Jagex Making Open World Survival Game

Oh yes they are.

It’s been a while since I talked about Jagex and the Not-RuneScapes, and it’s about time to talk about them again. Now Jagex is one of those companies that works off and on on various projects, very rarely seeing them through to some sort of launch, and very rarely maintaining those that do launch for a notable amount of time. Well there’s a new game to add to that portfolio.

As I was stalking Jagex’s employment page this evening, I came across a new set of listings I hadn’t seen before. Not to say that they’re new, just that it’s been a good while since I checked the page. Jagex normally keeps their hiring pages very vague, with the most details we’ve received in the past noting that they are working on an Unreal engine title.

A posting for senior combat designer however directly details Jagex’s in-development title; a survival crafting game.

Oversee the design of Combat Gameplay Systems for Jagex’s new Open World Survival Craft game including combat mechanics, weapon design, ability and gear design as well as balance and tuning.

What we do know is that this game will be on Unreal 4 or Unreal 5, as the pitch prefers experience in both. Otherwise the job ad is pretty boilerplate, asking for an employee with both experience and lacking a habit for punching holes in the office wall with a handheld auger.

Another posting for a senior game designer notes:

Oversee the design of Combat Gameplay Systems for Jagex’s new Open World Survival Craft game including combat mechanics, weapon design, ability and gear design as well as balance and tuning.

Jagex’s hiring page has a separate section for another unannounced Unreal engine MMO, presumably the one that has been hiring for a few years now. We have to assume given the number of senior positions being advertised for that both games are still years out on release, but we will keep an eye out for you. The reader.
