Deadman Adds Attack Priority, Separate Your Victims

deadman2

Yesterday’s update to Old School brought in some much needed, and popularly requested, changes to Deadman Mode, the recently released hardcore game mode for RuneScape. Players can now opt to separate how the game prioritizes targets, making it possible to navigate crowded areas without accidentally attacking another player. The update will come in handy in banks and guarded towns where a simple misclick can result in heavy losses.

The update also changes how looting on death works, with killers receiving the most valuable bank key from their victim rather than the oldest. Bank keys are dropped on death and allow the killer to steal twenty eight of the player’s most valuable item stacks from their bank. You can read the entire changelog at the link below.

MMOments: Deadman Is DarkScape Plus Punishment

deadman

Deadman Mode is DarkScape plus punishment, a statement that should be instantly endearing to anyone who tried out the RS3 mode and found it too accommodating to rushers and griefers. If you’re looking for Old School RuneScape with more rogue-like features, this is the place to be. If you’re not willing to lose a lot, and I do mean a lot, whenever you die, well there are other versions of RuneScape available to you.

It’s interesting to think of Deadman Mode as something that is hardcore in theory, not so much in practice. On paper, the game sounds devastating: Lose your inventory plus 28 of your most valuable stacks of items in the bank, plus 50% experience in all of your unprotected skills. And it is, death in Deadman is punishing in a way that only a masochist can love. But that, ultimately, is what seems to be preventing the game from becoming a grief-fest.

In DarkScape, a player with a decent stock of weapons can go around harassing players to no end and not end up risking anything. Griefing in Deadman means being willing to lose everything, and while I have seen a few players already throwing major tantrums and trying to harass other players, they quickly found themselves unequipped and powerless. Also unlike in DarkScape, it takes 30 minutes for a skull to disappear and players do not receive a skull when attacking a skull’d player. The entire world is open combat (3-126) and guards are level 1337. This makes attacking another player a massive risk, you basically become a target for EVERYONE who will kill you without a second thought.

deadman2

To help you along, Deadman offers accelerated progression in the form of five times the usual amount of experience. What does this mean? At least in the early levels, the only thing getting in the way of your leveling will be the fact that you’re clicking through level up messages too often. Players are also able to store ten non-stackable, tradeable, items in a keepsake box that will remain safe if someone kills you and steals your stuff. You can’t store your cash, but you can store important items.

We’ll have to see how well Jagex can moderate the game, what with the company doubling down on its policy of not allowing mule accounts. There is also no grand exchange, making the accelerated progression all the more important because it will be easier to mass produce equipment or farm bosses sooner.

As with DarkScape, Deadman will change over time based on player feedback and (since this is Old School) anything approved by the community. Right now the community is voting in approval of changing non-skulled experience loss from 50% to 25%, as well as hitpoint insurance that will allow players to buy a minimum hitpoint level and the ability to separate left-click attacks on players and npcs. Currently up for vote but not approved (so far) are changes to team capes, the removal of the wilderness ditch, and reducing the skull timer.

So far, Deadman is turning out to be exactly what people wanted from DarkScape, not to mention being set in Old School. I hope to keep covering this game for a long time to come.

Both RuneScapes Receive More Exchange Slots

e4lv0hA

RuneScape players of all stripes can enjoy the luxury of more Grand Exchange slots this week. The Grand Exchange is RuneScape’s answer to traditional MMO auction houses, allowing players to place both buy and sell orders with others on any server. Up until now, players have been limited to six slots for members and two for free players.

As of this update, members will have access to eight Grand Exchange slots with free players getting access to three. The update will be reflected on the RuneScape companion app where players can also buy and sell items directly from their banks.

In a change from the norm, this update will go live in both RuneScape 3 and Old School.

Old School Deadman Introduces Survival PvP

scapesold

Jagex has unveiled the latest game mode for Old School RuneScape, dubbed Deadman. In Deadman mode, the entire world is open pvp except for certain safe zones. By killing other players in the world, you are given the opportunity to raid their bank for one inventory (28 slots) worth of items. On the other hand, if you are killed that means the possibility of losing your best stuff in addition to that which you have banked. Dying also means losing half of your experience.

The good news is that Deadman will also carry a 5x experience boost, as well as the ability to protect up to five skills and pay to insure items.

Deadman mode will have its own hiscores so you can see how good you are, don’t forget though, you can go down the hiscores as well as up them. You will also be able to track the total amount of times you have been killed, how many people you have killed and the highest score you have reached.

There is no set release date for Deadman mode, however Jagex assures that it will not come out until the issue with denial of service attacks is fixed.

Old School Votes No On Low Level, Yes On High Level Content

scapesold

The latest Old School RuneScape poll closes in just a couple of days, but the results are clear and the community has spoken. In the last two polls, players were asked about content priorities and quality of life additions, and the results might surprise you.

More than 60% of players responded that low level player-vs-monster content was “not important,” while 78% considered mid-level content to be important and 83% responded that high-level content was important. Players responded similarly to skilling content priorities, with 53% labeling low-level content as unimportant, 81% deeming mid-level content important, and 88% voting high-level content important. Survey statistics also placed a priority on solo content and quality of life improvements.

