Bungie Apologizes For PR Mishap, Promises Change

Cayde-6_1410173955

Bungie is in the middle of dealing with a PR fallout this week, first from customer backlash over how Bungie handled the collector’s edition of the Taken King DLC, to an interview with Eurogamer in which the company has been accused of disrespecting its longtime customers. Luke Smith, creative director at Bungie, has apologized for his tone in the interview:

Reading my interview with Eurogamer and imagining it came from some random developer of a game I love – that random developer looks like an Asshat. But that Asshat was me – and those words rightfully anger you. I’m sorry. My words made it sound as if Bungie doesn’t care about their most loyal fans. We do care. We are listening. And we will make it right.

To compensate, customers who pick up the Taken King DLC will be able to grab the collector’s edition limited content for $20, which includes the 3 emotes, 3 armor shaders, and 3 exotic class items with xp boosts. Players who already have a light level 30 guardian, or if you’ve played through the Dark Below and House of Wolves packs, you’ll receive a Year One VIP shader, emblem, and sparrow.

Another blog post is coming today that should answer more questions.

MMOments: Defiance DLC #5

2014-05-06_00004

Arktech Revolution is the fifth and final DLC installment for Defiance’s first season pass, and one that I welcome with open arms. It’s been a month since this DLC launched and a few people speculated that the sudden lack of a review here at MMO Fallout was me signaling that I was done with the game after my previous reviews. This is not the case. As it stands, Arktech Revolution is more about quality of life improvements over all else, I wanted to be completely sure that I took enough time to fully digest what had changed to understand how it affects day to day gameplay.

First off, let me thank Trion Worlds for fixing what I consider to be the most poorly executed update in Defiance’s short history. Several DLC’s ago, Trion introduced stims and spikes, as well as consumable grenades to Defiance. The concept was great, you had stims that boosted power/defense/healing as well as spikes that granted an area of effect boost that restored ammo, increased damage, etc. The implementation left a lot to be desired, as replenishing your stockpile of stims/spikes was entirely dependent on either going to a merchant or hoping that the correct type was dropped. With Arktech Revolution, enemies drop generic refills for stims, spikes, and grenades that make it much harder to run out in the middle of an invasion.

It is also possible to gain experience on weapons that have already been mastered. This sounds like a small update, but it means a lot when you previously would have to decide in the middle of a battle whether to switch to a new weapon or continue on at the cost of not making any progress. The armor nodes are interesting, but I haven’t noticed much of an effect on the overall experience.

The boost to both the EGO level cap and enemy abilities has made the game very difficult for new players and veterans alike. Where the game was often times far too easy before, has now become difficult to the point of impossible in certain settings. For instance, I took part in a Volge invasion that rather quickly capped out at the highest difficulty and began spawning top-tier Volge mobs. Many of us couldn’t even make a dent in their armor, which isn’t so much difficult as it is frustrating when you have ten of them spawning in the same area.

Looking back, Defiance is an infinitely better game than it was when it launched one year ago. Ignoring the fact that the game can be purchased for pennies on the dollar nowadays, Defiance is set to go free to play next month on PC with the console versions to follow. The game still has many more improvements to make, like how the world feels so cramped with all of the events going on at any given time. According to forum posts, Trion plans on increasing the size of the game world following the introduction of free to play.

Overall, though, if you were to bottle up all of the paid features from the first five DLC packages and put them up for $30, would it be worth it? I’d like to say so. With the second season of Defiance coming this summer and more tie-in missions on their way, I’m looking forward to what Defiance has to offer for the future.

Arktech Revolution DLC Announced

DLC5Unveil_Blog

Trion Worlds has announced the fifth DLC pack for Defiance, Arktech Revolution, which seems to be aimed at improving quality of life features in the MMO shooter. Set for release this April, Arktech Revolution will see an increase to both the EGO rank cap and point cap, as well as the introduction of new perks to invest those extra points in. In addition to the increased level cap, players will also find that higher EGO rating makes a big difference on your abilities including damage, health, and shield functionality. To keep the game balanced, the population of NPCs are similarly seeing an overhaul with new abilities and designs. Events will scale dynamically based on the number of players present, with the promise that new players will not be left out.

Finally, some long awaited improvements to damage output and grenades. With DLC #5, weapon types will become more pronounced in their abilities, such as incendiary weapons being more effective against flesh or radiation being able to penetrate armor. There is also a new damage-mitigating buff called armor which does not recharge passively and must be recharged at an extraction point. And finally grenades, stims, and spikes will be receiving an overhaul to hopefully be less tedious to obtain. Enemies will now drop universal “charges” that refill specified items.

You can check out the entire announcement at the link below.

