Month in Review: October Edition

October was a month of expansions, layoffs, and delays. We saw a developer get their game pulled off of Steam after one of the staffers tweeted expletives and a death threat at Valve’s Gabe Newell. Arenanet caused a furor in the community by updating the gem trading tool to be less user friendly, and then responded to player complaints by going on the offensive and calling the posters unconstructive ranters. Gaming for Good raised $20 million for charity, and Playstation Plus increased its prices in several territories.

There is plenty more than happened this month, but this is just a rundown of some highlights from MMO Fallout.

RuneScape October Updates Detailed

scapefix

Jagex has unveiled the October update list for RuneScape. As part of the regular weekly updates, players will be able to enjoy the much anticipated ironman modes, a new mini-game, and extra tweaks to existing content. The month will spin off with a Halloween themed event and quest, and players will be able to view the Runefest stream on October 11th.

  • Ironman mode: no trade, no cooperative minigames, no treasure hunter, no lootshare, no gifts. Can you make it through RuneScape completely on your own? Go even further with hardcore ironman mode, featuring permanent death.
  • Smarter familiars: Combat familiars will join in a fight immediately, along with multiple other updates to the Summoning system.
  • Drop tables: Ghosts and beasts will see their drop table reworked for better loot.
  • Halloween event: Help the grim reaper himself deal with otherworldly issues.
  • Divination mini-game: Guthix’s hidden rune cache.
  • Treasure Hunter and Solomon Store updates: New cash shop promotions.
  • Runefest: Jagex’s convention, taking place on October 11th.

Path of Exile Exits Beta Mode October 23rd

PathOfExile_Act3_2

Path of Exile is finally ready to shed off its skin of being in fake-beta mode (no wipes, open cash shop) with an official launch on October 23rd. Alongside its official release, Path of Exile will also be coming to everyone’s favorite digital download location: uPlay. Actually it will be launching on Steam, but uPlay is your favorite store, right? The launch of Path of Exile will also bring with it the release of the Scion, the seventh class to be made available. Unlike her fellow exiled souls, the Scion isn’t just a character you can jump in and play with. In fact, you can’t even choose her as a class until you find her out in the world. The Scion is the first in a line of prestige classes and will be more difficult to play than the others.

Players will also enjoy an addition to the game’s main story, as well as new zones and expansion on PvP and guild functionality. You can read more at Massively’s lengthy preview.
