John Smedley Defends Curt Schilling

smedley

Those of you who read MMO Fallout know that I have quite a lot of respect for SOE’s John Smedley. The guy isn’t perfect and no one would doubt that there are plenty of mistakes made in Sony’s past, but the guy has a tendency to spell it out as it is and be as transparent as his corporate overlords will allow him to be. The company keeps their games going long after they are commercially viable, and even after they were no longer profitable.

Over the past few days, Smedley has taken to Twitter to defend 38 Studios and Curt Schilling, stating that Schilling’s “only crime was believing in his own ability to will things to be better,” adding that “he busted his ass to get funding.” He then goes on to state that Sony Online Entertainment was approached by 38 Studios for funding, but did not jump on board because the game was deemed too expensive and risky. He went on to say that the fact that no other company was willing to get on board should have been the first warning sign to Rhode Island not to go through with the deal. Public funds, says Smedley, should never go to back something as risky as an online game.

Rhode Island is set to vote today on encouraging out of court settlements against Schilling and those who drafted the loan.

Defiance Unveils Gunslinger Trials DLC

Defiance 2013-04-03 15-51-14-86

Trion Worlds revealed Defiance’s next DLC pack: Gunslinger Trials, and if you haven’t finished the campaign or season 1 and don’t want to see any spoilers, skip the next paragraph. Set for release in March on PC, PS3, and Xbox360, Gunslinger Trials will include three new mission lines, nine new cooperative arenas, and will also open up the Thorn Liro arena to groups of players rather than the original solo.

Now on to the story. Gunslinger Trials picks up where the main campaign in Defiance ended, where we learned that Von Bach had survived his fall from the Golden Gate Bridge. The Earth Republic on the other hand continues expanding its terrestrial forces.

These stories are told with eleven new cutscenes and over three hundred new lines of dialog. Ark hunters will uncover a conspiracy to steal EGO implants, the revival of the Biodyne project, and even the rise of a new political power in the Earth Republic.

Players who take part will be rewarded with, what else, new guns to shoot things with, each tailored to the fighting style of its creator. More information to come in the weeks ahead.

MMOments: 7th Legion DLC Impressions

2014-02-09_00001

Now generally whenever I write an impressions piece about a game or DLC, I take a few days to get a feeling for the content and make sure that I’ve played it long enough to get a good feel for how everything works. In the case of Defiance’s third DLC pack, the 7th Legion, I spent much of that time wondering where the content was. After a while, I got pretty bored of trying to figure out where I needed to go, and went back to working on completing Defiance’s Season 1 achievements. I got stuck on the first cooperative map, Liberate the Lost, and after several runs through the instance, I can only assume that the achievement for completing the map without dying isn’t working. Still. Since last April.

2014-02-09_00005

And that’s pretty much been my experience with 7th Legion, finding something better to do and eventually logging off while I wait for the real content. You see, the DLC doesn’t bring in any new missions or things to actually care about who the 7th Legion are or why they are in San Francisco. The 7th Legion doesn’t have any real presence, you don’t really become a member of the group as the previews suggested, and I’m not entirely sure what their goal is. A unified earth? Isn’t that what I’ve been doing this whole time?

So the meat of 7th Legion’s content is in these new events called Incursions. To start off the problems, I could probably make a trip to the DMV to get my license renewed in less time than it takes to wait for an incursion to pop up, and the DMV by my house is staffed by corpses. The incursion itself is a series of the same events that you come across randomly in the world, based around a central foe, like the Volge or the afflicted zombies. After traveling around the circle and popping the event pimples as they appear, eventually it all culminates in a siege. All in all, incursions are about an hour to an hour and a half of recycled content, except you have to do a lot of them if you want any reward.

Also included is access to the 7th Legion faction and the obligatory faction grind which, in this case, has slowed to a near halt thanks to its reliance on those sporadic incursions. There is a set of 7th Legion guns which seem to be specialized in one category or another. You might come across a shotgun that holds more shells, or a sniper that reloads faster, but if you’ve made any headway into the game, you probably won’t be dropping your arsenal for these. There are seven new outfits to find in the 7th Legion lockboxes, purchased with reputation points obtained through incursions.

