Virtually Everyone Possesses Duped Cash In DC Universe Online

DC Universe Online has a problem; An exploit allowed players to inject a gross amount of money into the game’s economy. How gross? According to Daybreak, trillions. Enough that virtually everyone in the game is now in possession of the fake cash, regardless of whether or not you’re aware of its origins. The cash has made its way through the economy and into so many player’s hands that Daybreak shut down trading cash and use of the broker while they figured out what to do about it.
The answer? Fix the exploit, ban the exploiters, and enforce a one-time “progressive tax” to fix the economy. You rich folks aren’t going to like this.
We have settled on six tax brackets for this one-time event, totaled at the ACCOUNT level, which are as follows:
- Cash below $500,000,000 is not taxed at all.
- Cash between 500,000,001 and 10,000,000,000 is taxed at 5%
- Cash between 10,000,000,001 and 15,000,000,000 is taxed at 10%.
- Cash between 15,000,000,001 and 20,000,000,000 is taxed at 20%.
- Cash between 20,000,000,001 and 25,000,000,000 is taxed at 25%.
- Cash above 25,000,000,001 is taxed at 100%.
Daybreak has admitted that the goal is not to fix the economy in one swoop, but to get rid of most of the cash that was introduced with the exploit. Their “look on the bright side” explanation is certainly something.
“We also want to maintain some of the scale of wealth legitimately present in the game. You may have less cash after this tax, but for the most part you will still have more than the people you had more than before, and less than the people you had less than before.”
On the plus side, if you had your investments wrapped up in items instead of cash, you’re pretty much safe from the number squash.

Neverwinter Continues Astral Diamond Changes
Perfect World’s continuing efforts to make Astral Diamonds more readily available to players, while heading off bots and zen farmers, has been ongoing for the past few months dating back to the initial changes to the Gateway tool in July. Still, the game is in need of improvement. As Perfect World agrees, Astral Diamonds take far too long to obtain in-game and prices for goods like companion upgrades are ridiculously steep.
In the latest dev blog post, executive producer Rob Overmeyer discusses how Neverwinter’s Astral Diamond problem will be addressed, primarily through boosting how much players can acquire and refine each day. Leadership changes to reduce botting resulted in the per player average of Astral Diamonds plummeting from 171,000 all the way down to 34,000, before further updates increased that amount to 60,000.
It turns out that managing economies is hard and complex. Dealing with two economies is even harder, but we are up for the challenge. There are several things that need to happen in the short term. We know players need ways to earn enough AD, and that AD vendor prices need to be in a place that makes sense. We want to make sure those things are true. Right now, we think it’s sometimes too hard to earn AD, and some of the prices are too high, so we’re making some changes. We’ll keep watching, and we’ll make more changes if needed.
The plan to introduce more legitimate Astral Diamonds to the economy involves a 50% bonus to AD earned through dungeons, skirmishes, PvP, and weekly quests. In addition, the cost of companions will be greatly reduced, as well as the price of upgrading them. You can read more about the update at the link below.

Jagex Rethinking RuneScape Bonus Experience Weekends

Bonus XP weekends may be on their way out in RuneScape. While well intended in nature, the events tend to play hell with the economy, with the prices of goods spiking from the time of announcement until the event, with prices of finished goods crashing afterward as players flood the market with millions of crafted items. Not that this means the end of bonus experience events. Jagex occasionally releases special items which boost xp in activities, which will likely fully replace the weekend events.
With an economy heavily focused around the manufacturing and selling of player-crafted goods, RuneScape sits on a different pedestal where a weekend event like the one Jagex has run for the past few years could be more detrimental than helpful. Only time will tell as to how Jagex will replace the current bonus weekend system.
Eve Online Players To Attempt Economic Bomb

Announcing your intention to blow up the economy, in any other online game, would probably be met with raised brows and perhaps a few suspensions depending on the developer. When the mantra of the developer is just as hardcore as that of its players, say CCP for example, the reaction might be closer to a kid with fireworks: they’re just interested in how big the explosion will be.
In fact, CCP thinks it will be “absolutely brilliant.” You may remember the CSM member who resigned from his position and was suspended from Eve last month for suggesting a coordinated attempt to harass an emotionally unstable person into suicide. Well, he is back, and tomorrow will lead “Burn Jita,” in an attempt to cripple the Eve economy.
Reportedly fourteen thousand Thrasher ships are prepared for an all out assault on Jita, Eve Online’s trade hub. Luckily, CCP had warning that the event would take place, and the developer has made sure to swap servers around so Jita can handle the imminent influx of players.
“We’ve said, okay, stick Jita on the big, scary server, and put all the surrounding systems on these other servers.”
And CCP isn’t just all for this, they find the idea of intervening appalling.
“The worst thing we could do is to stop it happening. It would be appalling for the game. It would be against everything we stand for.”
Get your popcorn and stock up on clones, we are in for a bumpy ride.
