City of Steam Coming To New Markets

I know what you’re thinking: “Omali, I want to try out City of Steam but I live in Turkey and only gained the ability to speak English for the sake of this email. What can Mechanist Games do for me?” The easy answer is: Everything. With the next beta weekend coming, Mechanist Games has put out a press release detailing some upcoming expansions. In the near future, City of Steam will be published in the Middle East, North Africa, and Turkey. Not only will the game be available in those regions, but gamers will be happy to see that it will be published in both Arabic and Turkish alongside the English version.

Closed beta testing in the Middle East, Turkey, and North Africa is scheduled for Q1 2013. If you would like to check out the closed beta tests currently ongoing, grab a key from our banner link at the top of the page.

SMITE Ultimate God Pack Giveaway And 400 Gems

Entrance is over. The winners shall be revealed in the morning.

Through the power of the internet, I am very happy to present a luck two of you with some great prizes. SMITE is currently in closed beta, and you can grab a closed beta key from our free stuff page here [keys are out] (as well as a copy of DOTA2). SMITE is a DOTA style game set in a battle between gods from Chinese, Egyptian, Greek, Hindu, Norse, and Roman mythology. While the game will be free to play upon release, here is a chance to get your hands on some pricey packs, absolutely free.

MMO Fallout is giving away two packs for SMITE.

 1. Ultimate God Pack ($29.99 USD value)
 2. 400 Gem Pack ($7.99 USD value)

The god pack unlocks 30 total gods, including the 25 current gods and 5 more that will come before release. If you win this pack, they will automatically be activated as they are released. The 400 gem pack contains just that, 400 gems. The rules to enter are simple:

 • Leave a comment with a valid email address and tell us which deity you most look forward to playing as.
 • Leave only one comment.
 • That’s it. Really.

The winner will be chosen on Friday November 16th and the winners will be notified via email. Thanks to the brand new MMO Fallout Super Star Comment System (trademark pending), this should go much better than our previous giveaways. Your comments should be approved immediately by the system. Good luck to everyone, and I will see two of you on Friday.

Remember to follow MMO Fallout here on the website and on Twitter for future giveaways.

Five More Glitch Invites

It is Glitch beta giveaway time! With the new changes to the comment system, your comments should be authenticated immediately. Hopefully we all know the rules, but for the uninitiated, let’s go over them one more time:

 1. Leave a comment with a valid email in the email box. Really, that’s it.
 2. The first five to comment are guaranteed an invite.
 3. You will need to respond to a confirmation email.
 4. Comment anyway. I get invites on a regular occasion and will simply go down the line.

Your email address will not be retained or used for any purpose except to confirm its validity before sending the invite.

Planetside 2 Alpha Squad Prepurchase

There seems to be a trend in MMO shooters lately. Both DUST 514 and Tribes: Ascend have offered pre-purchase packages, including benefits from currency to bonuses, and more importantly; beta access. Players intending on playing the game have an opportunity to both nab some exclusive items and gain access to the game early.

For $39.99, Sony Online Entertainment is selling the Alpha Squad package, including $40 worth of Station Cash, exclusive decals and titles, as well as instant beta access. The offer also includes twelve weapon unlocks. This package cannot be purchased with Station Cash. You are not sent a key, so access cannot be transferred.

While early access starts now, it is important to remember that Planetside 2 is still a long way from release. There will be regular server downtime, character wipes, and a whole lot of bugs and balance issues.

First Impressions: RuneScape Evolution of Combat

Note: This is a beta preview. All details are subject to change before the update goes live.

If I had one word to describe the RuneScape combat upgrade, it would be overwhelming. I don’t even know where to start with this preview, so buckle yourself in and let’s get rolling. RuneScape’s combat system has, for the most part, remained unchanged since RuneScape 2 launched in 2004. Updates over the years have attempted to bring in changes, from set effects, special attacks, and most recently absorption and health boosts, but these have been minor and unsubstantial in the overall scheme of things. Over the years, much of the older equipment has become outdated, obsolete, and as a result: Unused. So with the Evolution of Combat update, Jagex is overhauling both player equipment, abilities, and mobs to bring RuneScape’s combat system into 2012.

