[Community] The Sense of Accomplishment, or Buy Our Freakin Lockboxes

Electronic Arts may have won the award for most disliked and tone deaf comment on Reddit in the history of the platform. Those of you who follow Battlefront II are likely aware of the criticisms that the game has received in regards to its progression system, namely complaints that it shamelessly gates power behind random loot box drops that are also available for real money. The comment popped up in a thread titled “Seriously? I paid 80$ to have Vader locked?” The post took umbrage with the fact that Darth Vader, an iconic Battlefront character, is locked from use unless players do some extensive grinding to unlock him.

According to another Reddit thread using graphs and charts, it has been calculated that Battlefront 2 requires approximately 40 hours to unlock a single hero or villain, as the game doles out currency rewards based on time played rather than points earned. Alternately, of course, you can bypass this grind somewhat by plugging real money into the system and buying loot boxes.

In response to the complaint, a representative from EA’s customer support posted the following comment:

“The intent is to provide players with a sense of pride and accomplishment for unlocking different heroes.

As for cost, we selected initial values based upon data from the Open Beta and other adjustments made to milestone rewards before launch. Among other things, we’re looking at average per-player credit earn rates on a daily basis, and we’ll be making constant adjustments to ensure that players have challenges that are compelling, rewarding, and of course attainable via gameplay.

We appreciate the candid feedback, and the passion the community has put forth around the current topics here on Reddit, our forums and across numerous social media outlets.

Our team will continue to make changes and monitor community feedback and update everyone as soon and as often as we can.”

You heard it here first, Battlefront wants to provide you with a sense of pride and accomplishment, not frustrate you with an intentionally crippled progression system designed to deeply encourage loot box purchases. The comment currently stands deep in the red at negative 274 thousand votes in just 19 hours.

And now, please enjoy some of the better angry and snarky responses in said thread.

“If the unlock took maybe 2-4 hours that would be fine, but this is essentially saying “You don’t need to pay but if you don’t good luck””

“Locking iconic characters behind credit walls that will take dozens of hours to get one is just insane, especially when I am willing to bet you have tons of heroes planned which will be behind similar paywalls?”

“If I had a credit for every downvote you’ve gotten I could finally unlock Darth Vader!”

“More so how much do they expect the average gamer to play this game? To unlock 3 hero’s I would have to play 120 hours, there are few games I have played 100 hours and that goes for a majority of people, people will get bored long before that and move on to another game once the grind becomes too much.”

“And Vader costs 60k, it’s bizzare.”

“Isn’t that also 40 hours for 1 hero assuming you buy nothing else at all. The opportunity cost for missing out on everything while saving up for a single big ticket item is tremendous.”

“That’s fucking rich. Just be honest. The truth is you know very few people are going to sink a full work week into this game and you’re hoping that somebody is desperate enough to buy credits to unlock the character. It has nothing to do with providing a “sense of pride and accomplishment.” This is a flat-out lie and you know it. How naive do you think your player base is?”

[Overwatch] Torbjörn Is Getting Nerfed On Consoles

McCree_02

It’s conceivable that, over time, Overwatch will be a rather different game on PC and consoles. In response to a thread on Reddit, Blizzard director Jeff Kaplan confirmed that Overwatch hero Torbjörn will be on the receiving end of the nerf bat next month.

In an upcoming patch, we will reduce the damage done by Torbjörn’s turret by 30% on Xbox One and PS4. PC will remain unchanged.

The patch is expected to go live mid to late July.

[Less Massive] The Attack On Redditors Has Already Begun

pao1-e1426096043817-1940x1090

You can’t turn anywhere in the tech industry these days without running into Ellen Pao, now former CEO of Reddit. Pao came into the public scene in 2012 when she filed a landmark discrimination lawsuit against Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, a hedge fund, for sexual discrimination in the course of her employment and dismissal from the company. In 2013 we learned that Pao was appointed to the role of interim CEO at Reddit, a position she would use to eliminate salary negotiations out of a belief that women can’t negotiate as well as men, while her discrimination lawsuit against Kleiner Perkins was still ongoing.

Pao lost her case against Kleiner Perkins earlier this year, marking the end of a long discrimination case and the beginning of Reddit and Pao really butting heads. Reddit, a website that once prided itself on free speech to the extent that it defended a subreddit for “creepshots,” now seemed to be deleting threads critical of Pao and her husband, Buddy Fletcher. Fletcher, it turned out, has a history of filing frivolous discrimination lawsuits of his own, and losing them, and is currently being sued under allegations of operating a ponzi scheme. Fletcher owes at least $140 million in court judgements, a number that seems to grow with each passing year.

But for Redditors, posting about Pao’s lawsuit or Fletcher’s troubled legal history meant bans, both outright and shadowban (a shadowban on Reddit is a way to ban people without them knowing. Their post is invisible to everyone else). The fighting has escalated over the past few months as Reddit changed focus from a website that vigorously defended all free speech to one focused on creating a safe space. Numerous subreddits were banned, leading to protests overflowing onto the Reddit main page, leading to more bans, leading to more protests.

Tensions boiled over when AMA curator Victoria Taylor was let go from the company, prompting multiple subreddits to go dark in protest. The protesting against Pao’s leadership has not ceased and, in a rather surprising move, Pao announced that she would be stepping down from her position, remaining on board in an advisory role.

Similar to the sustained attack on gamers following the Gamergate controversy, certain members of the press have immediately gone on the offensive, accusing Pao’s critics of being motivated by racism and misogyny. Gawker’s headline on the story is “Misogynist Tantrum Officially Drives Ellen Pao from Reddit” with

“Ms. Pao’s abrupt downfall in the face of a torrent of sexist and racist comments, many of them on Reddit itself, is quite likely to renew charges that bullying, harassment and cruel behavior are out of control on the web…”
-Mike Isaac, David Streitfeld, NYTimes.com

Nilay Patel, editor in chief at The Verge, took time to call out the “dirtbags” on Reddit for ousting Pao.

