SOE Devs Read Calm, Intelligent Tweets

Given that the internet is well known as a place of social interaction, it stands to reason that only the sociable of us would make use of its services. Sony Online Entertainment has celebrated this by posting a video where developers read calm, intelligent, well thought out tweets by players with a firm grasp of the English language. Enjoy.

Derek Smart Explains Line of Defense EA Fees

LOD_3

3000AD recently revealed that Line of Defense is set to launch under Steam’s early access program at the rather hefty sum of $99 for the package. Derek Smart took to Twitter to explain the pricing as an insurance policy that only those interested in bug testing join, and that “freeloaders” are weeded out.

We’re a SMALL independent game dev making a MASSIVE game in a genre dominated and monopolized by SOE and their popular @planetside2 series. In contrast, from start to finish, LOD was developed by less than ten people. Including third-party contractors. Yeah. And unlike those other guys, we don’t take your money, then plonk you in useless assets (how do you like that hanger now?), a largely unfinished product or a product that may not even see the light of day. I don’t even need to defend against that premise; go look at my game releases. While they may not be everyone’s cup of tea, we still keep making them because we have and know our audience.

Smart also announced that Line of Defense will be adding in playable female characters.

DC Universe F2P Fun Facts, And Vanguard Free To Play?

If tweets carried a physical representation, the updates by John Smedley today would look not unlike grasping critics by the hair and smearing their faces in Sony’s statistics. Earlier today, Smedley tweeted a few of DC Universe’s accomplishments since its move to free to play:

  • Over 100% pre-f2p concurrent users.
  • 6% growth daily.
  • 700% increase in revenue (47% PC / 53% PS3)
  • Over 85% of daily logins are returning players.

Additionally, a user by the name of mupchu777 tweeted to John Smedley: “how about making vanguard saga of Heroes ftp… If not just kill the game already.” Mr. Smedley tweeted a response, “stay tuned.”

Cryptic.

Well Played, Sir. Clever Spam?

If Funcom's money was gold-backed...
I wish I had a farm.

It’s always good to have some form of anti-spam protection on your blog/website especially if, like me, you find yourself being taken into flattery, however genuine, a little too easily. For example, if it weren’t for the intercession of Akismet, I likely would not have looked past:

Hey great website, you really know your stuff. Definitely adding this to my blog tracker!

to:

buy wow gold aion kinah cheap prices fast delivery jklfdkjsklfjsldfjklakfjl;kjqiouerpoijl;cvkn

Since MMO Fallout’s inception last year, we’ve blocked hundreds upon hundreds of gold farmer spam messages, and multiple phishing attempts. My point is that every time they are becoming much more clever in their attempts to look human. For instance:

Today Akismet flagged a twitter trackback. I always trackback trackbacks, as they appear on MMO Fallout, to ensure that the website is genuine. After going through a Twitter account, a Digg-esque website, yet another website, and finally coming upon a blog, I found an ad-supported WordPress blog, where the typing looked something like this:

Fallen Earth announced this week that wow gold would be leaving the company to wow gold

And so on. Keep vigilante, MMOers! Just wait until gold farmers start making their own video games. This unsolicited testimonial for Akismet spam protection is brought to you wow gold.
