Perfect World Scoping Out Warframe Developer

dojoduel

Perfect World Entertainment is in talks to acquire Digital Extremes, developers of the popular Warframe shooter. Nothing concrete has been determined at this point, as Perfect World conducts a due diligence investigation into the affairs of Digital Extremes. Digital Extremes has not commented on the impending buyout due to legal reasons:

You may have read something about the business development side of Digital Extremes and it may have you concerned. For legal reasons, we can’t disclose specifics but if you know the history of Warframe you’d know that we are intent on having Warframe’s design remain in the hands of Digital Extremes. Yes, opportunities will arise for us but the game itself is and will remain a labor of love.

More information to come as this story develops.

Perfect World Entertainment Posts Strong Growth

nw_screenshot_032913_DevilMonster_006

Perfect World Entertainment has posted their most recent quarterly income, showing a strong growth in the first quarter of 2014 despite lowered promotional activity. Revenue for the international publisher amounted to $124 million, down 2.5% from the previous quarter but going along overall with a 44% annual growth. The mobile sector of Perfect World Entertainment grew from 10% of overall revenue to 15% last quarter, thanks in part to the 3D mobile RPG Fantasy of the Immortals.

The publisher is set to increase revenues thanks to their deal to publish Dota 2 and Neverwinter in China, both of which are expected to launch this year. Neverwinter is also expanding several titles in its library to more territories, including the Portuguese version of Neverwinter which launched in Brazil earlier this year. Revenue for the second quarter is expected to rise around five percent, thanks to upcoming launches in China.

Do you have a great idea for a costume? Want to see that costume available in Champions Online for others to enjoy? Cryptic Studios has announced a costume design contest where one winner will see their creation available for purchase within the Champions Online cash shop.

Throughout the next few weeks players can submit their costume design, consisting of a 1) visual component, and 2) a written description. Don’t worry if you’re not an artist, as long as we have something visually to go with, anything will work. Players will post their entries on the forums, and we’ll choose our favorites to feature. Once the submission period ends, we’ll select five finalists and post them for the community to vote on.

The winner will also receive 3000 Zen ($30 value) as well as four copies of the costume to hand out to friends. Five runner-ups will receive a smaller dividend of prizes including Zen and exclusive action figures. The contest runs from today up until April 21st, with the winner announced on April 28th.

Today’s MMOrning Shot comes to us from Neverwinter, where traveling across a bridge built from what appears to be a giant pillar has left me with some second thoughts. In fact, I’ll wait here until the engineers in Protector’s Enclave develop a flying machine, or sturdy handrailing, or both.

Check out MMOrning Shots every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

Perfect World Opens Console Division

Neverwinter_Screenshot_JeweloftheNorth_012513_jpeg2

Those of you who own a Playstation 4 or follow MMOs are likely already aware of the free to play MMOs that are either already available or are coming soon on the system. Perfect World Entertainment currently offers Blacklight Retribution on the console, and recently announced that it is opening a division of the company solely for the development of console titles. In a press release put out today by Perfect World Entertainment, the company did not detail which titles would be brought to current and next-gen systems, but described “current and future games.” Could we see Neverwinter on consoles? Perhaps.

Perfect World’s CEO Alan Chen had the following to say:

“Perfect World Entertainment has long been the leader in free-to-play PC titles. Bringing our titles to consoles is a natural progression for us, and we can’t wait to set a new standard for console MMORPGs and other genres.”

More information is set to come in 2014.

Lessons From 2013 #13: Until We Say It's Over

champs

You have to hand it to Cryptic, the company just won’t give up whether you want them to or not. Champions Online launched way back in 2009 and while the game was pretty fun it suffered from the effects of being the first game on a new engine. Systems weren’t fleshed out, the game is still pretty clunky, and the system feels bogged down by all of the new features that Cryptic has piled on over the years. Rather than leaving the game in the dust, Cryptic Studios announced earlier this year that they are opening Cryptic North, a brand new studio primarily made up of ex-Flying Lab Software employees. The studio has one goal, to improve Champions Online and allow the game to fully utilize the current Cryptic Engine platform.

Everything’s been quiet on the western front, so we have to assume that the team is busy plucking away. Hopefully we will hear more about Champions 2.0 in 2014.
