DC Universe and Planetside 2 Coming To PS4

planetside2image2

Sony Online Entertainment is working hard to ensure that the PlayStation 4 is that console of choice for next generation MMO gaming. With DC Universe Online already available on the PlayStation 3, it was only a matter of time before Sony announced the manner in which the game would come to the PS4. Well, your wait is over. Sony has confirmed that not only will DC Universe Online be making the move over to next gen consoles, but that Planetside 2 will be coming to the system as well.

There hasn’t been any mention in the videos as to how server structure will work, but given precedent it is likely that Sony will segregate PS4 DC Universe players or integrate them into the Playstation 3 servers, and that PS4 Planetside 2 users will be on their own segregated servers from PC gamers.

More on this as it appears, you can find the two reveal videos at the IGN link below.

Taco Tuesday: How Will Planetside Manage Cheaters?

00025934-photo-planetside-core-combat

Last year I asked John Smedley if Planetside would be shutting down with Planetside 2 releasing, since Planetside was already dead in the water in terms of population. The response I received was that Sony would rather seek options including transforming Planetside into the free to play model before they shut the servers down, and that there would be more details as to where things were going in 2013. Just a day or so ago, Sony Online Entertainment threw a block grant of six months of game time in Planetside for Planetside 2 players. John Smedley also noted on Twitter:

This also gives us more time to make it f2p. So enjoy starting tmw late morning. And yes I’m sure we will miss flag some people.

Even though I knew that Sony preferred free to play to shutting the game down outright, my reaction to the announcement is still a sound “why?” I understand why Sony would want to take that road, since by their own admission no one plays Planetside anymore and therefore anything is better than nothing. On the other hand, players like myself are fully aware of why Planetside doesn’t have a trial system: because hackers were abusing it and mass-creating accounts. So when Planetside goes free to play, it’s hardly unrealistic to assume that the hackers will simply return in droves to ruin the experience once again.

Will Planetside become a den of aimbots, exploits, and hackers? At first, most assuredly. Afterward, who can say? Part of me wants to say that Sony will address the problem of mass-hacking in Planetside because otherwise the investment required to take the game free to play wouldn’t be worth it. A game like Planetside that is fully player vs player will see its population turn right around and leave if the game is infested with hackers. The hope, of course, is that Planetside will generate enough revenue after the transition that Sony can afford to have some full time staffers on hand to update the systems to battle cheaters at a software level while simultaneously having staff in-game to track down and ban cheaters by hand.

And again, this all comes down to how prepared Sony is to deal with the cheaters who will no doubt show up once the doors open.

Planetside 2 Update Bringing Lattice System

hv7nMe0

Ask any Planetside player who made the transition to Planetside 2 what their biggest gripe is, and in all likelihood you will hear about the lack of a lattice system. In Planetside, bases and outposts are connected to each other through nodes, where those further into enemy territory cannot be captured until those at the forward lines are. When Planetside 2 launched without this system in place, players criticized the game for having a lack of objectives or direction, with fights breaking out randomly and players taking advantage of the large map to take over undefended bases.

Those gamers will be happy to hear that the upcoming Update 9, coming this week, will bring with it the much-anticipated lattice system. Players will now be funneled down a corridor system of outposts, with smaller outposts having two to three other bases connected to them and larger bases generally having three to five. The idea is to consolidate fighting to certain areas of the map, making for larger battles and giving defenders a better idea of where to go next. With the new corridor system, it will also be possible to cut off supplies to enemy factions with more tactical precision.

The update is being implemented in a test phase, with player feedback used to implement further changes to base connections, map layout, etc. You can read the full list of details at the link below.

MMOrning Shots: Original Crisis

dc_scr_DLC7_Quantum_TemporalVortex_02

Today’s MMOrning Shot comes from Sony Online Entertainment and showcases DC Universe Online’s upcoming DLC Origin Crisis. Players will be tasked with battling through time and alternate realities with Lex Luthor and Superman with the goal of preserving or altering the origins of certain heroes and villains. Origin Crisis also introduces a new powerset, Quantum, allowing the player to manipulate time and gravity itself.

MMOrning Shots is a (somewhat) daily line of screenshots from various MMOs. Most are taken in-house or come to us in press releases, but if you would like your screenshot featured, send it over to contact[at]mmofallout[dot]com with the subject “MMorning Shots.”

Storybricks Collaborating On Everquest Next

storybricks

Remember Storybricks? The last we had heard, the game Kingdom of Default had been cancelled so that the AI structuring technology could be properly developed and used on other video games. We were told that several projects were in development, however nothing specific could be offered at the time. Well buckle your seatbelts, because the Storybricks team has put out an email explaining that they are collaborating with Sony Online Entertainment to bring the Storybricks AI platform to Everquest Next.

After several months of working together with Sony Online, we can finally reveal that we are collaborating on EverQuest Next. EQN is “the biggest sandbox ever designed” and we are extremely happy to be working on the most innovative MMORPG under development. This is just a tiny announcement as we can’t give any specifics about what we are doing on EQN yet.  But we want to thank all our supporters for your patience and let you know that we are doing remarkable things.

More details to come.

MMOrning Shots:

The_Agency_logo

In hindsight, The Agency probably would have done better than Sony Online Entertainment expected had they allowed development to continue and perhaps even complete. For those who don’t remember this title, The Agency was Sony’s take on an unlicensed James Bond MMO. Players would take on instanced missions that would allow them to go in guns blazing or to choose the more stealthy route and drop some poison in their target’s drink.

Unfortunately The Agency was simply a casualty of downsizing, although hopefully Sony will keep the property in mind for when Everquest Next makes them a boatload of dosh.

MMOrning Shots: Dragon's Prophet

Today’s MMOrning Shot comes from Sony Online Entertainment and Runewaker, for the upcoming MMO Dragon’s Prophet. Players can capture, train, and ride their own dragons, and if this screenshot has anything to say, there are also towns and large pointless steering wheels? Imagine if that thing broke and fell off, you’d have a few dozen people dead! Dragon’s Prophet needs and equivalent of OSHA.

Vanguard Merging Down To One Server

vanguard

Generally when an MMO hits that point where it has merged down to its last server, you can bet that the game is either one step away from the chopping block at worst, or will remain in maintenance mode for the rest of its life at best. Sadly this is exactly what Vanguard players are experiencing as Sony has announced that the Halgar and Telon servers will be merging as of April 4th. The servers will be down for twenty four hours, after which the Halgar server will remain online until the end of business on April 9th. All characters above level 10, plus those below level 10 which have logged in since October 3rd, 2012, and before the April 3rd transfer, will be moved over to Telon.

Halgar characters will also be reimbursed for the cost of their houses, however they will have to find new housing when their characters transfer over. For more details, click the link below to see the transfer FAQ.

MMOrning Shots: Everquest 14th Anniversary

Anniversary_Big_Gnomes

Today’s MMOrning shot comes from Everquest, in celebration of the game’s fourteenth anniversary. Yes, in two more years Everquest will be of legal driving age, and then presumably will be able to pick up the pizza you ordered through /pizza in-game.