The combat level system has been reworked to sport a level cap of 200 over the current 138. Likewise, the mobs you find around the world have been given the same treatment, altering their combat level to more accurately portray their power. The combat level change comes with a drawback, however, as creatures that are far lower level than you (30+) will give reduced experience, or no experience at all. Thankfully this experience reduction does not transfer to slayer tasks.

Health is now wildly different than it was under the old system. HP has been exponentially increased to the point where, at later levels, your health can extend well over ten thousand. Your maximum health is now determined by a combination of constitution level, the health boost of the armor you are wearing, and any other temporary boosts offered through in-game activities. To reflect this change, food has also had a drastic makeover to dynamically alter its healing properties based on your constitution level. To keep the system balanced, however, lower level players will find that high level food scales down to offer a more appropriate healing for their level.

If you have any familiarity with MMOs, the new RuneScape system should come as a very familiar game. Abilities are activated by pressing their corresponding buttons or clicking on the ability bar/book, and encompass everything from instant damage, damage over time, area of effect, etc. The defense abilities, for instance, are dedicated to preventing and offsetting damage, while the constitution book is more based in recovering health. Regardless of your choice of combat style (Melee, Ranged, Magic), just about the same options are available for the picking, while defensive abilities are more universal.

New Vs Old

I’m going to use the word overwhelming again to describe coming into this new update as a decently high level player. If you have ever played an MMO beta that allowed you to create a max-level character, you’ll know the feeling. Rather than enjoying the smooth ride that would have been leveling up, I instead found myself spending well over an hour comparing stats, weapon requirements, effects, etc. Perhaps it would have been better to start anew, but I had neither the time nor patience to endure RuneScape’s long grind to level.

Right now, the Evolution of Combat has a lot of work ahead of it. Currently combat is far too heavily reliant on the use of the ability bar, a change which the community has not reacted positively to. In response, Jagex has promised that future updates to the beta will put less focus on button mashing the ability bar. Additionally, a new feature which lowers the experience gained for creatures much lower level than the player’s current combat level is being tweaked, and possibly removed in a future update.

Planetside 2 Beta Test Is A Beta Test, Not A Free Demo

Planetside 2 is still some ways off, but that doesn’t mean players can’t take part in the beta test. If you’ve been following Sony Online Entertainment for the past few months, you’ll know that Planetside players and those who purchased PC Gamer or went to the booth at E3 will have priority access to the Planetside 2 beta. Matt Higby appeared on the Planetside Universe forums to announce that external testing will kick off sometime this week, and that players will be let in as they are needed.

However, Higby also reminded the community that this is indeed a beta test, not a free game demo.

Beta testing is a critically important part of our development cycle on this project, we may be asking you to only play on tanks for a play session, or only play aircraft. We are doing true beta testing, not just a game demo and we implore those of you who are invited to understand and respect that. Things will break, the server will be unavailable sometimes, we will cancel scheduled tests when we find something that breaks before the test starts. All of this will help us make a better final game.

With more and more MMO developers using their betas as little more than publicity stunts, it is a breath of fresh air to see someone using them for their intended purpose: testing. Planetside 2 launches in the future.

Getting A Beta Perspective: Evolution of Combat [RuneScape]

Assuming you aren’t already in the beta, I’ve thrown together a quick video showcasing some of the new combat abilities in the Evolution of Combat beta. If you are a current member, you can beta test the Evolution of Combat update by logging in on the appropriate weekend. Otherwise, if you were sent a beta invitation by Jagex, you can log in regardless of the weekend events.

I will have a full written preview in the next couple of days.

Raptr Rewards: Claim Mists of Pandaria Beta Keys

*Note: Since I’ve received numerous comments in regard to this and the other Raptr articles, I would like to point out that this is not a sponsored article. MMO Fallout does not accept offers for sponsored articles.*

We here at MMO Fallout love Raptr. If you haven’t heard of it, Raptr is a service similar to Xfire which tracks your games, achievements, time played, and more. As you play games and earn achievements, you rank up in comparison to your fellow gamers, and this is where Raptr leads the pack: Every so often, Raptr offers some great rewards for the simple act of ranking up. These range from in-game items to full games, and coupons to buy games. On the downside, the promotions are quantity and time limited, so you’ll need to be fast to earn them.