The previous poll is massive, 37 questions long, with players approving updates such as experience trackers and numerous updates to the slayer system, while rejecting ideas such as using bonds to pay for character name changes and runefest tickets. Notably, players voted to revert maple logs back to their old graphic, which had been changed in response to item scamming.

You can find both of the polls at the links below.

Old School RuneScape Goes Hardcore With Summer Tournament

scapesold

RuneScape has never been a name in the competitive gaming scene, but Jagex is hoping to change this with a tournament pitting Old School’s top clans against one another. Set to take place over three days from the 24th to the 26th of July, eight teams of five players will fight in three separate competitions. The event is meant to highlight coming updates to Old School, including slayer bosses, pvp modes, and more.

“This summer, we can’t wait to adapt Old School RuneScape for the eSports community and watch teams battle their way to victory in this inaugural $10,000 competitive tournament,” said Mathew Kemp, product manager on the game. “We’re also looking forward to seeing how players tackle the unrelenting challenge of Deadman Mode later in the summer, as well as seeing how they shape up against the two new slayer boss monsters.”

Both Old School and RuneScape 3 are in the middle of a summer of updates, with players in the latter presently embroiled in a month-long world event. Stay tuned for more details.

Old School Resizable Mode Passes With 95%

scapesold

Old School RuneScape’s latest poll doesn’t finish for another couple of days, but the figures are pretty much locked in. Chief among the long list of questions is whether or not players would like to see a resizable mode added. 95% of respondents (over 45 thousand) said yes, with a toggle to turn the feature on and off.

Also currently on the approval list are shared slayer tasks, Zulrah drops, new spell animations, achievement diary rewards, buffs to certain equipment, changes to teleports, left-click smith option on anvils, and more. A couple of questions did not pass community approval, including changes to the Fountain of Rune, an Armadyl male helmet, the ability to gain multiple bear heads, and changes to npcs in low level wilderness.

Over on RuneScape 3’s side, players voted on larger but less frequent updates, with weekly bug fixes and “ninja fix” micro-updates in between. Abyssal Demons won the poll on which slayer monster should receive rare, elite spawns, and the Seren and the Elves quest was the most popular suggestion from the Runelabs March poll.

Top: Can’t Miss Old School Exclusive Content

scapesold

Old School RuneScape, or Oldscape, or ’07Scape as some have taken to calling it, has become a lot more than just an imprint of RuneScape as it was in 2007. Since its launch two years ago, Old School has ventured off in its own direction, with content developed exclusively for this version.

So in no particular order, here is a list of the top exclusive content.

1. Exclusive Bosses/Drops

As development transitioned from simple bug fixes, tweaks, and interface updates, to larger content updates, Old School has seen the introduction of several exclusive bosses. Several of the bosses, like Scorpia, reside in the wilderness where other players are a threat. Others, like the Cave Kraken, require the player to be on a slayer task to kill. Some are just plain weird. Regardless, almost all of the bosses something worth killing them over, be it a powerful weapon or a modifier to existing items.

The most recent boss to be developed for Old School is Zulrah, a solo-only snake creature.

2. Motherlode Mine

The Motherlode Mine is a must visit for players seeking mining experience and easy cash. Located in the Falador mine, players go around mining pay-dirt which is processed in the center of the area. In return, the pay-dirt is converted randomly into coal (most common), gold (less common), as well as mithril, adamant, and rune at higher levels (least common). In addition to ore, the player also randomly receives gold nuggets.

The nuggets can be traded in for a prospector outfit which boosts mining experience by a small percentage. Gold nuggets can also be used to purchase a coal bag and a gem bag, which hold a substantial amount of their respective items.

3. Agility Rooftop Courses

Training agility in Old School RuneScape is necessary if you don’t want to be walking constantly, and the training process is dreadful. Thankfully Jagex implemented a user-created suggestion for new agility courses, located on the roofs of various cities. To keep the player semi-conscious as they grind through agility, marks of grace randomly drop on the play-field and can be picked up to buy the graceful outfit.

The graceful outfit decreases the player’s weight, and additional marks of grace can be used to buy reagents for stamina potions.

4. Looting Bag

One of the more interesting items in Old School. The Looting Bag is a sack offering 28 additional inventory spaces, with a few stipulations on when and where it can be used. Designed specifically for player vs player combat, items can only be put inside the bag while inside the wilderness, and can only be withdrawn at the bank interface. The looting bag does not contribute to player weight, however everything in it is dropped upon death.

5. PvP Worlds

An old relic from 2001-era RuneScape. PvP worlds allow player vs player combat virtually anywhere except for designated safe zones like banks. There are two servers designated as PvP on Old School, and if you only use specific worlds or always use the suggested server, you may not even know that they exist. They offer the opportunity for all out warfare of the highest honor.

Or you can stick around and loot the corpses, like your old Uncle Omali.

Old School Community Approves Grand Exchange

aOxzALy

The Old School community has officially approved the implementation of a grand exchange auction house. The poll, which received over seventy two thousand votes, was approved with 76% and will be tweaked in another upcoming poll to decide just how the feature will function.

Players also approved dragon daggers, an increase in bank slots, and other small tweaks. The only two options to not get approved were a fee for items dropped at Zulrah and the option for filtered chat to remove text above players heads.

As always, Old School RuneScape polls require 75% approval to be added into the game.
