After years of floundering.
After years of diminishing returns, gross negligence, and disappointing performance, ArcheAge has finally given up the ghost and announced its sunset. In the west at least.
The termination notice was delivered earlier today on the official Steam channel;
After discussing the performance of ArcheAge with XL Games at length, we have concluded that we’re no longer able to provide the MMORPG we envisioned. The declining number of active players means the game’s content is no longer accessible in the way it used to be, and the experience of it is different from what was originally intended. In light of this, we’ve made the difficult decision to terminate the live service of ArcheAge in Europe and North America.
The good news is that ArcheAge servers will remain online until June 27. The better news is that there are several private servers for ArcheAge that probably haven’t been mismanaged into insolvency quite yet and aren’t stuffed out the neck with hackers and excessive monetization.
Longtime viewers will be aware that ArcheAge’s history has had its share of controversies, with the game going through several publishers. From Trion Worlds committing fraud through the patron subscription, the embarrassing mishandling of hackers and bots, and the forking and subsequent reabsorbing of ArcheAge Unlimited, some MMO gamers might be happier just to see the game finally go away.
The sequel to ArcheAge meanwhile, ArcheAge 2, continues to remain in development hell as the title continues to fail to hit release windows.