“Every dirtbag on Reddit is going to take Pao leaving as validating their dirtbaggery, and it will paralyze a company that needs to change.”

The Guardian is attempting to spin the story as Pao departing due as a victim with the headline “Reddit chief Ellen Pao resigns after receiving ‘sickening’ abuse from users,” while making time to acknowledge the petition for Pao to step down that had gained more than two hundred thousand signatures. Mother Jones, meanwhile, focused on the racist minority of users with the headline “Reddit’s Faction of Racist Trolls Celebrates CEO Ellen Pao’s Resignation.”

Given the history of both Pao and Fletcher making false allegations of discrimination based on sex and ethnicity, the media blitz of articles blaming misogyny and racism for Pao’s resignation, rather than a string of very unpopular actions, isn’t entirely surprising. Ultimately Pao and Fletcher’s histories are readily available for the whole internet to see, regardless of what headline the media decides to go with.

Default Subreddits Going Dark, Protesting Administration

subreddit

Reddit users are revolting, again, in what seems to be a never ending string of controversy around the community-driven website. The latest smoking gun, the removal of a popular Reddit employee. Victoria Taylor is a name many of you have come into contact with, especially if you’ve attended any of Reddit’s celebrity Ask Me Anything events. Taylor was the Director of Talent at Reddit, managing celebrity AMA’s and ensuring the events ran smoothly.

At least she did, until the /r/IAmA subreddit was taken private with the notice that Taylor had been let go from her position with no notice. In response to the sudden change, numerous subreddits have gone dark, including those listed by default on the Reddit homepage. /r/gaming joins the ranks of other default subreddits going dark in protest, including /r/videos, /r/askreddit, /r/movies, /r/science, /r/books, /r/history, /r/art, /r/gadgets, and of course the first group, /r/IAMA.

The messages on each subreddit is virtually the same:

Due to an unexpected Reddit administrative personnel change /r/gaming joins a group of default subreddits going dark temporarily in an effort to resolve the situation. Our apologies for any disruption this may cause.

The list of subreddits continues to grow, with subscriber bases ranging from a few hundred to several million. How long they plan to stay offline is another topic for another day.

John Smedley Talks The Future Of H1Z1

2015-01-16_00028

Daybreak’s John Smedley took to Reddit today to discuss the future of H1Z1, and while the title might have you concerned (given where this has lead in the past), it doesn’t include shutting the game down. The list of upcoming features includes the obvious, fixing bugs and improving AI while also adding in new content. Professions, set to make their way in later this month, will afford players more options to grow their characters.

Our goal remains to have a massive world. We’re doing that with Forgelight 2, which has been in development for quite a while now. We’ll be able to show stuff to you soon, but needless to say we’re super excited by what we’re seeing. It’s truly going to give us the 16,000 square kilometer world we’ve been waiting for. We want the world of H1Z1 to truly be a world. One where you can build your own cities and settlements, or take over one if you can hold it.

Developments also include adding new members to the staff, as well as continuing the fight against cheaters. Smedley claims a 100% detection against most major cheats, adding that auto-banning will speed up the process of ridding these players from the servers. You can read the whole piece at the link below.

Discussing Business Models Now Banned on Wildstar Subreddit

WildStar64 2014-05-08 13-12-45-60

With NCSoft’s latest quarterly report coming up, speculation is rising once again on the possibility of Wildstar either going free to play or buy to play. The Wildstar subreddit, which we should point out is run by fans and not NCSoft, is getting ahead of the game by banning any discussion of f2p/b2p until hard evidence or an official announcement can be procured.

Unless a Carbine Employee, or Moderator here announces any business model changes to WildStar, there is no longer a reason to continue trying to post such discussions, as they are creating a lot of unrest in the community.

NCSoft’s next quarterly release should be coming out this week, hopefully alongside some news on Wildstar’s future. Wildstar’s earnings in the last quarter of 2014 were about $5 million, a sharp 65% drop quarter over quarter.

Sony Caps Fraud Refund At $150, Threatens To Ban Victim

R0QAKVW

Sony is coming under some heavy fire after an account was stolen and used to rack up substantial charges, only to offer to reimburse a small portion of those funds. User Kadjar on Reddit noticed that his account was compromised when multiple purchase confirmations began popping up in his email. Acting quickly to remove on-file credit cards and change passwords, Kadjar contacted Sony support only to be told that his refund would be capped. Out of the $600 in fraudulent charges, they only offered $150 and as PSN currency.

If you read the transcript, ‘Malcom’ seems to indicate that the full amount could be refunded upon completion of the investigation. I called to confirm this, and the supervisor I spoke to informed me that there was a maximum of $150 even after investigation.

Further, the customer service rep Malcolm warns Kadjar that going through the bank to reverse the charges will result in his account being banned irrevocably, with no way to recover any licenses lost. Sony also refused to reactivate his Playstation onto the account until six months, which had been deactivated by the account thief and replaced with another system.

Sony does not currently offer two-factor authentication for its Playstation Network.

FFXIV Patch 2.4 Progress Guide

ffxiv_pub_pach2.4_08

There is a metric ton of content to play through once you hit level 50 in Final Fantasy XIV, and figuring out exactly what you can do might be a daunting task. Thankfully, user Crabcommander on Reddit has compiled a post detailing the content that becomes available at level 50 as well as the prerequisites required to actually participate in said content.

The list is a pretty big read. If you are currently leveling your way up in FFXIV, or have an interest in what the game’s end-game is all about, I suggest you give it a once-over.
