Codemasters Wants Some Well Deserved Hate

If you are a newcomer to Lord of the Rings Online, and live in Europe, chances are high that you are currently playing on one of Turbine’s US servers. When Turbine launched the US-based servers last week, they did so with foresight, preparation, and server queues. Lots and lots of server queues. Codemasters, on the other hand, opted to delay the launch to an unknown date, so they could get some kinks out of the system.

Naturally, players are annoyed, and Codemasters wants to validate your anger through an inbox/contest.

The community liaison officers will be your target/punch bag/stress ball and welcome you to throw things at us. The choice of what you throw and how you throw it is yours but you have to be creative: describe it in a text, record a video, draw something or take a funny screenshot – there is no limit to your imagination! You can even bake a custard pie and we will administer the confectionary as requested. The ten most creative and/or funny submissions will receive a Codemasters Goodie Bag and we will feature them on our May Contain Gamers community blog.

PS: Don’t poison the custard pie. Who could say no to a goodie bag? Vent your frustrations and get rewarded for it. Granted, it might have just been easier if Codemasters hadn’t delayed yet another Turbine F2P venture…just saying.

Final Fantasy XIV 360 Not Cancelled, Just Delayed Forever

If you check any gaming related website, electronics store, or wikipedia, you’ll find that Square Enix is set to release Final Fantasy XIV on the 30th of September for the PC, and sometime in March next year on the Playstation 3. What you won’t find, on the other hand, is a release date, or an acknowledgement of the Xbox360 version of Final Fantasy XIV, and Square Enix would like to rectify that.

In a recent interview with VG247, producer Hiromichi Tanaka stated that the 360 version of the upcoming Final Fantasy MMO is in fact not canned on the 360, but has rather been delayed and put on hold while talks continue with Microsoft. Going further into details, Tanaka explained that Xbox Live is virtually the only hurdle keeping Final Fantasy XIV from continuing development on the platform.

I’ve been pretty unrepentant in the past with my feelings towards Microsoft and have always backed up my philosophy that if you are a console gamer looking for an MMO, your best bet is to stick with a Playstation 3. The hurdles that the developers have been reaching with Microsoft are essentially set at Microsoft’s love of money, and their need to stick their fingers into everyone else’s cookie jar, leading to the point where a deal between Microsoft and the BBC to offer streaming BBC over Xbox Live (at no cost to Microsoft) was turned down because Microsoft couldn’t make any money off of it.

As much as I hate to play the pessimist, those who are waiting out on a 360 version of Final Fantasy XIV might as well wait in line behind those still hoping for a console edition of Champions Online, Age of Conan, and Star Trek Online, who are standing right over there with the folk waiting for Duke Nukem Forever and the rapture.

Good News Everyone! Aion Transfers Back On Schedule

I reported yesterday that the character transfer system, which was to follow the server mergers in Aion, was delayed due to an unseen issue that did not arise until literally the day of. In the post, NCsoft promised that they would provide 24 hour notice before the transfers went into motion again, and that players should be prepared for notice at any given time. There was no indication on how long the fix would take, and luckily it was barely a day, as the following post on Aion’s website states:

We have managed to correct the problem that was causing the transfers to fail and are ready to bring the servers down again to transfer all those that had queued prior to yesterday’s maintenance. If you queued prior to the 14th July your transfer will go through, there is no need to queue again, please make sure that your character meets the transfer requirements before the maintenance.

The servers will be taken down at 4am CEST for approximately three hours, after which the queue for character transfers will be reopened. Normal restrictions on transfers are still in effect, and players are required to read the restrictions if they would like to minimize item loss in the transition.

Character Transfer Services have been disabled while we troubleshoot technical issues that arose this morning.  You will not be able to initiate a character transfer during this time.  If you have already initiated a transfer for a character prior to the maintenance window, you will not have to repeat the process.  Your character transfer will already be queued when we re-enable transfer services.

NCSoft has promised to give players 24 hour notice, but cannot give any more detailed information as to how long the transfer services will be down. More on the Aion transfer service as it appears, hopefully I’ll be able to get you some news soon on this event which has turned into nothing but a pain in the backside for all parties involved.

Henrik Nystrom Speaks: No Mortal Online This Month


Oh Henrik...

I told you this weekend that Henrik Nystrom would be giving a special announcement on Monday in regards to the status of the game. Yes, it is fifteen minutes to Tuesday, but you can blame my busy schedule for this late news. Long story short, Mortal Online is not being shipped this month, in order to upgrade the issues with networking and desync.

As of now there is no release date for Mortal Online, which means don’t hold your breath for an April release either.

As you know we have been working hard to solve our desync issue within the game to have a proper release of Mortal Online. We have made some progress but we think we have hit the limits on the current version of the network solution we are using. We believed we had the solution before end of March but we now see that this is not possible at the moment therefore we have to postpone the release for another month. We have been working very hard day and night now for some years and finally started to see the goal and release, we just have to put another gear in before we are going to release Mortal Online. Thank you for your feedback and support that helped us to take this important decision.

Both the community and we here at Star Vault agree that we need to have the desync issue solved before we can release Mortal Online. We have decided to upgrade our network solution with Epic Games to improve the overall network structure.

We have already started the merge a week ago which means we are converting all our current features and content into the new structure, this will take some time for us to finish before we can test the result of this with your help in the open beta. We will also fly some of our programmers to the US where Epic Games are located to work within their team to get their fully support on our game and update of the network structure in an efficient way other than distance cooperation. This will improve the speed and quality of us going into the latest build of Unreal Engine and the network solution which should eliminate most of our current issues, both in performance and network wise. While our programmers work directly on the merge and some bug fixing our artists will continue to work on the world, and bring us a few new interest points to Nave. This also means we get the latest build of Unreal Engine which gives us the opportunity to evaluate SpeedTree 5.1 and some other interesting tools.

We will announce a final release date at a later time.

It’s a busy day today for MMOs. First off, those who preordered Fallen Earth will find that the headstart servers are now open for them to start roaming and utilizing those preorder bonuses before all the lazy people come in. Fallen Earth has been on my radar for quite some time now, not just because I was invited to the closed beta, but because it taught us a lot about false pretense. I’ll admit I was suckered into the idea that Fallen Earth would be an MMO take of Fallout 3, until I actually played the game and found that the two are different as day and night. Fallen Earth is a fully realized MMO set in a massive persistent world, with a unique system of crafting, leveling, and fighting. Those of you who did not preorder can dive into the live servers when the game fully launches on September 22nd, barring any future delays.

Secondly, an oldie comes back for a rejuvination. Today, Dungeons and Dragons Online goes fully free to play, alongside the newest expansion: Eberron Unlimited. The level cap has been raised to 20, and free players have access to most content, with a number of classes, items, and other features paid for through the game’s VIP system. Grab your 20 sided dice, get your party ready, and go deep into this title today! No doubt MMO Fallout will be focusing more on Dungeons and Dragons Online, what with the ongoing lawsuit between Developer Turbine and Publisher Atari.
