Trion Removes Falling Damage

riftfae1x

When you have a game centered around exploration, taking a tumble off the side of a cliff can be, well, deadly. One criticism players have held with Rift is over the fact that their character’s bones are made out of crepe paper, as it is apparently rather easy to die from falling off of low heights. In response, Trion added this little note into hotfix #2 for patch 2.1 earlier this month:

Taking damage from falling should be slightly more survivable.

Oh patch notes, you are so silly. The “slightly” is a bit of an understatement, as it is impossible to die after leaping from off of a cliff (unless of course you fall into a pit of spikes or, say, a bag of vipers). Not everyone was entirely pleased with the response of removing fall damage, and Daglar from Rift posted on the forums to explain the update:

When we looked at falling damage, it wasn’t from the perspective of “Zomgz lets dumb down the game because people will fall and then quit” – it was “Will removing this make the game as a whole more enjoyable for the most amount of people, and does it fit into what RIFT is.”

Falling damage, much like the dodo, is gone for good in Rift.

The Old Republic Grandfathers In Character Locks

Bioware has launched patch 1.6.2, bringing with it all sorts of bug fixes, balance changes, and miscellaneous changes. Chief amongst the updates in the patch notes is the revelation that Bioware will now be enforcing character slot restrictions. Why now, after all this time? That’s not important. What is important is that free players are restricted to two characters per server, with preferred status players capped at six and subscribers capped at twelve. In a completely unrelated move to the newly enforced cap on character slots, players are now able to purchase character slots from the cartel market for 600 coins.

Here is where the situation becomes confusing. For subscribers and preferred status players who already had more than the default amount, you still have access to your characters, but you still have to buy that character slot if you want to extend your limit on that server. Still doesn’t make sense? Let me explain: Say you are a preferred status player with seven characters on a server prior to today’s update. Your seventh character isn’t locked, but if you want to create an eighth character you are going to have to purchase two character slots, the first to cover your seventh and the second to cover the eighth.

Vanguard Gets A Patch

Allow me to be the first to exclaim: Holy cow! If you don’t understand why Vanguard being patched warrants an article, you probably don’t follow Vanguard, and if you don’t follow Vanguard…Well I’ll let the community’s wrath be a surprise. So far, MMO Fallout is running on comments that Sony would like to take Vanguard to a free to play system, but that some key infrastructure must be put into place first (updates to the game, actual developers working on the title, etc).

The update added in today doesn’t do much apart from some bug fixes, but the overall message is that Sony does indeed still notice this red-headed step child. This will likely still not quell discussion surrounding John Smedley’s comment over their subscription service back in January:

The monthly subscription fee means players can expect a lot of new content from us. And I say a lot — I really mean that. This is something that we feel obligated to the players, because they are paying a monthly sub fee.

More on Vanguard as it appears.

Mortal Online: Now Where Did I Put That City?

Mortals Online

Mortal Online is a tricky little bugger. On one hand, if I write anything good about the company I am a paid shill. On the other hand, if I write anything unfortunate or bad about the game or even mildly associated with it, I stand to draw a lynch mob from the Mortal Online forums. So either way, I stand to wake up with the severed head of my Bioshock mini-figure in my bed with me tomorrow.

Today’s video is a humorous one, and comes from a player named Griefa (yes, I get it), who recorded Mortal Online post-patch, taking issue with a small problem, most notably that one of the game’s cities had been picked up and removed causing players to fall through the empty void.

The town has since been replaced, to my knowledge, and all is hunky-dory in the hood that is Mortal Online. Well, at least as far as the city being missing is concerned. The fix took a few days because the developers were off for the weekend.

Perhaps a test server would be in order?

Let No One Say Mythic Ignores the Community

Get my sharpie of +4 Intellect!

There are many things you can, and likely do, say about Mythic Entertainment and the MMO Warhammer Online, but one aspect you cannot criticize the company for is effort and a desire to please their community, even if they don’t always get it right. Not too long ago, Mythic announced the the 1.3.4 patch for Warhammer Online would streamline the scenario system, that ended up with plans to remove almost three quarters of the scenario maps. Reaction to the news was, shall I say, negative.

But, Mythic announced that they are going back to the drawing board as to how scenarios will be streamlined, and would like your input into the matter. The company has been watching both the North American and European forums and in-game feedback systems, and is taking as many thoughts as they can on the matter. There will still be a few of the inactive scenarios removed from the game, but not nearly as much as before.

If you currently play WAR, leave your feedback here (not here, in the link. Mythic likely doesn’t know this website exists). Players looking to get into WAR are always welcome to try out the unlimited trial, level one to ten free forever!

Fallen Earth LLC: Any Sleep?

Fallen Earth went into live mode on September 22nd, where the title had something of a rocky start. The first few weeks have brought on numerous bugs, server load issues, and recurring problems with the tutorial. Fallen Earth LLC hopes to put the past behind it with an upcoming patch that will address all of these problems.

To start at the top of the list, the new tutorial will allow an optional extension of 30 to 45 minutes, that will give players a more indepth look at the crafting, scavenging, combat, mount, and harvesting systems. Town events will also be given an update, and the patch is followed by eight pages of bug fixes. In addition, October will bring a Halloween event to Fallen Earth.

Forget whether or not Fallen Earth can handle the updates; One can only wonder as to the abuse that the coffee machine over at Fallen Earth LLC is taking.

WAR: The Newbie Reimagining

WAR_ss_may09-09

I’ve been struck by some of my viewers for giving WAR too much of a bad light on MMO Fallout. Apparently I am focusing too much on the negatives (Which is half of what this website was set up to do), but not enough on the positives. Low retention rate, massive server mergers, and the continuing issue of desolate areas, where doing certain RvR tiers or public quests is impossible due to the lack of other players present.

With the latest patch to hit the Warhammer Online public testing server, Mythic is looking to make the game easier not only for new players, but long time veterans as well. With this new patch, players will no longer start in the old starting areas. Instead, players will be thrown into a singular starting area, one for Chaos and one for Empire, allowing them to meet and greet, and to allow for easier group formation. New players will also notice that they have been automatically enrolled in a starting guild for each server, to allow them to meet other new players/alts, and form their own guilds off the bat. In addition, there is now a voice-over tutorial, and an improved in-game help manual.

Free Retcons for Everybody!

I’ve talked a lot about the launch day patch for Champions Online, how it changed the game in a very dramatic fashion, making previously viable combat sets now obsolete and unusable. Originally, Cryptic allowed users who created their account during the head start to have a free respec, resetting their powers and allowing them to start fresh.

A patch today launched that will give all Champions Online users a free respec who created their characters before the 10th. Right now, the free respec was bugged, and therefore left out of the patch. Players can still obtain this free respec, until the UI bug is fixed, by typing /character_usefreerespec
