Virtually Everyone Possesses Duped Cash In DC Universe Online

DC Universe Online has a problem; An exploit allowed players to inject a gross amount of money into the game’s economy. How gross? According to Daybreak, trillions. Enough that virtually everyone in the game is now in possession of the fake cash, regardless of whether or not you’re aware of its origins. The cash has made its way through the economy and into so many player’s hands that Daybreak shut down trading cash and use of the broker while they figured out what to do about it.

The answer? Fix the exploit, ban the exploiters, and enforce a one-time “progressive tax” to fix the economy. You rich folks aren’t going to like this.

We have settled on six tax brackets for this one-time event, totaled at the ACCOUNT level, which are as follows:

  • Cash below $500,000,000 is not taxed at all.
  • Cash between 500,000,001 and 10,000,000,000 is taxed at 5%
  • Cash between 10,000,000,001 and 15,000,000,000 is taxed at 10%.
  • Cash between 15,000,000,001 and 20,000,000,000 is taxed at 20%.
  • Cash between 20,000,000,001 and 25,000,000,000 is taxed at 25%.
  • Cash above 25,000,000,001 is taxed at 100%.

Daybreak has admitted that the goal is not to fix the economy in one swoop, but to get rid of most of the cash that was introduced with the exploit. Their “look on the bright side” explanation is certainly something.

“We also want to maintain some of the scale of wealth legitimately present in the game. You may have less cash after this tax, but for the most part you will still have more than the people you had more than before, and less than the people you had less than before.”

On the plus side, if you had your investments wrapped up in items instead of cash, you’re pretty much safe from the number squash.

Try not to get spooked by MMOring Shots every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

DC Universe Adds Microtransactions

I’d love it if WordPress didn’t write my URL before I’ve finished writing the title for the post. DC Universe today launched its move into microtransactions. Right now the game only offers three items, with more on the way no doubt. The items are proto-bots offering convenient repair on the go, vault tickets offering access to the vault instance, and a pack of five vault tickets.

I’ll let you guys throw around the slippery slope theory on how this is the lead up to free to play and pay to win, and call Sony ‘$OE’ and John $medley.

Super Servers Sounds Better Than Server Merger

I have a new goal: Find the guy who writes Sony’s press releases, and hire him to the MMO Fallout team. In an announcement today on Sony’s website came the revelation of four “super servers,” to reduce queue times, delivered in a much more positive fashion than “we’re merging servers.”

We have heard your concerns about queue times on the servers. This game is about people playing and fighting together so we feel your pain. Sometime in the next month, we are going to test new technology to meld all of our US and European PC and PS3 servers into four Super-Servers, one for each platform in each region.

This news couldn’t have come at a worse time, what with Sony not only going through layoffs, but also the continued downtime of the PS3 DC Universe since the 20th.

This announcement takes me back to what I said in January:

Will this be one of the few MMOs whose population doesn’t crash one month after launch? I’m not holding my breath, but let’s hope for the best.

DC Universe is a fun game, but since launch I’ve had to question its long term viability. The leveling to end game is fast, and Sony really went off track in terms of the game’s social features.

Playstation Network User Data Compromised [UPDATE]

But you already knew this. In the ongoing Playstation Network saga, Sony has announced in today’s blog post that whoever breached the Playstation Network may have gained access to everything from names, addresses, emails, passwords, purchase history and more. Sony has since confirmed (since the publishing of this article) that credit card data was indeed encrypted, and is thus safe.

You can read the entire post here. There is still no ETA for the Playstation Network being brought back up.

New New DC Universe Online Servers!

Accept my servers before I flatten your face!

Pending litigation that I received for the sake of this joke, I am unable to quote a certain Arkmay Acobsjay, and his comment about servers being added after launch being somewhat related to the success of the product itself. Just last week, we saw the addition of one server on the PC and one on the PS3, adding in new player vs player servers. I did note that the addition of two servers shouldn’t be seen as a runaway success, as Aion did the exact same thing post launch, and you may recall the monstrous merger that the game went through a few months ago.

This week, on the other hand, even more servers are being added to mitigate load. The PS3 is receiving three new servers, and the PC is receiving one new server.

PS3:

  • Relentless (PvE) US
  • Justice For All (PvE) EU
  • Absolute Power (PvP) EU

PC:

  • Last Laugh (PvE) US

Reaction to DC Universe has been pretty positive, even on the MMORPG.com forums. Will this be one of the few MMOs whose population doesn’t crash one month after launch? I’m not holding my breath, but let’s hope for the best.

More on DC Universe as it appears.