2014-02-10_00002

The 7th Legion is wholly disappointing, and not because of the $10 price tag or how most of the content is recycled events and reskinned weapons. It is because the game’s official DLC packs have become smaller in scope and content than the free updates that were being pushed out when the television show was still running through its first season. Updates like the Volge and Afflicted brought in new enemies, new types of events and emergencies, brand new weapons with serious changes, storylines that despite being short gave a minimal introduction to the events, and more.

And yes, 7th Legion once again continues Defiance’s legacy of mediocre QA testing and bug fixing. Back in November, I wrote that the constant denial of progression thanks to fatal game breaking bugs that go unfixed for months was enough to stop me from buying any further DLC, had I not already purchased the season pass at launch. With the launch of 7th Legion, said bugs are back. Forget the fact that even before the DLC launched, Defiance went for some time with a bug that caused a majority of the gun varieties to simply not drop. In this pack, you get the luxury of waiting around for an incursion to start only for one of the events to break and bring the incursion to a halt.

There are two DLC packs left in the first season pass and, at this rate, we’ll be lucky if Defiance still has anyone working on it afterward to create a season 2.

Darkfall's Return Promo Caveat

Darkfall01

Aventurine has launched a brand new promotion to bring in new and returning Darkfall players. Starting February 5th and heading into the 13th, Aventurine has discounted the cost of the client by 75%, as well as 45% off of a six month subscription. Existing players with accounts in good standing will find that they are able to log in and play for free through the same period. The catch? You’ll have to contact support to reactivate your character if you’ve been gone for a while.

Please Note: Regarding the Return to Darkfall players: If your account has been inactive for over 3 months, your character is stored. In order to restore the character you need to contact support by submitting a support ticket and they will do it for you as quickly as possible.

Hopefully Aventurine’s support will be able to get to those characters in a timely manner.

Transformers MOTA Set For Summer Launch

transformers

Jagex’s Transformers Online, or “Not RuneScape” as I have referred to it in the past, has admittedly struggled in its development. Originally announced in 2011 for a 2012 release date, Jagex announced at the back end of 2012 that Transformers Online would be completely repurposed as a MOBA-style game and released in 2013. Why? Because Transformers don’t bake bread. As you might expect, this ground-up rebuild meant that the game would not make its 2013 release either.

In a news post released yesterday, Jagex announced that Transformers Online is primed and ready for a Summer 2014 release.

So here’s the big news. We are 100% set to launch Transformers Universe this Summer, and will be progressively inviting an ever-widening portion of the BETA community to enjoy the game before opening it to the rest of the world this summer!

The internal release date set for Transformers Universe is June, as stated by a Jagex employee on the official forums.

Broadsword Online Reviving Mythic's MMOs

bs_log_brushed_plain

Ultima Online and Dark Age of Camelot players have reason to rejoice today, as both communities were notified that Broadsword Online Games will be taking over development of both titles. Founded by fourteen members of the Mythic Entertainment team, including Mythic co-founder Rob Denton, Broadsword Online was formed to take the development of both games off of EA’s hands. Broadsword is not an Electronic Arts studio, but rather is operating on behalf of EA for both MMOs.

There aren’t any details on who the rest of the team includes, although we can surmise that the skeleton crews on both games are likely among the staff.

MMOrning Shots: Take A Bath

water

Today’s MMOrning Shot comes from The Secret World. While going through missions that I had passed up, I once again found myself in the Innsmouth Academy. Now, I get the whole idea of blood splattered people adding to the horror element, but it wasn’t until a mission had me head upstairs to grab a file off of the Headmaster’s desk that I realized how disgusting this trio must smell, hiding in that office for all this time. Add to that the experiments in vaporizing familiars, and that wing of the school must smell like a combination of burnt flesh, stale blood, and body odor. And you know that girl doesn’t have access to a shower or change of clothing. My poor avatar.

The Secret World doesn’t need more weapon vendors, it needs an Old Spice and hand sanitizer salesman.

Biggest Update Yet Coming To The Old Republic

cathar

I suppose that “not as big as last year’s update” doesn’t have as much of a ring to it. Bioware has released the 2014 roadmap for The Old Republic, detailing some of the updates to come in the first half of the year. This month sees the full launch of the Galactic Starfighter digital expansion, which subscribers and preferred members already have access to. March will bring in a double experience weekend, and April will see several updates to the game’s flashpoints, operations, and more.

For June, Bioware has teased Update 2.8, described as the biggest update to this point.

  • And much more… this is going to be the biggest update up to this point – we will reveal more once we are a bit closer to June

More information to come soon.
