Trion: Hartsman Returns, Branch Closed

riftfae1x

It is Christmas time, right? Trion has welcomed back Scott Hartsman as CEO. Some of you may remember back in January that Hartsman resigned from his position as Executive Producer on Rift, which some speculated had to do with disagreements over the then-rumored plans to make Rift free-to-play. If the move was to try and secure a higher position at Trion, then it was a success.

With all good news comes bad, however. Trion has also confirmed to Massively that the company has shut down its San Diego branch, moving operations to the Redwood City Studio. Many of the staff from the San Diego studio are expected to make the transition over to Redwood City.

“As part of this transition, we are working hard to ensure that a number of great people will be making the move from San Diego to the Bay Area and continue their work at Trion,”

Now about ArcheAge…

Rift Tops Raptr's Charts For June

caas-most_played_june2013

Let me put my hard hat on real quick. Alright. Raptr is a desktop app similar to Xfire that we’ve featured here on MMO Fallout because it not only tracks your game time and achievements across your consoles, it also regularly gives free stuff at the cost of absolutely nothing. Thanks to a strong promotional effort between Raptr and Trion, Rift came out on top as the most played game of June, with a whopping 13% of the pie. World of Warcraft came in at #5 with three MMOs dropping out from last month’s list: Defiance, Neverwinter, and The Old Republic.

As far as PC games go, Guild Wars 2 ranked #7 with The Old Republic at #10, Neverwinter at #12, Star Trek Online at #14, Marvel Heroes at #17, and Microvolts at #18. Defiance showed up as #13 most played games on the Xbox 360.

MMOments In Gaming: This Vehicle Is Broken

The manufacturers of this hover car had the right idea when designing a vehicle that could still be driven even if flipped over.

Defiance And Rift Raptr Rewards

Defiance 2013-04-10 21-41-09-94

Here at MMO Fallout, we love Raptr for the fact that it is like an Xfire client that tracks game time, and gives us free stuff just for playing games. No surveys, no advertisements, no subscriptions, no deals, none of that stupid crap you get from other clients. It’s just a game developer looking for publicity, so they go to Raptr and say “hey, we want to give some stuff away.” That stuff can be anything from full games to in-game items, and is usually in-game items. The catch? To obtain most of the rewards, you have to have played a certain amount of game time with the Raptr client running. The Raptr client runs in the background, out of sight and out of mind, ticking your play hours.

Trion has a number of items available for Rift players, including a Tartagon mount, a two headed tortoise for players who reach hardcore status, a pet modeled after the Raptr mascot, and a helmet. For Defiance, the rewards aren’t going to be unlocked until July 3rd and include a starter pack (boosts and a lockbox), elite drifter pack (outfit), a Raptr-themed vehicle. Players can grab a 30% off coupon for Defiance starting the 20th if they are ranked dedicated or above in one of the following titles:

Assassin’s Creed III (PC)
BioShock Infinite (PC)
Blacklight Retribution (PC)
Borderlands 2 (PC)
Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition (PC)
Diablo III (PC)
Firefall (PC)
Guild Wars 2 (PC)
PlanetSide 2 (PC)
Rift (PC)
Star Wars: The Old Republic (PC)
Warframe (PC)
World of Warcraft (PC)

There is only a limited amount of these rewards (five thousand for the Defiance and three thousand for the Rift rewards) so nab them while you can. As always, MMO Fallout will try to get our hands on some codes which we will place on our Twitter feed. Follow @mmofallout for updates and codes.

MMOments In Gaming: Defiance’s Living World

Defiance 2013-04-10 21-58-21-04

I had a stunning revelation while playing Defiance yesterday: This game might have one of the more lively feeling worlds I have seen in a long time. Here is the story: A temporary event is currently running that tasks players with fighting off zombie sieges and the odd zombie emergency event in the road. Riding on my roller, I stopped by one such emergency only to find the area completely abandoned. Screaming and gunfire could be heard just over the nearby hill, beyond which I found zombies fighting a Raider event. It seems that the two stumbled upon each other, causing the afflicted to invade the Raider invasion.

Rather than intervene, I allowed the two groups to go back and forth, until the zombies won virtually unmatched and the Raiders were forced to retreat. I can only imagine what the Raider’s hostages were thinking, having already been kidnapped from their caravan, bound and gagged, only to have their day made even worse by an invasion of flesh eating zombies. Luckily for them, the zombies weren’t interested in hostages and once the last raider was killed off, moved on back to their own area.

But just imagine the chaos in Defiance if the afflicted zombified their victims, adding to their ranks and branching out kind of like an invasion event in Rift. Maybe I’m just wishing too much.

Defiance Updates Continues Plague Storyline

Defiance 2013-04-10 21-41-09-94

Defiance will be updated today to continue the plague storyline. A mysterious Irathi disease is quickly spreading, and the Ark Hunters have been tasked with tracking down a cure before it spreads too far. Players will take charge of finding the cure before it reaches the television town of Defiance, where June 17th’s episode will see the area in complete panic and distress over the oncoming storm. The update brings with it 8 new emergencies, a new game mode, 2 new pursuits, a data recorder, and a mission series that will run from June 10th to the 17th.

In the latest crossover event from Trion Worlds and Syfy, beginning on June 3rd, players will be challenged to eradicate the infection that is afflicting San Francisco’s residents and work through all new content to discover a cure in order to send it to the town of Defiance before the outbreak there gets any worse.

As with Defiance’s other television tie-in updates, today’s update is free of charge.

MMOrning Shots: Irathi Plague

mmorning

There is a sickness going around Defiance, and I’m not even talking about the Hellbug menace. Trion has launched a mini-event in Defiance that has players finding data recorders detailing a new Irathi-born disease that has spread to humans. The event is small, has no indication on when it will end, and may spiral into a larger story related to an upcoming episode of Defiance on Syfy or possibly just fizzle out and become nothing. Who knows? I certainly don’t. All I know is that I won’t be eating my pirogi in Shondu’s Consolate for a while.

MMOrning Shots is a (mostly) daily line of screenshots from various MMOs. Most are taken in-house or come to us in press releases, but if you would like your screenshot featured, send it over to contact[at]mmofallout[dot]com with the subject “MMorning Shots.”

Reports Of Trion Layoffs Grossly Exaggerated

Defiance 2013-04-10 21-41-09-94

Rumors of Trion’s demise have been greatly exaggerated. IGN found this out the hard way when their reports that Trion had laid off 80% of its work force, escorting staff from the premises as well as denying severance to several senior leaders due to undelivered services, turned out to be a complete farce.

The actual number of laid off employees has not been revealed, although Trion has confirmed during a stream that the Rift team was not affected. The Defiance team, on the other hand, has undergone a round of layoffs of the type expected by a recently launched game. Trion’s in-development games were reportedly not affected either.