The latest deal to hit Raptr soon is a promotion for World of Warcraft. Starting later this week, players who are ranked “Experienced” (top 60%) or above in World of Warcraft will be able to claim a Mists of Pandaria beta key. There are only five thousand keys to be claimed, and they are guaranteed to be gone within just a few hours of the promotion starting.

On another fine note, this giveaway is available in all regions except for China and Korea. Sorry! Beta keys are redeemed through Battle.net.

MMO Fallout will be showcasing more Raptr rewards as they appear.

Getting a Beta Perspective: The Secret World

The Secret World releases on in just a few weeks on July 3rd, and I had yet another opportunity to take a look at the beta this weekend. As you already know from our previous preview, The Secret World is an action-oriented game that plays somewhere between the button mashing of a World of Warcraft game and the more tactical location-oriented button pressing of Funcom’s other title, Age of Conan.

This time around I got my hands on the Dragon faction, a faction out of Tokyo who believe in order through chaos. The opening, however unfortunate, is the exact same as for the Templar: Long, drawn out, and boring. Luckily, it can also be skipped and some of the poor voice actors who appeared in previous beta weekends appear to have been replaced.

Foremost, we need to talk about quests. Quests are, and hold with me here, interesting and engaging. Unlike your other MMOs, you don’t pick up quests by wandering into a hub and nabbing everything in sight. In fact, you can’t. There are hard limits that allow you to only take a very small number of quests simultaneously. Every citizen of Kingsmouth and beyond is unique with their own personality. The presentation readily makes up for the much smaller number of quests available.

While there are a good amount of kill x quests, there are many more that require thought and deduction, offering little or no help on the mini-map. For instance, one of the first quests in Kingsmouth has you talking to survivors to learn more about the fog. It doesn’t tell you who to talk to or even where you should go to talk to them, that is left up to your investigatory skills. Other quests will send you on your way with a vague idea or general area, but no specific pinpoint on your map telling you where to go. Turning in quests is as easy as reporting in via your cell phone.

Perhaps what sets The Secret World apart from other MMOs in this regard is that the game has no levels. Since players are less inclined to try to rush toward end-game, since there really is none, they might feel better sitting back and enjoying the cutscenes and presentation of the quests. When I played The Old Republic, I found myself quickly bored with side-quests. The cinematics did little to numb the pain of quest grinding. In The Secret World, quests are long and spiraling and can regularly contain twenty separate parts.

Keep your thinking caps on, folks. For every brainless killing quest in The Secret World, there are plenty more that will strain your mind and put your investigatory skills to the test. Of course many players will simply have a browser open or beg in chat for answers (the latter being incredibly obnoxious), but there is a sense of accomplishment when you finally figure out the answer.

For example, another quest has you entering the house of a doctor to access the log files on his computer. Your only hint is a photograph that shows fireworks and a hint on the computer about the “song of the seasons.” The answer requires some knowledge of classical music, and I won’t spoil it here. I almost have to question if The Secret World will lose some appeal with its crowd because if you don’t have good deduction skills (or knowledge of classical music), you will probably just wind up looking the answers up online, and that will become annoying after a while.

Crafting in The Secret World is very similar to Minecraft, where you build gear by placing the building blocks in the correct pattern on a grid. Unfortunately, at least in my humble opinion, crafting is still very difficult without reading outside sources and guides for help. In fact there is a crafting guide on the Secret World main page that does an amazing job of explaining the ins and outs of weapon creation.

Combat, as I mentioned before, is a mixture of strategy without going as far as the intricate systems of other games. You will mostly be building energy to pull off attacks that use up said energy, and in the meantime many of the mobs have attacks that need to be dodged. There is a certain level of strategy required in combat, as you have limited space in your active and passive skill section to fill.

We’ll see how the next beta goes. Until then, I still haven’t burnt myself out of The Secret World. The more I play, the more engrossing that the game becomes. Player vs player combat was still absent from the beta but will appear next time.
