Jagex Announces RuneScape For Mobile Devices

Jagex has officially announced the death of productivity today, as the company revealed plans to bring its two editions of RuneScape to mobile platforms, allowing millions of players to mine coal from the comfort of wherever they feel like. In a press release sent out today, the RuneScape developer revealed that both Old School and standard RuneScape will hit iOS and Android platforms, with Old School coming first during the winter months and RuneScape to follow later on.

Both versions will be cross platform, allowing you to continue where you left off on the PC. COO Phil Mansell commented that Jagex is quite excited to bring a much requested feature to the community.

“We believe in taking our games to wherever our players want them; recent player surveys showed an overwhelming 90% of active players and 64% of former players telling us of their very high intent-to-play on mobile. Our innovative approach to mobile is also evidence of our ambitions in the mobile sector, and a further indication of our investment in extending the RuneScape franchise to additional devices and territories.”

Players can head over to the official website and sign up to beta test the release.

Doctor Strange is The Latest Update For Marvel Heroes

dr-s_1

Marvel Heroes tends to excel even among some of the bigger MMOs out there thanks to its tendency to constantly update and upgrade itself. This September we wrote about its biggest system update ever, which effectively constituted a total overhaul of the game. As with other branches of the Marvel entertainment empire, the folks behind Marvel Heroes appear to be fully aware that by recycling and/or revamping content based on the same basic heroes and settings they can continue keep their fans interested.

The game also has something of a built-in advantage in that it’s still the largest and most sophisticated ensemble video game to have come out since the dawn of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Gamers are interested in seeing crowds of Marvel characters in the same place, and there are only a few ways to do so across a huge spectrum of gaming. One of the first opportunities in this regard is a game some may not even know about! Casino Source lists a plethora of games and features offered by several online gaming sites, and includes mention of an Avengers slot machine. Further research shows this is a clever little arcade, and one of many to utilize a Marvel license to make slot reels more interesting. It’s entirely film-based, featuring all the main characters from the 2012 movie and giving gamers a nice chance to enjoy them all in one place.

That’s one of the smaller examples. And between that and Marvel Heroes, there are a few mobile apps with large casts of characters, as well as the LEGO-based video games where plenty of Marvel heroes and villains are present. But even among these titles nothing comes close to the amount of characters offered in Marvel Heroes. This is what keeps it out in front as probably the best Marvel video game you can find these days—and what separates it from other strong MMO options with less recognizable content.

And part of maintaining this reputation and status as the primary game for exploring lots of beloved comic characters is keeping those characters updated and interesting. For instance, if the creators of Marvel Heroes had simply plopped Iron Man into the MMO years ago and never touched him again, he’d have gotten old for players by now, even as one of the most important characters. Instead, the Marvel Heroes team regularly changes not only the game itself but the characters within it by providing new costumes, new abilities, and more.

They’ve recently done it again with a new update celebrating the release of Doctor Strange in theaters. Entertainment Weekly explained the update in detail, discussing new costume options for Strange (including his outfits from the film as well as a special comic book costume for those who logged in at a particular time). But this time, Marvel Heroes went a step beyond the ordinary image update and also built in some new gameplay options in the spirit of the film. For instance, the character of Mordo is now available as a team-up ally, not just for players controlling Strange but for any of the 59 playable characters in the game.

All in all it’s a pretty exciting update given how beloved the Doctor Strange movie already seems to be among fans. But it’s also just the latest example of what has helped to keep Marvel Heroes out in front of the competition for the best Marvel video game on the market.

Free to Play Drew $2.8 Billion In 2013

loadsamoney_2286530b

Super Data Research is a group that provides market intelligence in the online, digital, and mobile games industry. The numbers for 2013 have been released, detailing the estimated sales for mobile, free to play, and subscription based titles. Free to play was dominated by Crossfire and League of Legends, bringing in a combination of nearly $1.6 billion.

Social games dropped 21% over last year, with the US hitting an average of $50 per paying user spent. Free to play games brought in $2.8 billion, an increase in total revenue despite a decrease in monthly active user count. Pay to play, on the other hand, brought in $1.1 billion in 2013, down nearly 20% from 2012.

Unsurprisingly, the top free to play earnings chart was dominated by the usual titles: World of Tanks, League of Legends, Lineage, World of Warcraft, The Old Republic, and Crossfire.

RuneScape Coming To Tablets This Year

chrome 2013-04-19 11-34-47-16

RuneScape has some pretty massive updates coming this year, from two skills to an overhauled interface, the move to HTML5 as well as Jagex’s continued pledge to weekly content additions. In the past, Jagex has talked about the trouble of bringing RuneScape to consoles, particularly that Sony and Microsoft refuse to allow players to be on the same servers with their cross-console counterparts. Since then, Jagex has shifted focus mainly toward getting RuneScape on mobile platforms, and in a statement from Mark Gerhard, we will be seeing that sooner than we thought:

“We’re working insanely hard to make sure it’s ready for Q4 this year on tablets,” says Gerhard. “I think that’s a risk in that there’s a lot of unknowns, there’s a lot of R&D going on, and there’s still some tech questions, but right now the team is laser-focused on RuneScape 3.”

World of Warcraft Mobile App Now Free For All

Good news, World of Warcrafters, your game just became a little bit freer. As a convenience service, Blizzard launched the World of Warcraft remote. This service allows players to connect to the auction house remotely, chat with their guild, review prices, and bid on items even if their character is not at an auction house. Up until now, this service cost about $3 a month on top of your regular Warcraft subscription. As announced today, Blizzard has made all of the features of WoW Remote available for free.

Starting today, all of the features that were previously part of the optional World of Warcraft Remote subscription service are now available for free to all World of Warcraft subscribers.

Players who had already been paying for WoW Remote have received a thank you note, as well as 7 free days of game time and a non-combat pet.

Mark Jacobs Back From The Dead

Mark Jacobs made a name for himself here at MMO Fallout, particularly his quote regarding the launch of an MMO and its success being determined by whether or not the developer could be seen adding servers post-launch. Jacobs famously departed from Mythic Entertainment, and much like Richard Garriot following his departure from NCSoft, fell off the face of the earth in terms of future projects or developments.

Well Jacobs is back and, like countless before him, has formed his own company to divert from the standard corporate environment. Jacobs has formed City State Entertainment, with the goal of creating games for tablets, social media, and mobile demographics. Or as hardcore gamers will call it, Jacobs recognized the market potential in churning out FarmVille clones, games that require little effort to churn out a large profit via microtransactions. Or as a business major would call it, Jacobs will roll in cash for a fraction of the effort put into his previous projects. Jacobs says not to worry, however, as the company has no plans on becoming the next Zynga, and instead will form their own IP that they hope to translate to other medium.

City State Entertainment’s first title is set to release in Q4 2011. The company formed back in March and constitutes a number of ex-Mythic employees. MMO Fallout will be continuing coverage as more information on the first title is revealed.

Tibia ME: The WoW of Mobile MMOs

In the world of PC MMOs, ten thousand subscribers is around the lines of Asheron’s Call, Pirates of the Caribbean Online, and Planetside. For a large company, the number can mean imminent cancellation of a title, as it no longer becomes profitable to develop for, let alone run the servers. Others wing it, limping on with what they have, determined to please those who have stayed loyal, and possibly turn around the trend.
