Impressions: Fortnite Season 3 Drastically Simplifies Challenges

It’s finally here, folks.

Fortnite Season 3 is upon us and that means one thing: A new battle pass with new battle pass mechanics and new battle pass rewards. Season three works exactly how you would expect from prior battle passes: The pass itself costs 950 Vbucks ($9.50) and offers 1500 vbucks total for completing all 100 levels. What you’re really here for are the rewards.

As you can see from the header image, the Fortnite map has been completely destroyed by the doomsday device detonated by Midas at the end of the last season. Much of the map is covered in water, many of the landmarks we’ve come to know from season one and two have been destroyed, and overall there is a lot more swimming/boating.

Last season Fortnite introduced minions, characters from the game that could be “hired” as in adding their skins to your collection. This season is no different, but players might be happy to hear that some of the skins have been drastically simplified in their method of acquisition. For instance most of the minions had you complete 18 challenges per character to unlock whereas the default character skins here mostly all unlock just by leveling up your battle pass.

Season two featured six minions to recruit including Deadpool each with alternate skins that you needed to choose between one of two and lose the other forever. Here each recruitable character has two skins but you appear to be able to collect all of them. Unlike season two where recruitable characters were gradually rolled out over the season, all of the characters are available as soon as you reach their levels. Many of the alternate skins are rolled out over the season as they require you to complete challenges from numbered weeks in order to unlock.

Aquaman is unlocked by completing five challenges that will roll out over the next month. Unlike Deadpool, Aquaman’s challenges appear to be in the actual world itself where Deadpool’s challenges were mostly item hunting in the main menus.

Last season introduced a completely customizable character in Gear Specialist Maya. This season you’ll be customizing an umbrella with new part slots that unlock as you achieve higher battle pass levels. The Maya challenges were pretty simple and usually revolved around doing damage with specific weapons. These are even easier.

There are a few new weapons including the hunting rifle (sniper rifle without the scope), chug splashes (throwable healing item), bolt-action sniper rifle, charge shotgun, and epic/legendary tier compact submachine guns. This season has vaulted the pump shotgun as well as the heavy and suppressed versions of the sniper and assault rifle. It is also now possible to sidegrade submachine guns and bolt-action sniper rifles.

A ton of challenges have rolled out to assist people in leveling up their battle pass fast. In two team rumble matches I was able to level up by pass to 9.
