Two diametrically opposite reactions.
This week’s news comes to us from Steam and Epic, as one company seeks to ban NFT games and the other openly embraces them. Our story kicked off from the developers of Age of Rust, a first-person adventure game where players collect NFTs to solve puzzles. The developer took to Twitter to announce that the game would not release on Steam as planned, as Valve now has a blanket ban on games utilizing NFTs, cryptocurrency, and the blockchain.
Steam’s point of view is that items have value and they don’t allow items that can have real-world value on their platform. While I respect their choice, I fundamentally believe that NFTs and blockchain games are the future. It’s why I started this journey with all of you.

NFTs have proven to be a controversial topic over the last few months, with critics citing their environmental impact and a recent string of NFT-based games turning out to be a scam. On the other end of the spectrum, Tim Sweeney took to Twitter to announce that Epic will openly welcome games that utilize the blockchain on the Epic Games Store.
Epic Games Store will welcome games that make use of blockchain tech provided they follow the relevant laws, disclose their terms, and are age-rated by an appropriate group. Though Epic’s not using crypto in our games, we welcome innovation in the areas of technology and finance. https://t.co/6W7hb8zJBw
