Video: The RuneScape Tactical Nuke

Today’s video was created by Youtuber Gudi and provides quite the interesting experiment in Old School RuneScape. Gudi stacks low level accounts to create what he refers to as the tactical nuke capable of doing a lot of damage in an instant. The set up involves quite a lot of legwork and the use of multiple accounts, but the payoff is very entertaining to watch.

Gudi is an ex Jagex employee.

Old School RuneScape Suffers Major Technical Difficulties Over Weekend

(Update: Old School RuneScape underwent maintenance this morning that appears to have fixed the issue)

If you have tried to play Old School RuneScape this weekend, especially over mobile, odds are your experience has been less than desirable. Absolutely horrible more like.

Long story short, Old School RuneScape has been suffering issues causing the game to be completely unplayable for many people on mobile and the official client and Jagex has yet to figure out what is causing the problem or the million dollar question of how to fix it. The last update to an alert posted on December 7 notes that the issue is still being looked into, but as of midnight on December 9 the problem has yet to be fixed.

The issues are still actively being investigated and resolved. We’ve also edited the article to reflect the issues that some players are experiencing with the desktop client. We’re also aware of issues affecting some Old School RuneScape players when attempting to connect to the official Old School RuneScape game client. These players are experiencing long loading times, with ‘Loading configuration’, ‘Loading application resources’ and ‘Loading application’ all taking a long time. Our SysAdmin and our Game Engine teams are investigating and are working on resolving the issues as a matter of priority.

In addition to the connection problems, players who have been able to log in have reported major server lag with some servers suffering more than others.

Old School RuneScape Launches Twisted League

Get those peppercorns out, because it’s time to grind.

Jagex today has released the latest game mode for Old School RuneScape in the form of the Twisted League. Twisted League is a temporary game mode that throws players on an ironman character and locks them to the land of Kourend and Kebos (main world not accessible). Ironman of course means no trading, no picking up others drops, and no auction house. To assist players in this temporary league, base experience is increased by 5x and shops will carry more items and restock at an accelerated rate.

So what is the point of the League? As you complete tasks you gain points that can be used to unlock powerful buffs from a relic such as infinite run energy. Cosmetic items can be unlocked in the main game based on your performance in the league, and future leagues will have exclusive worlds that can be visited based on your performance in prior leagues. Otherwise, it’s all about the prestige.

For more information on Twisted League, check out the official website.

Jagex Hides AFK Magic Trainers From New Players

Jagex is very concerned with how new players take in their first few minutes in RuneScape, and they are kind of concerned regarding the impression players are getting from logging in and seeing the starting area full of players in high level armor fighting rats. Magic splashing is a widespread method of training the skill, as players figured out years ago that you could wear melee equipment with low enough magical accuracy that your attacks never actually hit. Since RuneScape gives a small amount of magic experience even when a spell fails to do damage, this has become a slow and expensive, but for many valid method of training their magic skill while doing something else.

Thankfully Jagex is not removing magic splashing, but the company announced with this today’s update that magic splashing will no longer reward experience within the area that players immediately spawn in following the tutorial, that being Lumbridge and the surrounding forest. The map area is very small, so there are plenty of other locations that players can set up in and AFK to their heart’s content.

Old School RuneScape Cans Partnership Poll After Overwhelming Disapproval

Jagex has thrown out a poll after only two days after Old School RuneScape players overwhelmingly rejected the company’s proposal for partnership-integrated items.

The poll went up on July 3 and contained over 20 questions asking players if they would approve of various items from emotes to skin colors and teleport animations being added in as partnership perks (such as RuneScape’s Twitch Prime items) with the items being released afterward to the general public, and the community answered with an overwhelming no. Old School RuneScape polls the vast majority of its content updates to the community. Each poll runs for one week and requires at least 75% approval in order to be added into the game.

For this poll, Jagex decided to cancel it after two days as virtually all of the questions had at least 70% disapproval.

Old School RuneScape Wins BAFTA Game Award

Old School RuneScape has been named EE Mobile Game of the Year at the 2019 BAFTA Games Awards. Since its launch on mobile in October 2018, Old School RuneScape has been downloaded and installed on 6.4 million devices. Jagex CEO Phil Mansell said:

“This is astounding recognition by our players of all the great work and effort invested in bringing Old School RuneScape to mobile and making it a great British success story, and we want to say thank you to everybody who voted for us – it is very, very humbling. Since we launched on mobile just a few months ago, we have seen players return to Old School in their droves, with nearly six and a half million installs, and a resurgence of membership over the Christmas and New Year period that broke all records for the franchise. We’re looking forward to bringing new adventures to Old School RuneScape over the coming years, as well launching RuneScape on mobile devices in the months ahead.”

RuneScape Celebrates 18th Birthday At All-Time High

RuneScape is officially 18 years old, old enough to vote and in many countries even drink, but Jagex today announced that its flagship title is entering adulthood at an all-time high. According to the Cambridge developer, RuneScape is enjoying its strongest year to date, with more than five million downloads on Old School RuneScape on iOS and Android since launch. In addition to this record, RuneScape is also enjoying the highest paid membership total over the Christmas period since 2008, while lifetime revenue for RuneScape surpassed $1 billion.

Jagex CEO Phil Mansell said:

“2018 was a fantastic year for our RuneScape games, which have truly come of age. The franchise has been growing consistently for five years, and we’ve seen a surge of further community growth with the move to mobile. Old School RuneScape’s successful mobile launch was made possible by our incredible team who’ve been able to make this classic game play smoothly in a mobile form-factor, and which allows players to enjoy the convenience of completely interoperable PC to mobile cross-play. This achievement showcases our living games philosophy; bringing deeply engaging community experiences to players wherever they are.”

Jagex has hired more than 100 new members to the team, while monthly active users have more than doubled over the year.
