Trion Worlds Denies Security Breach

archeage

If you’ve been following ArcheAge discussion, you’re likely aware of a surge in player claims that their accounts were being subjected to unauthorized attempts to purchase the ArcheAge founders pack. Community Manager Scapes has responded to the allegations by stating that Trion Worlds has not been breached and the purchase attempts are a symptom of the same old account theft that goes on every day.

What happened in the last few hours is sadly nothing new: Every day, bots obtain user credentials from various unprotected sites around the Internet, build lists of login and passwords, and try them on Trion’s servers (along with many other sites). If players consistently use simple or repeated passwords across different online services, these bots may get access to their accounts. Because of the current momentum around ArcheAge, hundreds of millions of such attempts were made from well over a million different IP addresses in the last few weeks, only a fraction of which ended up being successful today.

All players affected by fraudulent charges will be refunded by Trion Worlds, and the Glyph client is being boosted with additional security features.

Next ArcheAge Test Coming August 22nd

AA_Beta4_EN_952x414

ArcheAge beta tests are like the McRib, they only come around for a little while and the next event is always sooner than you think. Whether you’re itching to get in for the first time or have already tested ArcheAge and are hungry for more (or have to wait out your prison sentence), you’ll be glad to hear that the next closed beta event begins August 22nd and goes through August 27th. Your crops will pick up exactly where they left off at the end of the previous event.

What’s new? Now you can play ArcheAge in English, German, and even French. Beta Event 3 keys will not be valid this time around, but you’ll be able to grab a key from a number of partner sites (not MMO Fallout, we’re not a partner site) in the coming days. Otherwise you can buy into the ArcheAge founders packs and get instant access.

Why Does ArcheAge Have Sixteen Thousand Spammers?

2013-12-17_00007

ArcheAge is currently in alpha stage getting ready for its launch under Trion Worlds. Players are in-game thanks to a $150 package, where they are bug testing, balance testing, and apparently gold farming and spamming in massive quantities. How massive? Trion Worlds banned sixteen thousand accounts for spamming chat and botting gold. In an alpha.

We’re pleased to report that over 16,000 nasty, evil, foul, and most importantly misbehaving accounts have been reactively and proactively removed from Alpha. These accounts were purchased using ill-gotten funds and have been used to farm gold with bots and to spam chat channels, neither of which is allowed in ArcheAge.

Patch 1.2 arrives next week and gives Trion more power to rid the game of evil spammers and farmers.

MMOments: Defiance DLC #5

2014-05-06_00004

Arktech Revolution is the fifth and final DLC installment for Defiance’s first season pass, and one that I welcome with open arms. It’s been a month since this DLC launched and a few people speculated that the sudden lack of a review here at MMO Fallout was me signaling that I was done with the game after my previous reviews. This is not the case. As it stands, Arktech Revolution is more about quality of life improvements over all else, I wanted to be completely sure that I took enough time to fully digest what had changed to understand how it affects day to day gameplay.

First off, let me thank Trion Worlds for fixing what I consider to be the most poorly executed update in Defiance’s short history. Several DLC’s ago, Trion introduced stims and spikes, as well as consumable grenades to Defiance. The concept was great, you had stims that boosted power/defense/healing as well as spikes that granted an area of effect boost that restored ammo, increased damage, etc. The implementation left a lot to be desired, as replenishing your stockpile of stims/spikes was entirely dependent on either going to a merchant or hoping that the correct type was dropped. With Arktech Revolution, enemies drop generic refills for stims, spikes, and grenades that make it much harder to run out in the middle of an invasion.

It is also possible to gain experience on weapons that have already been mastered. This sounds like a small update, but it means a lot when you previously would have to decide in the middle of a battle whether to switch to a new weapon or continue on at the cost of not making any progress. The armor nodes are interesting, but I haven’t noticed much of an effect on the overall experience.

2014-05-07_00009

The boost to both the EGO level cap and enemy abilities has made the game very difficult for new players and veterans alike. Where the game was often times far too easy before, has now become difficult to the point of impossible in certain settings. For instance, I took part in a Volge invasion that rather quickly capped out at the highest difficulty and began spawning top-tier Volge mobs. Many of us couldn’t even make a dent in their armor, which isn’t so much difficult as it is frustrating when you have ten of them spawning in the same area.

Looking back, Defiance is an infinitely better game than it was when it launched one year ago. Ignoring the fact that the game can be purchased for pennies on the dollar nowadays, Defiance is set to go free to play next month on PC with the console versions to follow. The game still has many more improvements to make, like how the world feels so cramped with all of the events going on at any given time. According to forum posts, Trion plans on increasing the size of the game world following the introduction of free to play.

Overall, though, if you were to bottle up all of the paid features from the first five DLC packages and put them up for $30, would it be worth it? I’d like to say so. With the second season of Defiance coming this summer and more tie-in missions on their way, I’m looking forward to what Defiance has to offer for the future.

Defiance Switching To Free To Play

DLC5Unveil_Blog

Trion Worlds has announced that Defiance is shedding its box price and going completely free to play later this year. The PC version is set to make the switch on June 4th, with the PS3 version following on July 15th, and the Xbox360 changeover to come at a later date. New players will have access to the Bay area, including original endgame content and future missions for free. Players who pick up a copy of the game will receive a number of perks, including inventory space, ark keycodes, character slots, and more. Existing owners will also have these same perks.

More on this announcement in the coming weeks.

ArcheAge Criminal Sentenced To 13 Hours Prison

67e02208-cc0e-40e6-bde6-bb739668226f

Criminals beware, you’re in for a fair…trial. ArcheAge has one of the most interesting crime systems that I have ever seen. It is far too complicated to explain in this article, but the gist of the system is that crimes leave behind evidence that can be found by other players, and if you die as a criminal you are sent to a court and sentenced by a jury of five players. As one gamer found out in the alpha test, that sentence can be rather harsh. Especially if you’ve racked up over one hundred charges. As you can see from the screenshot above, the player was sentenced to 770 minutes in prison, or just under thirteen hours.

Prisoners in ArcheAge can either wait through their sentence or try to break out.