Defiance Unveils Gunslinger Trials DLC

Defiance 2013-04-03 15-51-14-86

Trion Worlds revealed Defiance’s next DLC pack: Gunslinger Trials, and if you haven’t finished the campaign or season 1 and don’t want to see any spoilers, skip the next paragraph. Set for release in March on PC, PS3, and Xbox360, Gunslinger Trials will include three new mission lines, nine new cooperative arenas, and will also open up the Thorn Liro arena to groups of players rather than the original solo.

Now on to the story. Gunslinger Trials picks up where the main campaign in Defiance ended, where we learned that Von Bach had survived his fall from the Golden Gate Bridge. The Earth Republic on the other hand continues expanding its terrestrial forces.

These stories are told with eleven new cutscenes and over three hundred new lines of dialog. Ark hunters will uncover a conspiracy to steal EGO implants, the revival of the Biodyne project, and even the rise of a new political power in the Earth Republic.

Players who take part will be rewarded with, what else, new guns to shoot things with, each tailored to the fighting style of its creator. More information to come in the weeks ahead.

Defiance Third DLC Coming February

Defiance 2013-04-10 22-06-47-55

Trion Worlds has announced the next set of DLC for Defiance will be coming this February. No details have been released other than the following snippet and the name of the DLC: The 7th Legion.

When the world fell apart, one group kept their courage. Guided by the teachings of the Code of Bushido, the soldiers of the 7th Legion marched across Canada gathering survivors as they went. From one outpost to another they marched until finally they found a city which did not fall: Manhattan. There, they made their stand against the darkness, and Commander Yoshida Hiro called an end to their long journey. Now they have come to Paradise. What dread news could this herald?

Impressions: Defiance Arkbreaker

2013-12-17_00007

I managed to get some time in playing through the Arkbreaker DLC for Defiance, and I came out less disappointed than the Castithan pack DLC. I had a hard time completing the first DLC arenas because the timers were randomly breaking at launch, and I believe still are to this day. The Arkbreaker DLC introduces a laundry list of new content, including stims, spikes, a new mission line, arkfall events, weapons, and more.

There are new consumables added into the game in the form of spikes and stims. The spikes are like totems from other MMOs, you stick them in the ground and they give area of effect buffs to you and your allies. Stims are injected and offer similar buffs. They are consumable and you can only have a maximum of five of each particular type at any given time. What I really like about these items is that Trion has made it so you can only have one of each type in your inventory. If you find any more of the same type, it replenishes your stack, and if you find a higher quality version of the same thing it will replace the lower quality version. So if I get a higher tier ammunition spike, it will replace the one I have on me now. This sounds limiting, and you are limited to ten of each spike, but it makes the inventory less cluttered.

2013-12-17_00013

The ability to favorite items and protect them from accidental salvage is a great addition, as is the inclusion of daily contract missions on the main map. The new Arkfalls are enclosed shooting galleries, there isn’t much to them outside of shooting a bunch of Volge and then fighting the Warmaster. The Warmaster itself is difficult, a giant tank with a lot of health. My group filled up the area and still couldn’t bring him down below 25% health before time ran out and he disappeared. Still managed to get a few decent weapons.

I am not impressed by Trion’s decision to make grenades consumable. Had they done this from the start, it probably wouldn’t be an issue, but they run out fast and are a pain to refill. Changing it this far into the game just feels like a step backward. Much like the first pack of DLC, I also can’t help but feel like there isn’t much to justify the price. Most of the content is available regardless of if you actually buy the DLC, and I can’t help but feel that the $40 I spent toward the season pass is going to waste. The world is as tiny as it ever was, even smaller since Trion split the map and threw in a loading screen. The company seems more dedicated to filling an already cramped world with more stuff, rather than taking the logical approach and expanding it as people have been requesting since launch.

As an update, Arkbreaker offers some nice content, but with most of it being given for free, it’s hard to justify spending the ten dollars.

Jagged Alliance Online's Steamy Success

jagged1

Jagged Alliance Online recently launched on Steam, and suffice to say the guys over at Cliffhanger Productions are very happy with the results. In a press release sent out today, Cliffhanger Productions noted that in the three weeks since its launch, Jagged Alliance Online has skyrocketed into the top five most popular DLC products on Steam, pulling ahead of some of the more recently launched MMOs. As a result, the developer has been forced to increase server capacity in order to contain the mass of new players. Wolfgang Duhr, member of the Board of Directors of publisher bitComposer, had some words of praise:

“We are really happy about the rapid success of Jagged Alliance Online and would like to congratulate the Cliffhanger team on the successful relaunch.”

Cliffhanger Productions recently finished a Kickstarter for their second MMO in development, Shadowrun Online.
