[Column] NCSoft, Misconceptions And Frequently Asked

WildStar64 2014-05-08 13-12-45-60

The kind of activity I’m seeing among the Wildstar community is pretty similar to those of other MMOs when they were either in the process of being shut down, or at heavily speculated risk of being shut down. So none of what I’m about to discuss is of any surprise to me, and I don’t want people thinking that I’m just singling out the Wildstar community for behaving in such a manner. Thank you.

First of all, you can read my analysis of NCSoft’s first quarter report at MMORPG.com. I’m no trained expert in finance, but I’ve been doing these quarterly reports for five years, and in the months that I’m not regurgitating income and revenues, I’m doing research and chatting with real investment bankers. So I have at least a good grasp on what I’m talking about and the charts the present are all mine, so you know I’ve actually read them.

The unfortunate side effect of this being a somewhat complicated topic is that articles like this usually end up with a lot of gotcha questions from fans and “haters” alike, statements you know are wrong but can’t really refute with the proper level of confidence.

I decided to compile a few of the most common things I see concerning quarterly reports, particularly for this one.

  • The graph shows box sales, not total revenue.

Incorrect. The figure reported by NCSoft is total revenue per game, from box sales to subscriptions and cash shop purchases. No, this isn’t directly stated on the quarterly report sheet, but it is discussed in more detail over the conference call. Also, just consider this from a logical point of view. There are games on this list that don’t exist in a boxed form anymore, in any region. Sales for titles like Aion and Lineage II would be zilch if the figure only counted box sales.

  • But my guild is growing, the game must be growing too!

A nice sentiment, but anecdotal and ultimately meaningless, not to mention demonstrably false given we know for a fact that Wildstar’s sales are dropping. Also consider how small the game’s population would need to be in order for one guild’s numbers to be indicative of the overall population.

  • Who cares what the revenue is as long as the game is profitable?

You should, at least fans of the game should. While some developers might be happy with just profitable, it doesn’t take an expert to know that NCSoft is not that kind of developer. If NCSoft was happy with a game being somewhat profitable, we’d still be playing City of Heroes.

  • Your sources are unaudited and therefore inaccurate.

Half true. The figures provided are not audited, meaning they are in their form as NCSoft has submitted them. While it is possible that a mistake was made and the numbers are wrong, you would need some hard evidence to prove why the numbers should be doubted.

Discussing Business Models Now Banned on Wildstar Subreddit

WildStar64 2014-05-08 13-12-45-60

With NCSoft’s latest quarterly report coming up, speculation is rising once again on the possibility of Wildstar either going free to play or buy to play. The Wildstar subreddit, which we should point out is run by fans and not NCSoft, is getting ahead of the game by banning any discussion of f2p/b2p until hard evidence or an official announcement can be procured.

Unless a Carbine Employee, or Moderator here announces any business model changes to WildStar, there is no longer a reason to continue trying to post such discussions, as they are creating a lot of unrest in the community.

NCSoft’s next quarterly release should be coming out this week, hopefully alongside some news on Wildstar’s future. Wildstar’s earnings in the last quarter of 2014 were about $5 million, a sharp 65% drop quarter over quarter.

Wildstar Bundles “Mystery Box” With New Copies

WSB_Snarfle_003

Carbine Studios is running a promotion with Wildstar: Buy a copy of the game and receive a “mystery box” code, which will grant one of three items: A mount (pictured above), a hoverboard, and a costume set, plus a title for collecting all three.

For a limited time, when you buy a standard-edition copy of WildStar in the physical box, you also get one of these three awesome items. Got duplicate items? No problem! You can trade them with your friends, sell them on the auction house, or just keep them to yourself.

Unfortunately for current players, the codes are only given if you redeem the game after April 15th, and only the standard edition boxed copy (digital codes and steel box deluxe is not included). The pets can then be traded on the auction house, gifted to others, or applied as a character-bound item.

Wildstar Recalls Point Toward Impending Changes

WildStar64 2014-05-08 13-17-37-21

EB Games and JB Hi-Fi have been ordered to recall all copies of Wildstar from shelves in Australia, increasing the likelihood that the game is in the process of either changing its subscription model or shutting down entirely. As of this publishing. Wildstar is still available for purchase from the official website, as well as at game stores internationally.

While this is speculation at best until NCSoft/Carbine Studios make an official announcement, there is precedent. Copies of The Elder Scrolls Online were recalled shortly before the game’s transition to buy to play was announced, as well as retiring its six month subscription package.

Carbine Studios Details Contracts

ws_2015_03_contracts_02

Wildstar’s next update, Invasion: Nexus, is on its way to clients everywhere soon. As part of the update, Carbine Studios is working on introducing contracts, daily quests that players can partake in at level 50 that are designed to be completed in a short amount of time. The goal of contracts, according to Carbine, is to “enable players to make steady progress toward powerful gear and give them even more reasons to stay and play on Nexus.”

Contracts are divided into three difficulty levels and two categories (PvE and PvP) with players able to complete as many of the easiest contracts as they’d like. Contracts reward points, prestige, gear, and glory, with extra bonuses as the player accumulates more points.

WildStar64 2014-05-08 13-12-45-60

Carbine Studios has posted a preview of updates to come in 2015. While Wildstar was recognized last year for its soundtrack and combat system, there is no denying that the game is in need of improvement. Product director Mike Donatelli has detailed plans for the first half of 2015, promising:

We will invest in, enhance, and grow this game.

Donatelli has promised that the team will listen to player feedback to reduce grind, revamp rewards, and introduce new solo and group content. You can find the entire list of updates planned for the first half of the year at the link below.

NCWest Layoffs Inbound Across All Departments

WildStar64 2014-05-08 13-17-37-21

NCSoft has confirmed a round of layoffs at its western operations, affecting all of its studios outside of ArenaNet. The layoffs come as a result of “restructuring of key operations within NC West,” as the developer pushes towards mobile and tablet gaming, as well as emerging technologies. Polygon has cited an unnamed source stating that over sixty members of the Carbine Studios team were laid off.

The statement by NCSoft:

Today we announced a restructuring of key operations within NC West. As a result of this restructuring, we are implementing staff reductions across our Western operations with the exclusion of ArenaNet. While decisions like this are always hard, they are necessary as we begin the implementation of a new strategy designed to strengthen our footing as a leader in global entertainment.

Moving forward, we will continue to focus on our core development capabilities and the intellectual properties (WildStar, Aion, Lineage, and Guild Wars franchises) that have made NCSOFT what it is today. However, we are looking to move into new business segments like mobile and tablet games as well as explore emerging technologies.

Again, the decision to reduce staff was not an easy one, and we sincerely wish everyone well in their next endeavors.

Wildstar Merger Nukes Low Level Inactive Characters

WildStar64 2014-05-08 13-17-37-21

Carbine Studios is set to launch the Wildstar megaservers this week, on Wednesday October 15th. Players will be grouped into one of four servers, based on their physical location (US and EU) and server type (PvE or PvP). Due to the complicated nature of the merger, Carbine Studios is expecting a downtime of twelve to twenty four hours, which will be compensated in the form of thirty Boom-Boxes and an extra day of game time. To avoid naming issues, players will be required to create unique surnames. Guilds with conflicting names will hand priority over to the oldest guild, with the newer one being forced to change its name.

As part of the update, characters under level 3 that are inactive (not logged in within 30 days of the merger) will be deleted.
