Derek Smart Announces Line of Defense For UE5

Being rebuilt from scratch-ish.

Derek Smart is back, and he’s talking about Line of Defense. A game we pretty much assumed was dead given the last blog post on the website wouldn’t be all that familiar with Covid.

An MMO shooter that’s been long in development, Smart notes that with the full version of Unreal Engine 5 being out, he has rebooted development from scratch and will be releasing it on said engine.

Though I have been working through some other pet projects which actually pay the bills, I have now decided to reboot the project from scratch, and rebuild it with UE5.

Mostly from scratch.

Instead, we’re going to start from scratch, while only retaining the engine-agnostic custom code (e.g. the Wide Span Global tech framework). This basically means rebuilding the game from design docs, game docs, and having most – if not all – of the 2D/3D art and environment assets revised using the far more powerful UE5 suite of tools (including AI enabled middleware).

Line of Defense will be built with the help of a third party team and development is expected to take 12-18 months.

For this, as I did with the LoD Tactics game back in 2015 when I hired a third-party team, I will again be hiring a third-party dev team to assist with this. I am currently in discussions with various teams, and I will provide more info as that plan progresses.

From start to finish, I expect it to take about 12-18 months.

MMO Fallout will follow up when more news hits in 2026.
