Rockstar Celebrates Record Breaking Holiday Season

It’s no secret that Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2 have been insane successes, and Rockstar is giving something back in return for a popular holiday season. The Diamond Casino Heist set new player numbers in Grand Theft Auto Online that haven’t been seen since the Casino itself released last July. GTA V also enjoyed record engagement on Youtube while Red Dead Online experienced the highest peak numbers in December following the launch of Moonshiners with even higher numbers in January.

To thank their players, Rockstar is giving GTA Online players $2 million in GTA bucks, with Red Dead Online players receiving free access to frontier pursuit roles, role item giveaways, and more.

NM: Grand Theft Auto IV Has Disappeared From PC

Update: A Rockstar Games spokesperson responded to our request for a comment, providing the following statement;

Grand Theft Auto IV was originally created for the Games For Windows Live platform. With Microsoft no longer supporting Games For Windows Live, it is no longer possible to generate the additional keys needed to continue selling the current version of the game. We are looking at other options for distributing GTAIV for PC and will share more information as soon as we can.

Rockstar Games has pulled Grand Theft Auto IV from sale on Steam and the Rockstar Launcher for…reasons that are not entirely clear as nobody involved has made a statement. It is Friday afternoon after all. The game was delisted for sale mid-afternoon on Friday January 10 (today for those reading this as it comes out) although the two expansion collection is still available for sale as is Grand Theft Auto IV via the Playstation store and Xbox.

On Steam the page for Grand Theft Auto IV still exists but the ability to add it to your cart has been disabled. It is not accompanied by any notice from Valve that the publisher requested removal. The Rockstar website still lists Grand Theft Auto IV but any links to buy the game digitally on PC are broken and simply redirect to the front page.

MMO Fallout has reached out to Rockstar’s PR folks and will update if they haven’t gone home for the weekend.

Surprise! Grand Theft Auto V Hits Xbox Game Pass

Bet you didn’t see this coming.

Xbox Game Pass has been shaking up the news lately with the wide array of big name titles being added to the subscription service and today is no different. Microsoft announced via Twitter that Grand Theft Auto V is not only the latest title to be added, but that it is available now. Right now.

Well okay, not right now right now but sometime today. By the time half of you read this, GTA V will be ready for download on your system. Granted if you look at Rockstar’s sales numbers 90% of the world already owns Grand Theft Auto V, but the other 10% (or the portion that subscribes to Game Pass) will be happy to know they won’t have to shell out any extra to go online and host a big casino heist.

In Plain English: Lohan Loses GTA Lawsuit Appeal

Lindsay Lohan has lost her appeal in New York State Court today in a privacy lawsuit against Take Two.

Lohan sued Take Two Interactive in regards to allegations that the company illegally used her likeness in Grand Theft Auto V. In the game, players assist a celebrity by the name of Lacey Jonas escape the paparazzi. Lohan’s lawyers argued that the Jonas character was a likeness of Lohan’s image and personality and thus constituted an invasion of privacy.

The appeals court ruled that the image of Lacey Jonas constituted an “indistinct, satirical representations of the style, look, and persona of a modern, beach-going young woman” and thus were not recognizable as Lohan. In the ruling, it was also noted that a character in a video game would fall under the laws governing using the likeness of a living person for purposes of selling a product, however the character used in Grand Theft Auto V was not close enough to Lohan to constitute a likeness of her.

“Here, the Jonas character simply is not recognizable as plaintiff inasmuch as it merely is a generic artistic depiction of a “twenty something” woman without any particular identifying physical characteristics. The analysis with respect to the Beach Weather and Stop and Frisk illustrations is the same.”

The court did not address the advertising and trade elements of Lohan’s appeal. The court also struck down the appeal of Karen Gravano against Take Two, a similar case to Lohan’s, citing similarly that the game did not appropriate her likeness when creating the character Andrea Bottino.

Lost GTA Online Characters Are Gone For Good

actual_1380327130

Last week saw a patch roll out for Grand Theft Auto Online to fix a rather nasty bug resulting in characters not being displayed. When the bug first popped up, Rockstar acted quickly and warned users not to create new characters in the missing slots. In a followup comment posted just a few days ago, Rockstar Games has revealed that the characters lost due to the bug can not be recovered.

For those asking about their lost characters or rank, those will not be able to be restored so we sincerely hope that this cash stimulus we’re giving out this month will help you get back on your feet or to make your new life in Los Santos & Blaine extra sweet.

To compensate players for launch issues, lost characters, and lost vehicles, Rockstar is giving half a million dollars to anyone who plays GTA Online in October. The money will be doled out in two halves, with the first dropping this week and the second by the end of the month.

False Alarm: GTA Online Is GTA V Online

xl_GTA-5-Lifestyle-624

It’s a knee jerk reaction to assume that whenever a company places the word Online in their title, that the game will be an MMO. Grand Theft Auto Online, announced previously this week, hasn’t turned out to be the MMO that we thought it would be, but the real answer isn’t any less disappointing. Set to be launched October 1st, GTA Online moves forward from the multiplayer mode available in GTA IV, allowing up to sixteen players per server to run around and pretty much do as they please.

What sets GTA Online apart from GTA IV’s online mode is the emphasis on user generated content. Using an in-game editor, players will be able to put together races, deathmatch maps, missions, and more. As players play the online mode, they will obtain money and be able to progress through a separate story mode, meeting new faces and taking on missions that can be completed cooperatively. Rockstar Games has noted that while GTA Online will be very similar to GTA V when it launches in October, over time the title will be updated with new locations, new gameplay mechanics, and new features to set it apart from the single player story.

As far as pricing goes, we have nothing to go off of other than a comment that GTA Online will be free for those who buy GTA V. How the game will handle microtransactions will have to be seen.
