population on PTS to get useful data so we’ll organize a time, date and testing instructions when we’re ready. If our tests go well, we are aiming for auto-turrets to go live late November/early December.”

How should automated turrets be implemented in Planetside 2?

SOE Devs Read Calm, Intelligent Tweets

planetside2image2

Given that the internet is well known as a place of social interaction, it stands to reason that only the sociable of us would make use of its services. Sony Online Entertainment has celebrated this by posting a video where developers read calm, intelligent, well thought out tweets by players with a firm grasp of the English language. Enjoy.

Planetside 2 Playstation 4 Beta In 2014

planetside2image2

Sony Online Entertainment took some time to speak about Planetside 2 at this year’s SOE Live. While they can’t promise anything, the goal is to have a beta version of Planetside 2’s Playstation 4 version available to players by the end of the year. The PC version is still on track for its regular updates, with this month bringing in new mentoring systems as well as new vehicles and battle islands which will introduce smaller scale combat areas and new objectives other than simply capturing territory.

PC and PS4 players will not play against one another when the latter comes out later this year.

Planetside 2 Will Feature Weekly Updates

planetside2image2

Matt Higby from Sony Online Entertainment posted a thread on the Planetside 2 forums detailing that the company plans on expediting updates to better service the MMO shooter. Starting January 15th, Planetside 2 will enjoy weekly updates to address bugs, balancing, and more. There will still be large updates to the game, that will be included with the weekly updates as they become ready for release, but the overall goal is to allow SOE to work on bug fixing and balancing at a faster pace.

One final note, the first couple of these weekly updates are going to be a bit smaller than what you can expect to see later on, as we’re still shaking off the holiday cobwebs and getting used to the new development processes.
